Toby Alderweireld

So what are the indicators pointing to him staying?

What are the indicators pointing to him leaving?

When you break it down, there really arent any - unless you are a bit of a drama queen and see conspiracy where there is none.

As @galeforce points out - there are perfectly valid reasons for him not playing, so if "not playing" is all youve got to go on to support a belief he is leaving you might want to take a step back and have a look...

International games are far different to Premier league games in terms of intensity. Neither Sanchez or Vertonghen can be dropped and we have Dier on the field ready to move in to a CB position with midfield options on the bench. I dont see who deserved to be dropped out of the squad considering he is probably not Poch fit after being out so long.

So for me its a nothing story still. This is the flexibility we have with Dier in midfield.

he needs to earn his place back if he even wants to stay.

you were probably saying the same last year with Walker...... sometimes all the talk/rumours and actions of the manager are pointers to something really happening behind the scenes

It’s not just about him not playing.

All other crucial first team players who have wanted to stay haven’t let it get to this stage of contract before signing new deal

His overly pro Spurs Instagram campaign

A poster on here having a good source that he’s off

His personal situation, being one of Europe’s best defenders and having one big pay cheque left in him

Other than that, no reason at all....

Were clubs like PSG in for him offering mega bucks?

All hypothetical in the first place anyway, of course.

Carrasco is one of the best young wide men in Europe, only 24, he had no reason to leave top level european football at this stage of his career. If he wanted he could have forced through a move to a top club. He was at one in A Madrid, and chose to leave for China

Walker was actively benched, the writing was on the wall for some time.

This doesnt seem the same to me at all.

Alderweireld has been injured, badly, for some time. When he has played, he has looked really poor. That he isnt in the team right now seems like a legitimate part of running a club at this level.

All of which points to contract negotiation, not "Im out of here".

In fact, the "overly pro Spurs Instagram campaign" would suggest exactly that. Were he going round liking other clubs posts etc and actively flirting around - maybe you'd have a point.

As it is, theres nothing to suggest he isnt committed to the club.

So no mention of big money moves within europe then? So not comparable then...

I admire your optimism and look forward to seeing that classic Poch pose next to Toby...

Its not optimism, its just not unqualified pessimism either.

Though as you mention Poch and his favourite pose - how many times have people been all down in the dumps with the certainty of a player leaving, only to have one of those images follow shortly after?

It has happened time and again.

These days I look for something more tangible before thinking a player is off.

.

he has been injured, badly as you say, but it was the same last season with that bad looking knee injury and he was quickly integrated back into the side when given the all clear to resume training

but forget all that. what you seem to be ignoring is his contract situation which puts the club in a difficult position. If Toby doesnt renew his contract then summer 2019 he can walk out to wherever he likes for 25 mill. If the club feels he is not worth the salary he is demanding then this summer they have to maximise his transfer potential and get as much as possible for him.

so right now just like with Walker it does appear Toby is being purposely left out. He is fit, he could have played more but hasnt, it does seem he is no longer part of Poch's long term plans.

I’ll be honest, I don’t recall thinking Kane, Dele, Vertonghen, Dembele, were off just before they signed a new contract don’t know who you’re referring to? There’s never any factual indicators that a player is going to leave bar the manager or player himself saying so. That’s obviously not going to happen so you can only look at the clues. There is zero to imply he’s going to stay, plenty to suggest he will go. If you want to be dismissive of those things or make out like they’re just negotiating tools - heard the exact same thing with Walker. Facts are the very thing Spurs fans get wound up about where people mention us not paying top wages is true no more so than for players approaching their last big contract. No conincidence that it happened to Walker being at that stage at around the age of 28 and same looks likely with Toby....

We have Sanchez, playing well, we dont need to rush Toby in. We can wait until he is actually, fully, ready. And given his few games since getting back to "fitness" it seems valid to me he isnt back in the team yet.

Poch didnt hesitate to give him a game, he looked miles off the pace, he hasnt been back in yet. Is that Poch actively benching him because he is leaving? Or the same as Poch treats EVERY player? Right now Ill go with the latter.

Im not ignoring his contract situation at all. He is in negotiations, nothing is being publicised on it, its taking some time, and so people are filling in the blanks by assuming the worst - so basically the same as pretty well every new contract signed the last couple of years.
