Relatively heated arguments and completely diverse points of view were previously to be found in the thread of player with little skill but loads of effort and perseverance

He was playing as one of three in midfield, Skipp sitting, Ndombele left of centre and Dele right of centre. He had a box to box role.... Trying to get up high when we had the ball but getting deep when we didn't have possession. I was at the game last night and his work rate was terrific. I know a few have made their minds up about him already but he is playing well in Nuno's new system. He won't look as good as he did under Poch but he will impact the game positively (as he has in most of our games when played in the midfield 3 so far).

Yeah that's how i saw it. He was on the right of the midfield 3 but clearly has plenty of license to get forward, and he often end up as the furthest forward. What I like about his game is his unrelenting willingness to get in the box. Valuable as for some reason we never seem to have numbers inside the box, especially so when Kane drops deep

Which heat map?

4-3-3. Alli given a lot of freedom to get forward when we have control of the ball. As it should be.

Yes, he was playing on the right of the midfield 3. At times it seemed him and Lo Celso were almost swapping positions as Dele was ahead of him a fair bit of the game.
Dele is naturally a more attacking player and Lo Celso a midfielder so it's to be expected. Nuno should be swapping their positions.

Look at his pass map, it has him located ahead of Lo Celso hell he was ahead of Kane for large parts of the game. He was not the right hand side midfielder, he played off the top.

Compare his heat maps with Lo Celso who was ostensibly playing RWF and Ndombele who was playing in midfield. Dele is significantly further advanced than Ndombele, and he's also further advanced than Lo Celso. I know you were at the game but I find it surprising you think he was playing on the right. He filled in there at times but the majority of his time was off Kane in his more classic position. For me we played 4231 and not 433 as evidenced by the average positions and heat maps.

Heat maps obviously skews towards what happens when in possession.

Numerical formation descriptions are typically used about how teams set up when defending.

The first picture you showed has Davies and Tanganga in line with or ahead of Skipp and Ndombele. Wouldn't say that we played a 2-4-4, tough that's what it looks like from that heat map.

To me it looked like a 4-3-3 when defending, quite clearly.

Theres no excuses for either in a professional, but it's far easier to improve your effort than your skill sets.

If it was a 433 who was the 3rd because look at the heat maps and passing maps I posted. Lo Celso was as much in the midfield areas as Dele. Dele's actions all came from a further advanced position than GLC.

If you look at the passing map you'd think GLC was the 3rd man not Dele....

In what way has he shown little effort in the games this season? Please explain, because I can not see that he has shown any less effort than any other random player. He's certainly shown more effort than for example Kane.

It was 433 without a doubt not that formations matter much anyway.
I watched this game hours after it ended knowing the results and the scorers.
It was mind numbing but at least I could just stare at where people were playing without any chance of getting excited.

Ndombele was on the left of the 3 man midfield with Alli on the right. Then at some point in second half they swapped over briefly.
Dele moved to the left premanently when Hojbjerg came on.

I think Nuno's idea was that LoCelso would drop back to help Ndombele. And that was why they were playing on the same side.

I don't know what position Tanguy should play,
I dont know where he wants to play,
If clubs are looking for ransom, to pay his wages whilst he is on loan, we don't have any money.
What Tanguy does have is a very particular set of skills,
Skills he has acquired over a short career,
Skills that make him a nightmare for the opposition.
If you let him free, thatll be the end of it, he wont annoy you, he won't anger you,
But if you don't, he will annoy you, he will anger you,
And he will be sold.

I was at the game. It was a clear 4-3-3 with Skipp deep and Ndombele and Dele going box to box on the LHS and RHS. Dele’s workrate was incredible in joining our attacks and looking to break the line, which is why his passmap position is higher up. He has clearly done loads of fitness work over the summer and it is showing on the pitch.

I would imagine that Nuno would be massively pleased with Dele in that game. He gave pretty much the perfect performance for a box to box player in a midfield 3. I could’ve been watching Wjinaldum in Klopp’s Liverpool team.

The cavaet - we have to play whatever the result is; a world beater or a park player!
