Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I know a lot of people are either distraught that AVB is gone/ that Sherwood has been hired/ both but surely you have to acknowledge that, regardless of whether his actual tactics are complete ********, we have not lined up in the classic 4-4-2 under Sherwood?

Against West Ham:

------------ Lloris
Walker Capoue Chiriches Rose
Lennon Dembele Sigurdsson Townsend
-------- Ade Defoe

I'd say that's as close as you can get to a classic 4-4-2 and it's really just Townsend being injured that has prevented us from seeing more of that.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

genuine question, but how do you tell what formation is being played? Players are always on the move, and continually changing, now in very compressed areas of the pitch.
Even at kick off it's hard, due to the centre circle creating the arcs in each half!

You can't a 4-4-2 9 times out of 10 turns into a diamond formation, the same as a 4-2-3-1 is practically a 4-3-3 this is why when you see formations before a match or on match of the day they are usually different.

Maybe that's why I struggle lol.
Because to my knowledge, in a 4-3-3, 3 of the mids are unlikely to be in a straight line, eg 1 DM + 2 CM or other variants. Which then means you could add in an extra layer,e ie 4-1-2-3, as in the example I used.
I like 9-1, it's easy to understand!

Best bet is to look at the team when the opposition keeper is taking a goal kick or whenever we move back to a defensive position, they'll usually revert to their "starting" positions. Over 90 minutes though you should generally just have a feel for where the players were.

arsenal play 4231 which is 2 TWO IN MIDFIELD!!!!! the 3 behind the 1 are attackers not midfielders. so in this game it was 2 vs 2. clearly you don't get it.

Really? I always thought it was this.

cheers Rossi - I also need to convince my mate who gets the tickets to pay extra for the upper tier sections when I make a game or two (apologies if straying from the topic, but it's sort of related)

Lewis Holtby excepted.

They generally have a set position they are supposed to take up when they are defending.

They generally have a set position they are supposed to take up when they are defending.

In other words, it's all ******** then!
Because even when defending, it may be 3 seconds before they win the ball back, and then they're back in possession.
Or Kyle Walker has pushed up down the right, loses the ball at the byline, then what. Even with players covering, I still don't get it.
I understand that it's a basic framework, but in that case, how come there are so so many variations, and even layers, iesub - dividing the Midfield.
No wonder Rubber face just told em to run around a bit!

no. ozil is much further up the field with walcott and whoever else on the left. leaving just the 2 mids. so the city example isnt relevant and it was yaya toure and fernandinho vs 2 arsenal CM's and there was only going to be one winner.

Tottenham still eyeing Louis Van Gaal as manager despite giving Tim Sherwood the job

Chairman Daniel Levy said to have been highly impressed by Holland boss during almost six hours of talks but will have to wait until after the World Cup

Tottenham's talks with Louis van Gaal will continue in the New Year.

The Holland boss is set to meet Spurs chairman Daniel Levy again in January. The duo had talks last Sunday, within hours of Sunday Mirror Sport exclusively revealing that the 62-year-old Holland coach was on the White Hart Lane wanted list.

Levy flew by private jet to Holland last Sunday morning and was taken by car to Van Gaal’s exclusive penthouse *apartment in the Dutch seaside resort of Noordwijk.

They spent almost six hours in talks, and watched the North Londoners' victory at Southampton on television, before Levy headed home.

Van Gaal insisted he could not job-share the Spurs job with his role as Holland’s head coach. And the following day Levy gave the Tottenham manager’s job to Tim Sherwood on an 18-month deal.

But informed sources in Holland insist Levy was highly impressed with Van Gaal and that the interest in him joining Spurs after the World Cup finals remains intact.

Van Gaal presented Levy with a detailed dossier of his blueprint for the White Hart Lane club's future. He based it along the lines of the impressive work he did at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

In Holland, football insiders are convinced Van Gaal will join Spurs.

Ruud Gullit, the former Chelsea boss, said: “I am really curious how Van Gaal will do when he arrives. It makes me want to follow everything he is going to do and change.

“Van Gaal has his own style. He is so strong and so dominant. But of all the clubs in the Premier League, Tottenham will suit him better than any other.

Why? Because Tottenham has always been a footballing side. They have gone back to defensive football and playing with a kind of fear to lose.’’

Gullit added: “The great thing about Van Gaal is that he will not want new players. He thinks there is enough quality there. Spurs have a good squad.

“‘You can do more with that squad’, is his motto. Right now they won’t be able to bridge the gap on the League leaders. They have to start playing in a different style if they want to achieve things.”

During his career Van Gaal has been a winner and will not be intimidated by taking on Wenger, Pellegrini or Mourinho.

dingdong Advocaat, the former Holland boss, said: “Tottenham is a fantastic club who are very wealthy and he can achieve what he has done elsewhere. Van Gaal is a guy who will add something in the Premier League.’’

Gullit understands why many English fans want their club to appoint an English manager.

“They want to go back to English coaches,” he said. “So in that way I would love a guy like Sherwood to do well. But right now he could still do with the presence of Van Gaal.’’

Interesting what Gullit says here about us.

Interesting what Gullit says here about us.

not sure how true this is? doubt gullit etc would be so open about it. unless they were mis quoted and just giving their opinions in theory

not that van gaal isnt a good manager but i would much prefer de boer who seemingly is a younger more open minded version. van gaal is known to be very difficult man set in his ways (remind you of anyone?) hence falling out with some big players in the past. he admitted he quite the dutch job the first time because players rejected his methods. having said that we dont have big names, there all young and will probably learn a lot and follow his orders. except ade off course

But AVB achieved our highest league points ever, playing "defensive" football. So, he was not entirely wrong to do that. I am convinced we would have done much better this season if Levy had not destroyed the team balance by selling Bale.

As for Sherwood, have to wonder if all the players are responding to him. Apparently, Sherwood was shouting bad words at the players after only 5-10mins against WBA. And he didn't even stay back to receive the players after the match. Franly, Sherwood's body language doesn't show the confidence of a manager.
