He is a good guy, not your typical journalist. But he does have a lot of stories linked to AVB, and thus always have to bear in mind his sources likely have their own agenda to spin. But on Mouthino be nice to think we are working towards the January window because it really isn't that far away.

Sounds to me like personal terms were agreed but we couldn't agree a fee. Surprise surprise. This is entirely levys fault and may well be the downfall of avb.
Not the first time he has sold decent players and not adequately replaced them. Zokora anyone?

With the fee agreed, then revised player terms agreed - at that stage it was technically agreed according that article.
Only when Porto found that the player terms had been raised, they wanted to raise their terms commensurately.
Sounds more than close, sounds all but done at one point.

Why do people come back with this, "why didn't we do the deal earlier"? question
Two very simple answers
1. We needed to wait for the Modric deal to finalize to release the funds and/or not end up with Modric & Moutinho
2. Porto themselves was waiting to see if any of the big spenders was going to come shopping (e.g. City/Barca/PSG/etc.)

Or Duncan Castle was deliberately fed the information (by Levy/the board) as a damage limitation exercise, to deflect away and airbrust out our involvement in this catestrophic fudge up. It could be AVB's downfall. But who's fault would it really be?

It would make sense to get a pre-contract agreement sorted NOW and announce it on the first. Plenty of teams do it, why not us?

Depends on how desperate they really thought we are.
If they did this, it's pretty stupid, because in the end it didn't work for anybody
- They probably tinkled off their player, who is going to want to move more than ever
- They lost out on the maximum they would get for player (fee will go down next window)
- We didn't get a player we really need.
