The "DM" thread

Significant speculation that we want a new DM/6 type player with Hojbjerg likely to leave, but no rumours on specific targets concrete enough for a thread.

Bissouma has been too inconsistent, we will have a lot of games. Hojbjerg has been important at times. Makes sense that we'd want a player for that role.

I think it's a bit of a headache position. Not exactly a great market and Ange's demands for that role are quite high. I think we should be looking for real press resistance, ability to progress the ball really well through dribbling and/or passing as well as real ability to defend transitions/space along with discipline and positioning defensively for when we're defending in a settled way.

So we're looking for a fantastic player essentially. If we're to sign someone who pushes us on from where we are. The combination of defensive and on the ball ability is rather rare. Bonus points for being tall, strong and good at defending set pieces.

To be worth spending a lot if money on the player would have to be significantly better than however good Ange thinks Bentacur would be there. Up at the level of Bissouma at his best, or better.

Ederson at Atalanta has been linked. Some rumours that PSG may sell Ugarte. Everton may sell Onana. Guimaraes probably isn't gettable for us. Palhinha is a bit too old/expensive? Joao Neves at Benfica is highly rated, but only 19 and would he be defensively/physically ready for that role? Others may disagree, but I'm not seeing the perfect signing anywhere.

Who could be THE solution now? Or could we end up going for a younger player? We also have some great talent in our academy, particularly in Hall for that role.

Paulinha misses too many games for me for the price
What little I’ve seen of ederson he would be a great fit
We missed the boat on Wharton which is a shame as he would be amazing.. I’d genuinely throw them an offer to double their money on him now as he has everything and more. I haven’t seen anyone come to this league and do as much one touch passing as him
What about Costa at wolves?

Seems red bull have just bought a stake in leeds and slso become their shirt sponsor.

Makes it a more difficult to get gray. I'd still put a bid in to test the waters. Especially if royal is off.

Gonna be RB Leeds soon then?

Does he? I’d challenge you on that pal. Played 35 and 33 league games in the two years at Fulham. More than Biss has managed for us!

Has he ? With his suspensions?
I haven’t checked of course but I’d be nervous as hell having a dm who gets booked every other game in a passive side doing that in an aggressive one like ours

It’s what Wikipedia tells me!

I was similarly nervous before I checked recently, but what the figures suggest to me is that he has the intelligence to manage playing on the edge.

I’m not sure he’s good enough on the ball for what we’re looking for - Gray is probably more suited to the possession-based style we’re aiming for - but he’d be very effective at stopping teams playing through us, assuming Ange played him to his strengths.

I’m not sure he has the smarts
He plays a for a poor side and looks good
In fact he plays for an inconsistent side and I wonder how much of that is key players fading in and out at varying stages of the season.. including him
I’ve never seen him play poor I have to say
But his fee and age combo makes it a poor move IMO

Last thing on the smarts piece - he managed to average 82 mins per appearance, which again, to me, suggests he knows how to manage being on a booking.

But I definitely can see age + fee (+ above limitations) make him probably a suboptimal fit for us. Just trying round out the picture on him.

He isn’t a poor player
Quite the opposite
But for me we need control and I haven’t seen that from.
He will likely go to Bayern this summer if they can get that deal done and it will be a great move for both sides

I don't really think there's a perfect answer here. Whoever we get, short of Rodri, is probably going to have spells like Bissouma. Not to say we can't do better than Bissouma, but it's a very difficult role to play. Expected to do everything in the busiest part of the pitch.

For me he's just a more skillful Vinnie Jones. Don't rate him. Has to make a lot of really stupid challenges, because he doesn't read the game well enough, and isn't mobile enough. A clear no go for me, and it would surprise me if he was even on Ange's radar.

I think a younger player like Gray makes a lot of sense. If he pushes on quickly, great, if not at least he's an option and along with Bissouma and Bentancur we'd have good options.

But I can also see the case for trying to get that real here and now difference maker for that role if the right player is possible to sign.
