Modric set for showdown talks with Spurs

Luka Modric has been banished to training on his own for Tottenham by new manager Andre Villas Boas.

Modric has been trying to push through a move to Real Madrid all Summer but has seen Daniel Levy and the Tottenham management digging their hills in and not allowing him to move for less than £40 million. It is reported that Real Madrid have offered £30 million for the star but are not prepared to go beyond this.

Modric did not travel with the squad for their pre-season visit to Spain before a friendly with Valencia and is fast becoming an outcast at the club and is worried for his future. Villas Boas is treating Modric in much the same way as he treated Alex and Nicolas Anelka last year with Chelsea much to the astonishment of many Chelsea stars – it remains to be seen how the other Tottenham players feel about his treatment.

Opinion – I can understand Tottenham wanting to get the most money for the star, however for two seasons now Modric has been trying to leave Tottenham – they are not in the Champions League and maybe now is the time they should let him move on. He is going to become a distraction to the other Tottenham players and they will undoubtedly be annoyed at the way that he is being treated by Andre Villas Boas as he has been an integral member of the squad for so long. It’s a shame it’s come to this as Modric as always given his all for Tottenham and the way he is being treated is again testament to Andre Villas Boas questionable man management skills. Could the Modric situation be the undoing of the new Tottenham squad in much the same way as he lost the dressing room at Chelsea because of his treatment of Anelka.

More for the Leandro is close phalanx:

lobo on FTL re: Leandro:
Can tell you with 100% certainty that terms for damaio are agreed. Fee not yet tho.
Know someone involved in the deal and that is what i was told

If I'm not careful I might get excited.

Big fudging deal, Modric agreed terms with Real Madrid about 2 months ago so that means absolutely nothing

Don't hold your breath guys, there are 20 days for Levy to negotiate terms for payment

Even if Inter want to sell, and Damiao wants to come here, and we agree the cost and the wages and the agent fees... DL will then try to structure a 4+2 year deal with US$10m up front and US$2m per year for 4 years with a bonus sell on percentage dependent on the number of shots on target against Southampton away from home....

If Juventus are really going for him they've probably tapped him up already. We wouldn't stand a chance unless he dreams of playing in the PL and thinks Serie A is toss.

He's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack..

Doubt we're seriously in for M'Vila, I'm pretty convinced Luka will go to Madrid with Sahin coming the other way, probably in the last few days of the window.

Would love llorente, M'Villa would be a surprise as not the area I would have thought we need to prioritize but still absolute quality when he wants to be. The next week could be exciting even if I remain to be convinced that AVB is getting the backing he thought he might (not based on anything other than pure speculation on my part so treat it as such).

Really? I think it seems like Sahin would want to stay and fight for his place. He'd be interesting though, was immense for Dortmund the season before going to Real.

Stoke City’s ambitious bid to sign Michael Owen is in the balance after it emerged the club and the player are nowhere near agreeing terms.

Owen is keen to remain in the Premier League after his release from Manchester United at the end of last season and has held talks with Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager.

But the deal looks doomed as Stoke are only prepared to offer the 32 year-old a structured deal based on appearances, due to his poor injury record at United. Owen spent three seasons at Old Trafford but made only four appearances in his final campaign and has not played since United’s Champions League clash with Otelul Galati in November.

Stoke were planning to offer Owen a 12-month deal with the promise of an extension if he plays a certain number of games, a similar deal to the one offered to Jonathan Woodgate last summer. But Owen’s representatives are believed to be seeking a more lucrative package and Stoke are now looking at other forwards, with Spurs’ England international Jermain Defoe a likely target if fringe players are sold to raise money.

Joey Barton will not be signing for Fleetwood Town after the League Two club confirmed they have failed to agree a loan deal. Barton, the QPR midfielder, has been training with Fleetwood since the end of last month but will now return to Rangers. The 29 year-old is serving a 12-game ban after his dismissal against Emirates Marketing Project on the final day of last season and later being found guilty of two counts of violent conduct by the Football Association. Blackpool has emerged as a potential destination.

Steve Kean’s reign at Blackburn Rovers appears to be even more uncertain after Rovers’ global advisor, Shebby Singh, insisted that he would be sacked if he loses three games in a row this season.

El Hadji Diouf, the former Blackburn winger, has agreed to sign for Neil Warnock, barely 18 months after the Leeds manager branded him a “sewer rat”.

Terry Venables, the former England manager, made a successful start to his reign as technical advisor at Wembley FC, guiding the Combined Counties League Premier Division side to a 3-2 win over Langford in their FA Cup extra preliminary round tie. Wembley’s squad included a string of recognised names including Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Ray Parlour, Claudio Caniggia and Brian McBride.

Substitute Chris Iwelumo’s extra-time goal secured victory for Gianfranco Zola in his first competitive game in charge of Watford.

Zola is back in management after he was sacked by West Ham two years ago and his late substitution paid off as striker Iwelumo found the net in the 108th minute to see off League Two Wycombe in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

Stale Solbakken endured a difficult debut in English football as his new Wolverhampton Wanderers team secured a nervy 7-6 win on penalties over Aldershot. Steve Bruce almost suffered embarrassment in his first game in charge of Hull City before a 7-6 victory over Rotherham, also on penalties.
