The transfer thread

We tried to sign him in summer 2022, but he turned us down in favour of first team football at Palace.

I think he'd be a decent signing on a 2-3 year deal, while we wait for Keeley and Gunter to develop

He cannot play with his feet either!!!!!!

As my friend just said, we're shopping at Poundland thanks to HG issues. And why haven't we had something lined up for weeks? Vic was hurt in Nov!!!!!

Im starting to think we should just recall all of Keeley, Philips, Donely, Devine and Veliz, and blood the future through the second half of this season. Forge a young team for the next 7-8 years out of this adversity.

We probably have been looking around for weeks but the ones we fancy are first choice/not for sale etc. I doubt there are many clubs that would be happy to lose a top keeper halfway through the season. January is such an annoying window nowadays.. clubs don't seem to be able to just slap down money and steal the best players from down the food chain like they used to back in the day. Also PSR has thrown a spanner in the works for a lot of clubs too, If there were no financial restrictions I'm sure Chelsea, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Villa would all be having a field day right now!

I suppose we are shopping for players that other clubs can let go mid-season e.g.
Only 6 months left on contract, so at least they get some dosh.
OR they are a small team in mid table, not gonna win the league, not gonna get relegated, so they can afford to let their star man come to Spurs
OR they are a REALLY big team with expendable yet good players (Deki, Bentancur)
OR they need to offload players for PSR reasons (Barca, Cheatski, Newcash or whatever)

I don't think GK is a priority at all in this window. Vic is back in training soon. Another 3-4 weeks and he's back.
We will be in the relegation zone by then. Imagine he gets injured when he comes back.

I always find the GK conversation a hard one. I don't actually know the answer.

Firstly, I read above that we should sign a new keeper to give Keeley and Gunter 2-3 years to be ready. Do you know how mad that sounds to me? Why exactly would these 2 guys stick around for that long whilst we prat around with other keepers. Keeley's next step is to be playing in our cup games and EL, if we make it. Gunter's is probably going to follow Keeley's path and get a loan.

Secondly, why would a keeper in their prime years join us just to solve our second choice keeper problems? Why would they be prepared to sit on our bench just in case we need them? That type of keeper joins because they back themselves to be first choice, and they've been given some type of indication.

Thirdly, why would we sign a keeper that doesn't suit our tactical system? If there is a requirement to be able to play with your feet, then that massively narrows down the search. I think Steff was mentioning earlier that Venom was a choice supported by the data. That suggests to me that the next keeper we buy or loan will be the same.

I think we'll end up with the following
1) An older keeper (purchase or loan)
2) A salary that provides some comfort for not being in the first team.
3) A few t-shirts with trophies on them

In other words a slightly modified version of Forster.

Not really, I think it's absolutely right that if we took that approach they get match time. The big detail is that I am not sure Veliz, ect, are ready. Or ever will be!
Agreed. And we're already integrating quite a few younger players. I think it's good to have a balance between youth and experience when integrating and developing younger players. Some of them may benefit more from being out on loan too.

I am not sure Forster is the issue, he has been fine.
Agreed. We do need a new no.2 for the long term, but don't think a January window is the time to visit that (unless an obvious candidate becomes available out of nowhere). I thought Foster would be a lot more dodgy than he has been, other than the Man U game he has been fine and if he was going to mess things up at least was in a game we was 3-0 up in. I don't think quality wise we would get a much better no.2 who just sits on the bench and plays some cup games, I guess someone younger who is better with the ball at his feet is what we will be looking for but it's hardly a priority....

Fully agreed.

While I do think we need reinforcements this window the clear and obvious priority should be getting in players that make good sense medium to long term that can also do a good job short term. I would rather see that happen even if it takes time rather than getting someone in quickly.

We have more pressing issues than our backup goalkeeper.

And that's exactly why we should stay to fudge away .. he thinks "better things" are in line for him. Guy bring his own fudging circus as another negative.

I'm all for bringing in experience this window, but not rehab projects
Don't want him but don't see what the problem is with him turning down a move to Saudi. Can still do a job for a European club. Plenty of time to head off to Saudi later in his career if he wants a big pay day.
