If we are planning on losing Kaboul and Dawson this summer, then Coloccini would be a good player to bring in, but I'm not sure if I'd have him as my new first choice alongside Vertonghen. If Vertonghen however does leave then he'd be a good choice to have alongside a younger CB (Vlad, Veltman, Martins Indi). I guess I'm just not overly impressed with our senior defenders. We are at a time in our club history where we need a fairly large defensive overhaul. Dawson isn't getting any younger (although funnily enough he is two years younger than Coloccini), Kaboul's injuries look to have taken a toll on him and his fitness is unreliable and Vertonghen unfortunately seems to be looking towards the exit door.
Really we need to buy experienced quality to at least guide the younger players. I don't think we have the finances nor the stature to bring in a really top player at the top of their game, but I think defence is one area where you do need an older head to command things. Neither Daws nor Kaboul show signs of being that player.

In truth there are v.few experienced CBS with pl experience we could get.

I like John Stones, but I don't think we'd be able to prise him away from Everton. It's too early in his career for that sort of move given that he is at his boyhood club and all.
On the experienced CB front, I've seen we have been linked with Andrea Ranocchia. I know very little about Italian football, so anyone able to talk about this guy??
Also we are apparently looking at Gonzalo Castro from Bayer Leverkusen. What do our Bundesliga experts think?

Its not about paying 40m, its about the manager having ownership of the decisions of who he coaches not some two bit fan like you, me or Levy.
This is what is mainly wrong with this club. There should be one person choosing the players.

No one the past summer was outside our budget constraints. That should have show through signing Lamela for £30,000,000 on deadline day
