So who are we getting? we're all pretty much agreed that we certainly need one but who?

Chiriches? never seen him play but i've read he's poor at heading. I said a few days ago that i would give him a miss purely for that reason being that we're already horrendous at defending corners and a cb that can't head the ball won't help one bit.

Alderweirld? i doubt we're interested (well he's certainly not first choice anyway). Seen him a few times and he seems more a rb than a cb to me.

Rami? well he's available. Very good cb in the Kaboul mould. Negative being he's 27 and we might be looking for someone younger.

Sakho ? wants to leave PSG. I like what i've seen of him but he's a left sided cb like Vertonghen.



Anyone got any other realistic targets?

think Chiriches is the priority and if we think a deal will happen in Jan then we may attempt to cope with what we have until then (Capoue as a CB in dire circumstance) if we can't get assurances on that then i think we'll move on Alderweirld this summer.

Vert, Kaboul, Dawson with Fryers & Capoue as options if forced

suspect as billyiddo said, either we have a deal for Chiriches (now or January), or we will probably add one more
 
I very much doubt we'd be willing to wait until January for anyone with Kaboul not 100% fit and Vertonghen out. Capoue i read can play there but not ideal at all (and he'll be covering Sandro who is a player not 100% either). Half a season with 3 cb's? doubt it.
 
Rolando, Bartra and Ilori are some others we've been linked to.

I think we'll get Chiriches. Wasn't the Steaua president's parole hearing today, and part of his case was that he needed to be released to sign off the deal or something?
 
Doria, hearing Tim Vickery absolutely purrrr about him makes me choose him, especially as we seem minted this summer :)

Depends on how highly AVB and Baldini rate Capoue as a central defender, if at all.

Like most people here I imagine we will be bringing in another central defender, but if they rate Capoue highly enough there and plan on using a youngster in the EL for at least some of the games then I could see us wait until January if that means getting the player we really want.

that would work he would get enough games and ease our cb injury worries - the brazil crew already here would take him under wing - we will then truly be samba spurs perhaps just missing a certain brazil cf..........have you heard of L Damaio?????????????????????????????

*Poor at heading doesn't = can't head the ball
*A younger player (who is a back-up) may well still be able to improve that aspect of his game
*If you're going to dismiss an option for one reason alone, it'd probably be best to do it on the basis of more that just something you read when you've not seen him perform and allow you to form your own informed opinion

many football experts in Romania say heading, dealing with the aerial side of defending, is Chiriches's weakness

I've seen that reported too and so I'm inclined to believe it.

There's a big difference between saying that and saying that "he can't head the ball" though.

It could be like me saying that Sandro's weakness is his passing, I rate him very highly and his biggest weakness is a weakness in that context. Saying "Sandro can't pass the ball" based on my opinion would be flawed. On the other hand it could be like me saying that Alan Hutton's biggest weakness is his defending, something a rather large number of highly critical and generalised statements could be based on and be valid.

That's why you pair him with one of Kaboul or Dawson, rather than with Verts.

Even Stoke don't have two Carroll/Lukaku/Benteke type forwards.
 
Jan is deceptively good in the air.

Vertonghen aerial duels on per game = 2.2
Vertonghen aerial duels win percentage = 61%(54/89)

Dawson aerial duels won per game = 2.5
Dawson aerial duels win percentage = 61%(81/133)
