He was a striker before turning into a GK around age 16-18, I do agree he is poor on the ball though.

No Vertonghen in Ajax's squad today for a friendly they're playing.

Sky Sports understands Borussia Monchengladbach remain favourites to land Junior Hoilett, but he has held talks with five Premier League clubs in recent weeks.
And Sky Sports has also learnt that his current club Blackburn have made a concerted effort to try and keep him.
Hoilett has long been linked with a move back to Germany, where he spent time on loan earlier in his career.
The 22-year-old Canadian-born striker also speaks fluent German and his brother plays there.
But he is still considering his options in England and a host of clubs have stepped up their interest in recent weeks.
Sky Sports understands, Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers,

Liverpool,

Saudi Sportswashing Machine and Everton

have all had contact with the player's representatives in recent weeks.
Hoilett is currently believed to be in England with his family, continuing talks.
Borussia, though, hope that the lure of UEFA Champions League football will win the day for them.

With the summer transfer window in full swing, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, Daniel Sturridge is linked with Liverpool and Tottenham.Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge is set for talks over his future with Liverpool
edging ahead of Tottenham in the race to sign him, according to Goal.com.Sturridge is currently undergoing treatment for viral meningitis but is considering his future at Stamford Bridge after falling out-of-favour under Robert Di Matteo during the second half of last season.Goal.com claim that Liverpool are leading Tottenham in the race to land the 22-year-old, with new Reds boss Brenden Rodgers making Sturridge one of his top summer transfer targets and is preparing a £10m move. The report also claims that both Liverpool and Tottenham have already made their interest in Sturridge known through third parties, but the Reds are willing to offer him a more attractive salary and regular first team football. An apparent ‘source’ told Goal.com:
“There are a few clubs interested but Liverpool are ready to make a big move,”“It would be a real statement for them and they could offer the player what he wants – in terms of money and playing time.”
Sturridge is keen for talks with Di Matteo after seeing his dreams of playing at the Euro’s vanish after losing his first team spot last season, and is fearful he may be hampered further after the arrival of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin. The former Emirates Marketing Project forward has two years to run on his current contract but has no intention of signing a new deal unless he can be assured of his future at the Bridge, soChelsea may decide to cash-in now if Di Matteo doesn’t see him in his first team plans next season.Liverpool are looking to strengthen their attacking options and Sturridge fits their remit of young players who could increase in value over time.Tottenham meanwhile are also keen to add more options to their attack and Andre Villas-Boas was a fan of the player during his time at Chelsea, although Sturridge would prefer a more central role after being deployed on the right by the Portuguese boss last season.

Just learned that Sylvie Van Der Vaart is pushing Rafa for a return to Hamburg. Seems ‪#HSV‬ could have the money to make it happen.

So Liverpool are willing to offer him more wages and regular first team football which puts them ahead of us in the battle for his services. Remind me how many strikers we have on our books at the moment in time, and yet we can't offer him regular first team football. Sounds like a delusional Liverpool fan still bitter over losing Sigurdsson to us.

Ajax playing a friendly today, Vertonghen not involved.

AFC Ajax ‏@AFCAjax
Opstelling Ajax: Vermeer; Van Rhijn, Alderweireld, Blind, Koppers; De Jong, Anita, Janssen; Özbiliz, Sigthórsson, Ebecilio.

edit: And just as I posted this:

akqayid @akqayid

As an FYI Verts is in UK since last night.

AVB will know all about Sturridge and it will depend how highly he rates him if Sturridge is available. AVB seemed to rate him at Chelsea and gave him plenty of playing time, but he didn't have a ton of options for that position.

I wouldn't be too bothered about him going to Liverpool as I don't rate him as highly as some seem to do.

See brick rumours like Sturridge would never excite me. I really don't rate Sturridge he is kinda like Marmite - some like him some don't - I'm in the latter camp.

Sigs doesn't excite me noadmittedly I haven't seen TOO much but I doubt many have. Half a season with Swansea doesn't constitute seein him TOO many times.

