Summer transfer thread, AvB window wrap up pg 1527

Which player would you like to see take over from Luka Modric?

Agree about positions however, given how we couldnt retain possession on Sat, I would re-order them as:
1) CF
2) Modric replacement
3=) Winger
3=) GK
5) 3rd choice CF (or alternative option alongside Defoe)

Cannot believe we're down to the last 10 days. However at least it might make some people start to appreciate our financial situation

We'll conclude the Modric deal then go and spunk 60m on new players in the last week of the window you wait and see, leaving us all here scratching our heads as to why we didn't get this all sorted months ago. Typical Tottenham/Levy.

Bassong bound for Norwich

Tottenham defender understood to have agreed switch

Last Updated: August 21, 2012 9:14am

Bassong is a long way down the pecking order at White Hart Lane after new manager Andre Villas-Boas strengthened his defensive options with the signing of Jan Vertonghen.

Younes Kaboul, William Gallas, Michael Dawson and Steven Caulker are also fighting for places at centre-back, leaving Bassong surplus to requirements.

Bassong has been with Spurs since 2009, while he spent time out on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.

The Cameroon international had previously made his name in English football at Saudi Sportswashing Machine, where he played under Chris Hughton.

Hughton is now the manager of Norwich and is understood to be keen on a reunion with Bassong.

The Canaries would appear to be in need of reinforcements at the back after being thrashed 5-0 by Fulham on the opening day of the season.

Just out of interest, why do people hate Lampard so much?

I know he played for West Ham, and now plays for Chelski, but he doesn't strike me as particularly dislikeable

I don’t know actually, you are right though. He hasn’t done much wrong really, if anything. Probably a nice guy too, unlike Terry who appears to be just a horrible person.

See I can't agree about the winger replacement after seeing us play without Lennon last season. I know we have a different manager and a different system BUT pace is still very much an important asset to AVB's set up too. Seriously I think we need a new winger purely for my mental stability coz I don't know if I can handle sitting through Lennon or Bale free matches screaming that I bloody told them to buy a new winger as I did from January til the end of the season lol!!

Otherwise I'll be totally honest and say that while I was writing the list I did have an inner argument about he order of the priorities so I think it's fair to say that there's a fine line between them

I would be gutted to see Dawson go. Has qualities that none of the other defenders have for example I think Ba's goal on Sat would have been less likely conceded if Daws was defending as he would have closed Ba down a lot quicker. I'm all for ball playing elegant centre backs but still feel there is room for good old fashioned british bulldog spirit when backs are against the wall. Also think Daws would improve the mid table sides if he went to them.

You would replace Freidel before Gomes? Cant agree with that at all.

While I do agree BF needs replacing, Modric is so essential to our possession game and advancing us into attacking positions I think we would be better served to compromise on GK.

After all, a GK with terrible distribution can be compensated with instruction to just give the ball to a ball playing defender. Gallas, Vertonghen or Ekotto would do just fine as a quick release for him.

I would absolutely replace Friedel before Gomes. For me it's all about the type of player - don't want to turn this into the same old argument but it was a major issue with 'Arry for me. I'd rather have a poor Modric playing Modric's role than a good Parker - it's all about the right type of player in the right positions, rather than just throwing your 11 best players onto the pitch regardless of their strengths.

Gomes is the kind of keeper we need, just not reliable enough for first choice. Friedel is not the type of keeper we need and no matter how good he is at shot stopping, the team will suffer for his lack of distribution. So I'd keep Gomes as the perfect 2nd choice and replace Friedel with a reliable Gomes.

I think if Modric was playing on Sat he'd have been bypassed by the punts to Defoe just as much as Livermore was - if we don't start the possession properly, then there's no point having someone with the ability of Modric as he'll rarely see the ball.

As for instructing Friedel to quick release to the defenders, I'm sure beyond any reasonable doubt that he was instructed to by AVB - there's no way he was told to punt the ball 80 yds to Defoe. Unfortunately, Friedel is neither quick-thinking nor spritely enough to get past seeing the defenders initially tied up so choosing to hit it long. Gallas and Kaboul certainly need to be splitting quicker - Sandro was pretty good at dropping quickly, but there were so many times on Sat where all Friedel needed to do was roll the ball 3yds sideways and he'd have a clear pass to a defender.

Brilliant post - the bolded bit is exceptionally true.

The (apparent) Lloris bid confirms the above to a large extent if anything

Didn't it all start with West Ham fans abusing him for the fact Redknapp and Lampard Sr never dropped him even though he was playing awful week in week out with accusations of nepotism and it's just carried on from there ever since.

Sorry, no idea where Gomes came from, I meant Modric.

Growing reports in Italy that #THFC are considering Roma's Miralem Pjanic as Luka Modric's replacement. €12-14m

If this is true he wont let Dawson leave. Nor should he.
