The all new Striker thread..

I really cant believe we have started another season with one striker. I know other players can do a job there but if Levy has true aspirations of finishing in the top 4 you would think he would give his manager the tools to do it.

We havent learnt are lesson from when Harry was in charge, when we started the 2011/12 season late because we didnt sign Parker or Adebayor until the end of August and when ended up finishing 1pt behind Ar5ena1.

So annoyed right now, Man U were there for the taking today and we had no options. We have started the season with 1 striker we have faith with and who is a kid. Think Levy has done a good job with Spurs but this penny pinching is costing us

I dont think its penny pinching. Players who we are going to want won't jump at the chance of joining us as they'll think there's a chance that a CL club will come in for them. It means that buying players will often take longer for us. Someone like Everton or Stoke wouldnt face this problem as player they're after generally wont be of interest to a CL team.

Also, whilst we clearly need another CF, I think we're more lacking in the poitions behind the CF. We lack a consistent creator

You're talking about Kane as if he just debuted in the league. He's anything but a kid at this point. As for 2011/12, August was not the problem. It was Feb-Mar where we managed just 6 points out of a possible 24, thanks to 'Arry taking his eye off the ball.

I think that's a bigger issue, we have players who will take chances, what we don't have is the player that can create a clear chance or a goal all on their own

not sure we can afford one though

Kane has just turned 22 years old. He has 142 professional appearances to his name. 48 of them have come in the premier league.

Look at last seasons main strikers who finished in the top 4;
Costa 313 appearances
Aguero 452 "
Giroud 345 "
Rooney 557 "

Kane IS a kid he's still learning, his body will really start to develop this season and next like Bale's did at this age. To start the season with only him as a striking option is farcical for me. We all know Ade and Bobby are off, I admit the transfer window closing at the end of August doesnt help matters we need two strikers/Wing forwards asap. And if being greedy we need a centre mid and someone who can push Eriksen

there's no point signing just anyone though

there's a an adage in politics about "something", "we have to do something, this is something, therefore we must do it"

which is gonads, whilst having 1 striker is obviously not optimal, having 2 strikers, one of whom isn't a good fit for the squad or premier league standard, is worse

Yarmolenko looked nice. I know I know, it's just YouTube and he's not really a striker. But he does look like he can create his own chances.

But we have known for the last 6 months that we will need at least 1 striker this window. That is ample time to identify and buy a suitable player. With the way we have balanced the books over the past 5 years if paying a little more than we like for the right player so be it, if it is the right player it would be worth it.
You said we have smart people at the club then they need to show it.

Was it not you who said Lamela could play as a striker? WTF. How many goals has he scored in this league that you think he could do this job.

You also said Soldado would be our back up striker to Kane? That is all well and dandy but if he was really rated the manager would have brought him on in the last 15 minutes at least when we were looking for a goal.

personally I've not seen any forward move yet who I would consider good enough for us that we could afford

my opinion on Lamela's goal scoring ability is based mainly on his time at Roma

Soldado isn't match fit I guess, if he doesn't move on i'm sure that will be addressed, if he does we'll replace him so the whole point is moot

It irrelevant as to whether you or I have seen a suitable forward because neither of us have extensive world wide scouting networks, from our club I would expect much better.

Besides I also think considering how well we have balanced the books over teh last 5 years I do not think it is unreasonable to have to play a little more than we would like to bring in a player for an important position. We have drastically cut our wage bill in comparison to last season, and have brought money in from sales, but irrespective of that I would have expected that a club that finished 5th in the league should have at least £30m to spend at the beginning of the window.

With the greatest respect dude based on the last 2 seasons you need to reassess your opinion on him because he is not even excel in the position he normally played in at Roma

Considering Soldado's ineffectiveness in front of goal in open play it was dumb to start the season with him being the only have recognised striker in the squad because if for some reason Kane is having quiet game we are with out a striker from the bench who can help the cause

Which likely means we're not interested, else I don't see how they could pip us to him. Looks like the scouting team rates N'jie higher, plus he's younger.

Surely Njie and Yarmolenko are completely different types of player and play in different positions?

Not particularly: I believe Yarmolenko plays in the right wing/inside forward slot, which is likely where we'll put N'Jie if we do end up signing him. So they probably play in the same position, which implies that we'll only go for one of them at most.

And by the looks of it it's probably N'jie, since he wasn't in the squad in today's match. I honestly know fudge all about him. I just hope he turns out one of those what-a-find players.

Might as well prepare ourselves for some more unspectacular August results. Facts of life, I suppose, even if it means next May we're left wondering why we've finished a handful of points off the pace of our famous ambitions yet again.

How right you were

The idea that you chuck on someone to get a goal is one of the old school British football mentality, it is very rarely effective. If Kane gets injured, we no doubt have a problem. Although it's still not a case of sacrificing games. It's not ideal, but Chadli and Lamela can play upfront at a push.

In terms of Kane not delivering for say 80 mins of a match, the kind of player Kane is, he's always more likely in my view to deliver in those last 10 minutes than any 'back-up' striker we might want to sign. You wouldn't take Kane off if you needed a goal in the last 10 would you? Anyway, we scored loads of late goals last season. Eriksen is the king of late goals :)
