Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

so even Gullit can see we have been playing defensive football under AVB....and he aint no deluded spurs fan

"fear to lose".... exactly

Gullit, the arch proponent of sexy football.

If we were playing defensive, we wouldn't be playing a high line and looking to play most of the game in the opponents half. We would be sitting back, soaking up pressure and kicking it long whenever we got the ball back.

What we were playing is controlled football. It isn't champagne attacking but it isn't defensive either.

I don't think this is true.

I think we played like an attacking side without the ball (push up, squeeze space, try and win it back higher up the field if possible) and a conservative team with the ball (no "risky" passes, keep it for the sake of keeping it and ultimately, therefore, no creativity in our play). In the end, we were neither one thing or the other, as we started shipping goals but still struggled to score. It turned into a bit of a mess.

Exactly, it was control rather than attacking or defensive.

Sunderland are trying to implement a similar thing: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-gives-backing-Black-Cats-boss-Gus-Poyet.html

But as Sunderland adapt to Poyet’s passing style, Borini has called on fans to have patience, in the hope performances improve.

He said: 'The fans need to understand how we play football. Sometimes they’re pushing us forward when we don’t need to go forward. They need to stay with us.

'We’re not playing English football, just kicking forward, we’re trying to build something and trying to do something.

'We’re trying to build something. It’s not something we’ve seen a lot of here but that’s the way we’re trying to play.

'When we’re under pressure we need to be ourselves, especially in front of our fans. We need to play our game not the game other people want.

I think you'll be in a minority then. Most people will agree - even if they didn't like it - that our high line squeezed the game in the opponents half.

It squeezed the game to the half way line. That's where the majority of our possession was imo.

True. Though it was predominantly in the first five or ten yards of their half, around the centre circle.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Well thumbs up for horses for courses, so far. Sherwood, Ferdinand, Ramsey and Freund nowhere as daft as suggested!

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

What does "control" mean? Today was refreshing to see, a home team looking to beat the opposition. We only did this once this season at whl vs Manu.

Control? What's the point if you cannot score and your bore the pants off everyone?

Today was controlling the game in the second half. We also controlled the game plenty of other times this season.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Hopefully with a few more positive peformances like today we will at least get to the stage where some will start giving the guy a fair ride and evaluate him in an unbiased way.

I for one am really interested to see what happens when he can get a sustained amount of time on the training pitch and get some of our stellar names back from injury.....I think its important not to keep comparing him to AVB though I do think its telling that in 2 out of our 3 epl games under him the team has managed to score three goals...a feat that AVB did not manage in 16 epl games this season.

But yes in a strange way this appointment from within might actually work for this club though of course I know its folly to get too carried away over a result against a poor Stoke City side. I am very curious to see how he sets up vs man utd....I wonder whether there will be some sort of internal struggle....should he stick with a wonky 4-4-2 or should he go a little more defensive at Old Trafford?? My own personal preference is that I hope he goes for it.....If we could somehow eek out a win at Old Trafford it could really boost us going into the second half of the season.

I suppose he will be judged on whether he can get Soldado firing and get our other signings firing too....add to that we have City, Everton, Arsenal home & Liverpool, Saudi Sportswashing Machine & Chelsea away. I believe 4th is achievable and there is no reason why we cant have a go in the europa league,,,,especially if we find it tough to navigate a difficult third round of the fa cup.

I think one thing the result today can do is give us a little optimism for the new year....We are still in a fight for honours and I see no reason why we cant have a strong second half of the season...our season is not over as some have said it is....I really hope we can get behind the team and put the whole AVB saga behind us.

Good Luck Tim....I for one hope you can bring us a bit of happiness in the new year......

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

We controlled the whole game today and that was painfully obvious.

yep a two goal difference and controlling possesion is my idea of controlling a game......as I said in omt Norwich at home is the only other time we have been in control of a football match this season.

Hanging on to a one goal lead is not controlling a game no matter what the possesion statistics are.

You know what will happen though? We get beat against Manure at OT on Wednesday and it'll be like 'I told you so'. Its going to be a difficult game but hopefully we go there and give as good as we get. I think we will get beat but Manure are in top form and we are just coming out of a difficult slump.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I hope he plays the same side at Old Trafford except for Walker in at RB and Rose in at LB. We should have a go -- and frankly, we need to win some of these tough away games to make up for points we've dropped at home so far this season.

Well Sherwood Haters are gonna hate........

I think its conceivable for us to get a result there.....it really could be a massive tipping point this season....I dont think we need to go there with any fear...... yep I know if we lose the hate wagon will gather momentum again......I did say I can only hope that he starts getting judged minus the pre-conceived views on him that some have.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

We controlled the whole game today and that was painfully obvious.

We gave the ball away quite a bit in the first half, but that wasn't really a problem given the opposition.

My real concern was no shots on target for the whole first half. Given the opposition and how open they were that's a problem.

2nd half was very good though.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I don't have any faith that Sherwood is going to be successful however I also think he's on a hiding to nothing. By that I mean that I think we only have a small chance of getting top 4 this season (given that Man C and cheatski are nailed on to get 2 of the places with **** looking good for a third spot) and, with Van Gaal waiting in the wings, the only way he saves his job is to finish 4th, or perhaps a valliant failure and finishing 5th

Realistically I see us finishing somewhere between 5th and 7th, more likely 6th or 7th, and perhaps 8-10 points off 4th. That wont save Sherwood's job. I just hope Levy makes the chance asap once the season finishes so that LVG joins as soon as the World Cup is over
