one or two deadline deals are ok when the squad needs a little boost in certain areas, but they are not ok for the first team. Big players, first teamers, need to be signed earlier. Plus, the longer it goes on and we get closer to deadline day, the less likely clubs will want to sell their top players. They too will have no time to find a replacement. Its a mess all round
There is no chance the window will close without additions to the front line whether that be permanent or loan deals by September 1st. AVB knows perfectly well that Kane and Defoe will not cut it for a run at a CL spot, backup at best.
The striker area is the one critical area that needs strengthening I'm sure Levy and AVB are working hard to bring the right players into the club. It'll be like the last couple of seasons when clubs all rush to buy in the last few days of the window.
The alternative is to know the market. Something I think Comolli was pretty good at actually, moving for the lieks of Berbatov, Modric, Kaboul, Ekotto.... Although Comollis big failing was his eye was on two years away instead of the "now". Its something I think Redknapp wasnt so good at, with lots of talented players we might have grabbed passing by and out of reach. I would like to see AVB come back to this ideal more than gambling...
Redknapp was in charge for 7 transfer windows.
Counting VdV as a forward we brought in a total of 5 strikers/forwards in those 7 windows. Defoe, Keane, Crouch, VdV and Adebayor on loan. I'm ignoring Saha as it was obviously a stop gap.
Some of you are going on as if Levy is a money hoarder and our poor managers have had to fashion strikers out of clay on a turntable.
We've since seen 3 of those leave the club with little sign of replacement. IMO Siggy replaces Pienaar at a slight financial loss and probably similar wages. That leaves Keane, Crouch, Adebayor AND Pav needing replacements. I'd settle for 2 strikers to replace them and if Defoe leaves too then I'd want 2 world class additions.
I'd disagree that siggy replaces pienaar. As he is more likely to be used in the vdv role, he is more likely to be a keane/crouch/ade/pav replacement. We don't need as many strikers now we have moved to a formation with only one striker.
(Also, Ade on loan was the replacement for Crouch, so you can hardly include both of those in your list to replace)
Ah very true - still I said I only wanted 2 strikers to replace them ;-)
I agree about Siggy's role but I didn't necessarily mean a like for like replacement - if you look at the role that Pienaar played for Everton it was more advanced and central than with us. With us he was employed as a wideman and we're still drastically short in that department IMO
sherwood going to convince aVB to give kane a shot at first team action.

"I will sit down with the new manager and talk in more depth about his philosophy on loaning younger players.
"But I think there might be a chance of tact, because we don't really learn anything from sending players to the Championship for a second time."
so defoe + kane its is. maybe ade is just enough if we are playing one striker up front, bale as reserve.
That aint even funny dude.
Imagine if we just ended up with Kane
