Madrid plays Van der Vaart card in Modric face-off

Real Madrid did Tottenham a favour two summers ago by selling Spurs Rafael Van der Vaart for a cut-price fee. Bayern Munich had earlier attempted to sign the Dutchman for close to €20m, but the Madrid giants ultimately came to an agreement with the London club and its manager at the time, Harry Redknapp.

The deal taking Van der Vaart to Tottenham was worth €11m. This €9m discount can be seen as a favour from Florentino Pérez to Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, who, despite his reputation as a fierce negotiator, will surely not forget this act of kindness from his Madrid counterpart.

The move was completed on 31st August 2010, the last day of the transfer window, and had to be vetted by the Premier League, as the necessary paperwork was ruled to have arrived ten minutes late. However, the transfer was eventually given the green light.

This precedent should play into Real Madrid’s hands and points to the good relationship between the two clubs, in spite of the inevitable struggle that has erupted over the Modric deal.

Besides giving the Londoners a bargain on Van der Vaart, Real Madrid also paved the way for Tottenham to bring in Emmanuel Adebayor on loan last summer, when both clubs had been in the running to capture the Togo striker.

Mourinho had been delighted with the marksman’s performances in a Madrid shirt the previous campaign and was considering signing him as the club’s third striker. But Tottenham was also in the picture, and ultimately got its man after Madrid withdrew from the chase.

What a load of gonads that is. Harry did not negotiate the deal for 1 and did Madrid state there were no other offers for him?

I agree with Nayim that we did Madrid the favour. They didn't want to sell to a Champions League rival like Bayern or United. We kindly offered a viable alternative.

Without a link or telling us where a story is from it's hard to judge any given story.

The above one appears to be from Marca: http://www.marca.com/2012/07/21/en/football/real_madrid/1342852542.html

Yep it's from Marca, ie: Real Madrid's unofficial mouthpiece.

Yesterday's edition was almost dedicated to Luka Modric. Apparently he's Real Madrid's only option; they've no Plan B. Sweet: make them pay top fudging dollarz then! :D

They do respect that Levy is a notoriously difficult customer to deal with though. They don't know the half of it!

Yeah but they feel the same about us that theyre doing us a favour.

Lets be honest we all know that Madrid is the only club that seems interested and the only club we would sell to. We wont sell to anyone int he premiership and madrid are the only ones who can a) afford him and b) want him. So supply and demand and all that.

My point being that piece was written as though they did us a charitable turn. Equally we stepped in at the last minute to take an unwanted player off of their hands. So its not a one sided favour where we owe them anything.

Supply and demand... Have you seen the reports of PSG being interested? They are richer than Madrid, would probably pay us up front. Where he can go and play football with a few hundred million worth of talent....

Quite. They should ask Luka his experience of Daniel's 'gentleman's agreements'

Luka in a secret meeting with Perez:

Luka: So, you said you had everything wrapped up and ready to sign?
Perez: Yes, I struck a gentleman's agreement with Levy and it should all be done.
Luka: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Yeah but Modric wouldnt go to PSG and we can accept 100m bid from PSG but if Modric doesnt sign then he doesnt sign. Lets be honest most players would go to Madrid over PSG and I genuinely believe that Modric wouldnt mind playing in a team and have a chance of winning a brickload of stuff.

Anyways

They would go to madrid over psg yes, but what if the choice becomes psg or stay here?

Just tell him Madrid obviously don't think he's worthwhile as they won't pay the required fee..

Sorry but fudge him! All theoretical of course but if we accept 40m from PSG then Either Madrid match that and he goes there, or he has to decide between us and PSG, either way we'll have done nothing wrong and he'd have zero grounds for being tinkled off at us. The best thing that could happen is if PSG come in for him.

Honestly? Money talks, IMO. PSG could well turn his head. He can look at winning the league over there and honestly Im tempted to put a few quid on them for the CL this year.

Money does talk but the main criticism we have on players and if a players goes against money and to Real well we cant really then criticise him. As Gazza said it could really boil down to him staying with us or going somewhere like PSG.

We really do need PSG to make an offer, to increase the competition for Real, and for us to accept it but I would think that Modric would stay with us than go to PSG.

True.

But it can also work both ways; we could say to Modric that we'll only ever accept whichever deal is in the best interests of Tottenham Hotspur, and if that doesn't suit him, then he doesn't go anywhere. He can't complain about restraint of trade, as we've invited offers to come in for him; but we're not obliged to accept those which are not in our interests.

Bit of a poker game going on I reckon. But I'd say Modric is the one who is most at risk here; he's the pawn in a game of Russian roulette between Real Madrid and ourselves. But if both sides stick to their guns, then Modric ends up staying where he is - which, for him, would be quite an untenable position.

Our strength comes in the fact that, financially, we don't need to sell. We demonstrated this last summer by rejecting £40m from Chelsea. Real Madrid are used to the scenario whereby their money is too hard to refuse, but - in this situation - we can quite happily say no to them. So it's upto them to raise their offer to one which meets our expectations, or - at least - those which are speculated to be in the offing from either PSG or Man Utd.

I think PSG and Man Utd definitely have interest, but their lack of an official approach is probably due to the fact that Modric's advisors will have told them that they'd rather see whether they can move the player to Real Madrid first, as it's his preferred destination; no point soliciting Modric with offers from other clubs, if his mind is set on Real Madrid.

However, if things break down with Real Madrid, then Modric is forced into considering these other clubs. We're still in a strong position though, as those other clubs will know that we reason a deal wasn't done with Real Madrid was because they didn't meet our valuation. All bets are off then, because it becomes a true auction, other than this exclusive nonsense which Modric is seeking to achieve.

Levy is a smart cookie though, and he'll recall how - 12mths ago - this exclusivity was afforded to Chelsea. Therein, Modric seems to change his affinity like the wind, so what's to suggest that he couldn't suddenly develop a great passion for Manchester or Paris?
