The transfer thread

They work as a team. And have drills and games that are integrated to work the whole.

We haven't been good in defence, midfield and attack (given the resources we pour up front) , have too many injuries, youngsters are filling gaps instead of playing to their strengths. I don't think we look attractive as a project at all
You said “My main concern will be the bunch of coaches who I have to Google about to find out who they are” so you are shifting the goalposts. No club has a raft of well known coaches.
Please stop picking at this wound, let it scab over; you go on and on about this.

Also please listen to this excerpt about what Ange does and what the coaches and experts do. Around 22 minutes onwards

This is a little deeper though. In this window we're not landing the players at the age that Modric, Eriksen, Berbatov were when they joined. Ditto Romero, VDV, Bentancur etc. None of these past or present players joined us as 18 year olds. We grabbed them at the right time on their trajectory. Early twenties.

I think that is what I was hoping for in this window, moreso than the elite players.
That would be great. But failing that there are other categories worth shopping in too.

What I don't understand is this. We have Phillips on loan, Vuskovic who is doing well. Surely some centre backs in our reserve team.

Id rather we play them than buy some second level toss from around Europe. On bloated wages. The we need to get rid of them.

I like Kinsky but we didn't need him. Austin. Was good enough.

We need to trust some players.

We are in a relegation battle with the manager's future uncertain after years of terminal decline. If you were one of those players would you sign this January?

The summer might be different, we might gain some momentum depending on how the season ends and who is in the dugout at that point.

I don’t get why we haven’t recalled Philips who we own and was doing well in the championship
All for longer term gain but he is a player we may need

Terminal decline is a bit harsh, last 6 seasons: 4th 6th 7th 4th 8th 5th - so no real trend of decline, more up & down. The issue is the performance this season

There may be a backup plan to recall a loan player or two if we can't sign any of our real targets.

Recalling them and involving them earlier would have meant not being able to send them out on loan again this season if we then went on to sign some players.

Not sure I agree with your last point.

We started this season with Venom, Forster, Austin, Whiteman
We probably start next season with Venom, Kinsky, Austin and one of Keeley or Gunter

I'd call that steady progress to having a deep quality squad. We haven't broken the bank either.

And even more so the performances during our two month injury crisis. Before that we were within touching distance of a similar finish again.

I suppose my point is this. We had Austin in our ranks and we didn't trust him. I like Kinski
Y he's a very good looking player, good on the ball, good in the air. I think he is a great signing so don't get me wrong on that one.. did we need to sign him? That's my point.

I'm basically saying I'm wondering if Ange is ok with playing the young players in tricky positions. He seems to be okay playing them in forward positions but not in defensive or goalkeeper positions. That's a lack of trust for me. Well I don't want to happen is for us to get into a position in the summer where we have a bloated squad of second level players on high wages who we then need to get rid of. We have just gone through this purge process and it's time not to do it again.

I'm with you on that. We've all watched our squad proliferate and then have to purged many times in the last 24 years. I've rarely seen our squad optimal, if ever. We are actually quite close. I think as long as Forster and Whiteman roll off then the Kinsky addition is about right.

I always talk about the 2 options you have as a club. The first is that when a good player comes along in the market and you can close it, then you conclude the deal regardless of position. The second is you prioritise and only target certain positions knowing that you may not close the deals and end up with no incremental improvements. Gray springs to mind here. I think Spurs plan was to leave him at Leeds and move him this summer, but then Brentford made their move last summer and we had to change our transfer plans. I admired that assertiveness of our club.

I'm guessing in our model, Kinsky was earmarked and then the stars aligned to close the deal. What we're seeing in other positions, that is not the case. It is become extremely difficult to close some squad upgrades.