I am the most optimistic of Spurs fans out there but I'm not goin to get carried away because AVB is here and certainly not because Sigs is here. Like I say ill wait till end of the window before my excitement levels rise. Still a long way to go and certainly wouldn't expect all our signings to happen in the first week following Euros.

I saw him at Reading and Swansea and i'm sure he's gonna be a superstar. You could see how good he was going to be even in the early stages of his career which earned him his big money move to Germany. Never did i think he was a possibility this summer but i'm delighted we somehow managed to sign him.

Lille have confirmed that Salomon Kalou has penned a four-year contract with the club following his release by Chelsea

Its easy to forget he is a young player I think. He has a great deal of potential and there is a lot to like about him. his technique is good, and he is direct (which I quite like) and he was very successful cutting in from the right for Chelsea.

He is, however, so so so selfish! Could be a player who is accommodated rather than integrated, but as he is young perhaps that can change.

I will reserve judgement. I'm not sayin the guy cannot play and is rubbish just that he doesn't excite me.

Rossi - I think it is about time we started buyin players who WILL take us up a notch and by that I'm think two or three top quality first team players. Do we have the finances? I'm kinda thinkin we do if the Arab investment is true not to mention how much we have brought in over the last few weeks and couple of windows.

So its just high quality players I think we need to signal we mean business.

This is from February. He does seem to have a rather inflated view of himself. It also seems to be a common perception that he doesn't want to play on the wing, he wants to be the central striker. Goalscorer, not provider. I see him as a slight improvement on Defoe, but only because of his age.

Daniel Sturridge is unhappy at Chelsea and will look to move on in the summer if they do not finish in the top four.

Chelsea are facing a battle to qualify for next season's Champions League and the 22-year-old could ask to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer if they do not make it.

Reports have been doing the rounds that Sturridge is unhappy with being played out of position down the wing as Andre Villas-Boas keeps faith with the misfiring Fernando Torres.

Sturridge could look to move on anyway but failure to make the Champions League could be the final straw for the striker with Arsenal known to be waiting in the wings.

"Daniel will be distraught if Chelsea finish outside the top four, he's desperate to prove himself at the highest level and that means he wants Champions League football, not Europa League," a close friend has been quoted as saying in the Sun.

The Gunners have already made tentative enquiries over a possible move in the summer and a deal could be on the cards if things do not improve for Sturridge under the leadership of Villas-Boas.

He'll be 23 in September. Only a bit over two years younger than Lennon. Same age as Bale. So he's not THAT young, actually about time for him to start maturing a bit and start actually playing well, not just show promise or he will be another Adam Johnson imo. He has talent, but will he be able to actually step it up to the next level? Like I said, AVB will know him very well and is in a great position to make a decision should he become available.

As for Sturridge he's a very good player with bags of potential. Was one of the very few players who thrived under AVB at Chelsea and had an excellent 1st half a season. Yes he is greedy though but that didn't really become an issue until his form dropped. People were raving about him earlier on in the season but when his form dipped they noticed how lazy he was.

Tbh it's a no go anyway. His dad said a few weeks/months back how he doesn't like playing on the right and prefers playing centrally so if he does leave Chelski it's gonna be to a team that will play him in his preferred position.

Signal schmignal. I would rather sign good players than sign players that send a signal. I agree that Sigurdsson isn't an obvious improvement on what we have (VdV), but he seems like a talented and fairly effective footballer. All players in the world have some good youtube videos it seems, but I quite liked this one (already posted in the Sig thread): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UH9G6HTvUc&feature=player_embedded#! If you haven't watched it already I think it's worth a watch, showing most or all of his involvements in their game against United.

Are people seriously advocating Butland over Lloris? Butland might be a nice prospect, but Lloris is one of the best keepers in the world. You all sound like Liverpool fans after they lost Sigurdsson. Don't be silly.

Lloris would arguably be in the top ten of world 'keeper's at the moment, with saves like these to enjoy:

Then again, as stated in some of the other posts, we do have our own international 'keeper who has Europa and CL experience already at the club?
