Tim Sherwood: New Spurs boss says knowledge of club is key

Tim Sherwood says he hopes his in-depth knowledge of Tottenham will make him a success as the club's new manager.

"I've known it from the grassroots right up to the first team, worked at every level of the football club and played here, so I know it better than most," said the 44-year-old.

"Hopefully that will stand me in good stead taking this club forward."

The former Spurs midfielder was given the job on a 18-month contract after the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Sherwood said it was a "proud moment" to be named manager, adding: "If you cut me in half, I bleed the colour of the club."

I know my car inside out. I've worked on it when required, I've driven it for a long time, cleaned it myself, etc.

I wouldn't for a second believe that I could drive it better than an experienced racing driver.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

Some questions to those who have watched the last two games closely:

1) Are the players passing and moving better with Tim as manager? AVB's team were often criticised for static movement leading to fewer passsing options for those in possession of the ball

2) Do we look more likely to be effective from corners?

3) Do we look better at defending corners or set-pieces (or just the same)?

4) Are we creating more clear-cut chances, and hence missing more sitters?

5) Are we pressing more (or less) than before?

No, but that's been the case for at least a decade - it will take a lot of work to change.

2) Do we look more likely to be effective from corners?

Not really, but I still believe it's a personnel issue. Most teams have a defender and a forward who are really good at attacking corners - we only have Kaboul. Chadli might help.

3) Do we look better at defending corners or set-pieces (or just the same)?

Not against West Ham, SCIC didn't really test in that way.

4) Are we creating more clear-cut chances, and hence missing more sitters?

Not really. Lumped a lot of pointless crosses in at West Ham. Looked good on the break against SCIC but they gave us loads of space in behind.

5) Are we pressing more (or less) than before?

Less, but the signs of clever pressing are there. In the last match we were heavy pressing and then easing off - looked good but we just couldn't keep the ball.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I don't know what to make of this really, I wanted a big name and someone with previous but we've gone for that before and it's not worked at all.

Personally I think it's ridiculous not to go for someone proven.

BUT for some reason I get a very strange feeling that this is the way to go, step outside our comfort zone (which in reality hasn't been all that comfortable) take some pressure off and give someone new a go.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

I'm sorry i cannot let that one pass- that is PURE BULL****

How can a charlatan get our RECORD PL Points haul, and unluckily miss out on CL by a point, having worked with a squad shorn of two of it's best playmakers in Modric and VDV?
Criticise all you like for this season, when AVB didn't get to reach the 'heights' of the previous season (I think he was fired too early), but please don't talk crap about last year being a total fluke orchestrated by a 'charlatan'.

In fact, you could argue that Sherwood is MORE of a charlatan!

It was called Gareth Bale, he earned avb a lot of points. This record points score is getting boring, points are relative - it meant **** all in the end

He didn't earn 'Arry all those points. Nor did he AVB in the first half of last season.

Credit for those points goes to AVB and Bale.

And are all facts boring, or just the ones that are inconvenient to you?

Whatever; it's proof as I said before that AVB may have ultimately not got us top 4, but he was NOT a charlatan!

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

The 'Bale got us record points!' argument is more boring. As if he was ridiculous for the whole season (he only hit the heights he did for the second half) and as if clean sheets and solidarity as a team all come through sheer luck too. There's a reason he was able to hit the winner for us and it's because he was given the solid platform to be able to do it.

Hate to bring up another defence of AVB because I would be very happy to move on but as long as people come out with rubbish like him being a charlatan, or that he had nothing to do with our good stuff last season, or any other nonsense that's just way off base and does him a disservice, it deserves to be picked up upon.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

to be accepted IMO he needs to get a large turd tattooed over his Arsenal tattoo, that or begin removal laser treatment.

Re: Tim Sherwood - Head Coach

To anyone citing Sherwood's age and lack of managerial experience it's worth remembering that in Nov 1958 the Spurs board appointed the 39 year old with no previous managerial experience other than having worked with the clubs youth and reserve teams.

Had Gg and internet forums, and parasites in the media like Ashton been about then I wonder whether we would have seen things like:

My mate works at training ground and says that Nicholson has been undermining Jimmy Anderson and turning players against him for last 6 months.

Also interesting to know that, as Sherwood is, Venables was also 44 years old when taking over at Spurs in 1987 and so was Fergie when arriving at Old Trafford in 1986.

best reasons I've seen in support of Tim's appointment so far :)

Did you not read the part where he said "HOPEFULLY"?

Wow, nice attempt at being objective ....

Soldado had more clear cut chances in one game against Southampton than he had in the previous 16.

But you don't need to be an experienced racing driver to drive your car well. In fact an experienced racing driver may be exactly what you don't need if you want to avoid a crash. Whoa I'm posting on Christmas day -this is becoming obsessive.

I could counter those by saying he didn't need to earn the points because there were others in the team who could also do that. But he was still pretty damn good remember Inter Milan away and at home? AVB did not invent the brilliance of Bale. In fact imo Bale became better because he had to because no one else around him was going to pick up the baton. He says so interviews about "making Spurs tick" But hey this is he Sherwood thread.
