The Goon Thread

I love the gap we have created between ourselves and Arsenal. The season has a long way to go but it's a gap which provides us breathing space for when we drop inevitable points along the way.

As has been said before, the real difference is that we barely drop points against the teams that we should beat, the likes of Wigan and WBA, sides that we struggled to beat last season but we have moved up a gear from that time. To my mind, we have dropped only 7 points against sides that we ought to have beaten; 3 v Stoke, 2 v Wolves, 2 v Swansea; compare that to our rivals and Arsenal have lost 1 more point, than the 7 we dropped, in their last three fixtures against sides which they ought to be beating.... impressive work from our club!

They've finished above us for about 15 years, so in their minds it won't count.

In their minds it will HURT a hell of a lot, but their Pikey Gooner mouths will spew a load of 'wait until you've been above us for as lone as we've been above you' gonads. My response will be to ask them how they feel about it, smile and leave.

If they fail to finish in the top 4, they will be safe financially as they have barely spent within the transfer market recently. I do think though that it will scupper some of their potential transfer dealings over the summer as players choose not to move to Arsenal because they are not CL and because Arsenal will not be able to justify the finance whilst their position in the future top 4 is in doubt.

Also means some players will run down their contracts or wont sign new ones till they see if arse get back in the euro cup.

I think the reason that they haven't spent in the transfer market is because they didn't make as much on selling the Highbury flats as they had budgeted for and because they are still paying for their stadium. A stadium which was financed on the assumption of getting Champions League football. They are a generally well run club, so finishing outside the top four will not be fatal but it will affect them and the targets they can realistically go for in the summer.

More than anything, finishing outside of the top four will be another nail in Wenger's coffin. However much we all think that he has lost it, he is over achieving with the players he has at his disposal and I doubt that anyone coming in, given the same resources, will do as well as he has.

65 looks like being more than enough for a top 4 place so manypoints have arsenal and liverpool recently. we can fall over that line just by winning most of the easy home games.

we need to be making sure we finish above chelsea and going through to the group stages automatically. makes such difference to who you can sign in the summer and also no excuse for the likes of luka to look elsewhere

We need to hope that wenger stays in charge as long as possible, i would even let them win the f.a. cup if it meant he stayed in charge for another year. Not the euro ciup we should be the first london team to do that.

If they finish outside the Top 4 and van Persie leaves, I think they will officially enter midtable mediocrity for the foreseeable future

For some reason I thought van Persies contract ended this year, but they will have to shift him in the summer if he doesn't want to resign

Perfectly fine by me, they have a fairly decent academy, i'm sure their owners can make quite a bit of money being a selling club.

Long may it continue.

A good point made about Wenger, I raised the same notion either earlier in this thread or on the old board. Arsenal aren't half the team that they used to be and without RVP would look very ordinary based on their squad.

The only other good players that they have are; Vermaelen, Wheelchair, Sagna and Arteta. Song is good but not a top 4 player and as for the rest..unless I've forgotten someone obvious, the players are barely top 6 quality.

Great thread. Hello any gooners reading this!!! I know some of our fans dislike these type of threads as it sometimes comes back to bite us on the ass but I think this day does need planning.
