Apparently AS suggest we intend to use the Modric money for targeting Leandro Damiao. Not sure where that leaves us in term of our creativity in midfield though

urgh, I posted earlier via mobile and it did not post

anyway

I think many here need to take a long look at themselves and what they think of Dawson.

Yes, Dawson is a FANTASTIC character and a very likeable lad considering he´s a professional footballer, however...

football is BUSINESS, and right now Dawson is 3rd-5th choice for CB. He has been injured a lot and maybe it is very good for all parties to cash in on him. 9m is very good, more to spend for us and he can maybe revive his England career.

I´ve always liked him, but I remember far too many games when he played not with King and he was pretty much pants. (City @ home last season was cringe worthy)

On his day he can be brilliant and he wears the badge on his sleeve and would pretty much die on the field for the club, but we have better now, and he is a defender of such quality that warming the bench will not suit him.

Fair enough. In which case, it goes both ways, and Campbell, Berbatov etc were entitled to leave Spurs as a business decision. If we are stripping all emotion away from our football club then I don't really understand why I support it. I don't support Morgan Stanley, or HSBC, or any company, so why should I or anyone support Tottenham Hotspur?

Think about this, since January we will have sold/released/loan end (and probably sold)

Modric assume we will get a replacement of some kind
Saha replacement for Pavlyuchenko when sold
Nelsen replacement for Bassong when he went on loan
Pavlyuchenko currently Kane is the replacement
Pienaar never really used, but Townsend back from loan
Kranjcar rarely used, replaced by Sigurdsson
Corluka Naughton back from loan
Adebayor Now signed permanently
Bassong Caulker back from loan
Huddlestone Livermore adds the body if not the creativity
Dawson no longer carrying a semi-injured player in King

and brought in

Sigurdsson replacement Kranjcar
Vertonghen replacement for King

Now I know that many of those players were not first choice but still that is losing a boatload of quality in depth. Everyone of those players has some ability. We really need to see a hell of a lot of movement coming in to make me feel good about this. For instance would you rather have Pavly, Pienaar, Kranjcar to call on as a sub or Townsend, Kane and Carroll? atm I am very worried

Not as serious as seems at first glance. The above comments explain the replacements. Some are not as good (e.g. Naughton for Corluka) or can be debated (Sigurdsson for Kranjcar and/or Pienaar) but the difference is not as dramatic as at first sight.

The main deficits would be the loss of Dawson and Huddlestone and Kane for Pavlyuchenko, none of which are the final situation. You could argue that with King we always needed an extra body, so perhaps we can manage with four specialists plus emergency cover (Livermore, Naughton or Walker?). With Huddlestone, Livermore is the replacement as defensive midfielder and emergency CB, although a significant drop-off in the creativity department.

Personally I don't see the point of letting Huddlestone and Dawson leave now. We could keep them at least to January to see how things work out (the new manager might reprieve them ;) ). I also wonder if we will replace Modric with two players if we can't get Moutinho, allowing Huddlestone to leave.

So all in all its more a reflection of a bloated squad rather than huge cutbacks. And thats with no mention of Bentley, Jenas and Dos Santos

If the BBC are correct about the Ade numbers -- £5m transfer fee and city paying 95k p/wk for the coming two years -- wow. Just.... wow.

£9m is good business for Dawson, no question. But personally I'd rather hold onto him if he'd be happy to compete for his place. Losing Dawson, now that Bassong is gone, leaves us with Kaboul, Gallas, Vertonghen and Caulker as recognised centre-backs. Caulker may have a great future ahead of him (and I really hope he does) but fact is; none of us know for certain that he's ready to step up to premiership level this season. On top of that, Gallas is now 35 years old. Again, I hope he has a great season for us, but he's just one serious knock away from retirement. Let's hope Vertonghen is the Next Big Thing for Spurs, but he's unproven in the premiership and might take a while to settle in.

So what happens if 15 minutes into our match against Norwich, the day after the transfer window shuts, Kaboul gets injured and is out for a few months? Do we really want a 35-year old, an unproven youngster and a premiership newbie to be our defensive unit for the first half of the season? Because that has the potential to go very wrong indeed. I just don't think 4 CBs is enough for a team challenging at the top of the premiership. Not if one of the four is a kid and another is 35 with a history of injuries.

In regards to Dawson, things move on. New mangers have their own ideas. Dawson was a typical Harry player - heart, passion and willingness. AVB, i assume, wants his defenders to play his way. That is probably a high line, good passing and able to bring the ball out from the back - a generally cultured centre half. The problem is, Dawson is not really that, how many times does he get slaughtered on here for 'hoofing the ball', christ, Brad gets it in the neck enough.

Look at Chelsea last season, IMHO Terry was their weakest link in defence mainly due to the fact he struggled to impliment the obvious instructions and style of play AVB had set out. I see man, many similarities between Terry and Dawson - they are both 'blockers', willing to put everything into stopping the shot but they both generally lack position sense, good passing and general footballing ability.

I think too often on this board we get a little bit nostalgic about our 'cult heroes'. Huddlestone is another example, AVB obviously wants his teams to press and generally be mobile across the pitch - Tommy, try as he might, is not that.

Unfortunately, although i think AVB is going to get some flack for getting rid of fan's favourites it is so HE can implement HIS OWN team and not simply manage someone else's. If we get anywhere near £9 for Dawson then fine by me.

I get what you are saying.

I think though that nobody under contract is entitled to leave the club. Footballers are also role models and what Judas and Berbatov did was pretty bricky.

But the scenario with Dawson could help all parties, QPR is a club that is no threat, Dawson would play regularly and we would get a good sum.

I dont think Caulker can be classed as a kid. He played a full year in the PL last year and played well. 4 CBs should be fine

Agree that Gallas' age doesnt make him a long term option but thats something to deal with next summer not this

Dawson isnt going to start and, at 28, is at his peak. His value will only decline from not playing and getting older. Lets say he's worth £3m in 2 years time - would you effectively pay £6m to have him as your 5th choice CB for 2 years?!? I owuldnt - sell daws, sign a kid who can go out on loan and replace Gallas next year

I'm still of the opinion that Matt Jarvis would make a good understudy for the wing/s. Cheaper and possibly more suited to the role than Johnson. Also I'd imagine happier to be understudy. Because that's what we're talking about isn't it? An understudy?
