Tanguy Ndombele

In the monochrome time when I played us young uns use to say when forwards or midfields started playing deeper they had got "old mans disease" and weren't quick or brave enough to play in the danger areas, but in this era of pressing theres no hiding place. With his control, dribbling and passing I think Ndembele would serve us better in the final third, but he is the only player we have that can carry the ball from our half beating players it's a real dilemma.

The similarities with Mousa Dembele are uncanny in the way he never seems worried about beating one or two men. Stephen is right though, he needs to follow up these moments of skill with hurting the opposition.

TBF moussa at this age was still playing as a forward in Holland and NOT setting the world alight

Dembele surely looked destined to become the new Ronaldo Nazario when he was scoring goals like this in his early 20s! Funny how he and Taarabt went from being exceptionally talented attackers to ending up as holding midfielders.

It's a dilemma, but a good one to have. A quality player that can play well in multiple roles and multiple positions. Gives us options and flexibility in addition to quality.

Personally I lean more towards him playing deep. Not sure he'll rack up enough goals and assists playing as a #10.

Think a lot of his defensive work has been really rather good recently. Becoming a complete central midfielder.

At some point players like Eden Hazard and Salad got so good and found it so easy to make players look stupid, they got an extra couple of yards because players didn't want to be shown up.

Same should happen to Ndombele eventually, particularly when he gets into the box, you just think that Ndombele can do his jelly legs flik flak mondo bondo jizzy jazzy and win a pelanty easy peasy

If we can get another strong central midfield player who can also dribble and pass (Soumare please Mr Levy) to partner Hojbjerg in midfield then Ndombele can revert to the middle of the 3 behind the striker.

Hojbjerg, Soumare, Son, Ndombele, Moura/Bergwijn, Kane is a very, very strong midfield and attack unit. Purchase a ready made CB pair like Ginter and Elvedi from Monchengladbach as well and we'd be in business next season.

Like you say I don't believe he has the killer instinct and desire to score goals enough and the assists you get with that desire as well to play ACM. He is so talented though that he can dona job there.

In my ideal world we move to a central 3 and play Ndombele, Hojberg and GLC. Then you get those moments we had on Sunday when GLC came inside and they bounced a few passes off each other.

It needs to be more of an inverted triangle and that's what I think will get the best out of both because GLC is wasted out on the right.

Son---------------------------Kane------------------Bale/Moura/An.Other

-------------Ndombele------------------GLC-----------

--------------------------------Hojberg

Almost look like the dreaded diamond [emoji28]

That how I would see it. Either the 41212 diamond or standard 433 .

The talk of him playing deeper or in the 10 role is too binary. Both him and LoCelso would benefit more from being what you could say are general all round midfielders.

In Ndombele s case, his attacking actions have been curtailed by his move backwards. I'm not saying they have to be, but those defence splitting passes, no look passes and straight at the heart runs have all but dried up. I do think he prefers the game in front of him though, so a move to 10 can have you facing your own goal a lot which imo doesn't suit him. Hence a formation change might allow him (and us) the best of both worlds.

Probably ain't gonna happen though.

I think that Poch was very much trying to move us towards the diamond. I think in his mind he had Dier sitting deep behind Lo Celso and Ndombele with Bruno Fernandes at the tip of it. Kane and Son up front with Dele being able to play instead of either Fernandes or Son. The width was to come from attacking full backs in Aurier and Sessegnon

Of course Dier would've been the big weak point in that and we probably would've had to use the January or next summer window to try to bring in a proper defensive midfield player but the fact that Poch had used a diamond on a few occasions and considering the signings that he was making I think that was the evolution that Poch had in mind for us. Remember that in many ways the diamond is the perfect system to counter the 4-3-3 that was becoming the system that most of the biggest clubs were playing so I can see why Poch was moving us towards that.

This is true, but sadly part of Pochs demise as he played the diamond a lot but without the prime players being available for it. (Lo Celso and Ndombele either injured or taking an age to get up to speed).

It is the hardest system to get right though. The wide FBs have to be on point.

I agree he certainly liked, and enjoyed, the diamond, but don't you think he was also seriously investigating 4-3-3? I always maintained that he was increasingly of the mindset that Liverpool's 4-3-3 was the most efficient and effective way to play. I always thought that was why he was so keen to bring Dybala in personally...in fact, I have often wondered if we'd been able to pull the signing off whether we'd be in a very different place today with him still in charge?

I'm not sure how Dybala fits into a 433 with Kane. He's not really a wide attacker more of a SS. Unless Poch Intended on a midfield 3 of Ndombele, Lo Celso and Dybala.

I prefer the idea of a 433 and still think we should play that now but with Poch it seems a lot more likely that he was going for a diamond it also fits his recruitment intentions more.

Ndombele and Lo Celso either side with possibly Dier at the base and Dybala/Fernandes at the tip.

Where would Dybala play in a 433?
