The Centre Forward thread

Social media in general is an absolute cancer on society. It’s literally rewired people’s brains. The worst aspect now is it’s almost impossible to completely avoid it. The ban on under-16s is something I 100% support as a father with two teenagers. I don’t really count old-school message boards such as this in the same way as your Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, and YT, etc.

Sadly it is boith unavoidable and a very, very real part of how things get 'done' in the world. Apalling as that might be to acknowledge!
I have said for the past 15 years it needs to be a specific area of media studies which is taught in schools with regards to uses, ramifications, how it can be positive and also how to disengage from it. Social media is a tool, as is everything about it. The biggest thing for me would be the teach the differential between news and 'content'. These companies are very clever in how they've re-wired us. Instead of shouting at it, we need to understand it and mitigate its negative powers...

It’s never going to get better. We missed the chance to add guardrails. Now you’ve got companies like Meta who make glasses with cameras for perverts and other weirdos to film people in public without permission knowledge of it. It was bad enough with phones, but at least there was some physical sign of being filmed in most cases. Social media, the companies and the people employed by them are a stain on humanity.

Agreed.
It's why the only hope is education of what it is.

I see your point, but note that if you are in public, you will already be being filmed from several angles of security cameras.

And sometimes those camera glasses can be a good thing e.g. if police are harassing you for no reason, or those US traffic stops with angry police / ICE, or creepy guys approaching women, or crazy women alleging something happened which did not. Note a LOT of people have dashcams so they can prove/dispute what happened, so it is a bit like that. And NO, I do not own or wear those camera glasses, before you start!

I’m not sure I’d compare Meta pervert glasses to security cameras. Nor dashcam, which in normal circumstances doesn’t identify anyone. And for every viral ‘thank GHod that was filmed!’ moment, how many are of people just going about their day and don’t want to be filmed? People being tricked into something, women being harassed, whatever the fudge else these too-online weirdos want to film. All for a few likes? It’s pathetic that we’ve allowed that to happen.

Has the crime rate lowered with the omnipotent nature of CCTV or are we slowly allowing ourselves to succumb to centralized control over every aspect of our daily lives?

It's a good question and I guess my view on that is that even if it doesn't stop the crime, at least it can help prosecute and convict? I understand the concerns there, but I think there's far greater risk from private companies. They have billions and billions of dollars at stake, whereas most governments could barely run a children's birthday party.

Anyway...how's the new center forward coming along...
