Students

I went to uni and did a Town Planning BA and Msc.... Waste of time. I did it full time whilst working a 45 hour week for Wetherspoons. It was a piece of ****. Got a job in a local authority and have to work the 9-5 grind. What i should have done was get a trade or a proper skill at 16 like a chippy or a sparky.

I like to think im an intelligent lad and that would have shown through any time. I should have needed a piece of paper and GHod knows how much debt to tell me that.

Uni is over rated when you see some of the dingdongs that come out with the same as you.

Last week i had to prepare 7 x 1500 word planning reports, as well as all the usual work. uni doesnt set you up for that, they give you 4 months for one 1000 word report. Welcome to the real world.

I love university absolutely ****in loved it, made great friends and had an awesome time - best period of my life. I had had alluded to what you have stated around not needing a degree to do the majority of the real working world stuff - although I wouldnt say I didnt need University. I think University definitely taught me some lessons but more as a human being, taking ownership, responsibility and laid the foundations on a skills.

I could have saved thousands by not going uni and going directly into work - if only Employers werent so hell bent on ****in GCSE's, A Levels and Degrees.

It's all about 75 million murdered, total failure when measured against all other real world measures. Socialism, genuine Socialism, which you espouse so wholeheartedly, is an evil, failed ideology. One of you blathers on about "real left wing government". North Korea and Cuba are the only options you are likely to find to your taste. I suggest you experience it first hand. The "fake" left wing Government that this country endured in the recent past destroyed the finances of the nation, and generally wrought havoc. It was also directly responsible, ironically, for the introduction of tuition fees. If either of you are over twenty five years old, I have to admire the persistence of whoever programmed you.

You just proved his point. :ross: Yeah right, a democratic socialist has an affinity with Stalinism! Just how many of those 75 million did the Attlee government kill again? What nonsense.

i went to uni in the 90's, got a degree in politics and to this day, have never come close to using it, i suppose it looks good to have it on a cv but that 3 years was a total waste of taxpayers money, didnt pay any tutition fees, got a full grant so didnt have to work, was off my head every other day, amazed i got a 2 :2 at the end of it. But i would have been better off learning a trade.

While I'm on the same side of the debate as you, and take your general point about the preparation, or lack thereof, that university provides for the world of work, my own experience doesn't quite fit with this. I've just had to complete a 3.5k report for uni from scratch to a 5 week deadline, fitted around a full-time job and a pre-booked holiday.
I can assure you that producing work that I considered close to my best under those conditions was quite challenging!

Hey mate not trying to start an argument but i enjoy the discussion and you said you were a teacher, what do you think with what the head of ofsted has come out and said today. Reading the comments online in the telegraph and the gaurdian i can say im on the telegraph's side. I will not even bother to comment on what he said about the romanians coming in as i would think that is obvious and has been for years.

What is it with teachers hatred of Grammar schools? i do not understand it, we have our son at a private school and is costing more then i would have wanted, really wish we could have got him into a Grammar school. My wife thinks teachers hate them because they take the best students and that lowers the exam results of the state schools where the teachers do not have the skills to improve the others children's education.

I am not totally comfortable on this subject as my own education only went up to 15 when i left school. So i ask purely for your opinion and not because i already have one formed.

In America it is the banks not the state that are responsible for giving out and collecting the loans, maybe that could be answer to the situation that is coming in this country.

I didn't know that all teachers were against it. Yes, research from Finland, a world leader in education has shown that mixing children from different abilities, lifts performance across the spectrum. There is no streaming of abilities there. It is hard to lift performance of struggling students when everyone comes from a low level. Bright students model appropriate study patterns, organisation etc. They also model things like effective public speaking and they share ideas regarding writing strategies etc. As to the teachers in state schools not having the skills to lift the scores of their students. Well have them teaching your child's cohort and his teachers teaching in a state school, and I'd bet the results would be near identical.

Research in Finland lol...... could you have written any more ******** in one paragraph, performance against spectrums, study patterns blah blah blah, this is what Labour did to Education in this country.

Its Education in Reverse...... holding back the bright and hardworking kids to try get the others to apply themselves. I'm not sure any caring parent would want their kids held back in study/life by kids that can't apply themselves/just want to toss it off :-k If kids do struggle at school and they do want to still work hard then they should be taught at a level where they can make progress at their pace. The brighter kids should be allowed to push and excel themselves.

If bet someone did a study about the kids who tossed it off, couldn't be arssed learning and caused trouble at school from 10-20 years ago..... i'd bet most of them are now Labour voters who hate the rich, think they should be entitled to benefits and the world owes them a living types...... Thats more of a fact than the any you'll ever come up with from Finland, i'm sure. ;)

Is it now conservative ideology to reject evidence from the European nation that is commonly accepted to have the best schools in the continent?

If so why ?

Conservative ideology? I'd have said its just ideology of any normal person that wants the best for his children.

I don't know enough about Finland's education system, at a guess i'd say its probably more of a parental thing, they probably invest more time, effort and emotion in their children and from an early age meaning they don't have as many disparate youth in their schools later.

I bet there's more of a link to parents who don't give a **** in this country to children who struggle at school.

That is very true, however no political party can do much about that.

I disagree, i think there's a lot of things that could help improve kids in this countries schooling/parenting:

1. Make parents responsible for their children up to the age of 16, the child does the crime the parent does the time/pays the fine.
2. Make it a part of a persons ability to claim benefits that their children are well behaved, for children that misbehave link a monthly report to the parents benefit claim.
3. Give teachers the right to punish children when they misbehave, it didn't do us any harm did it?
4. Make it a crime for any parent that abuses/threatens or attacks a teacher, fine them/jail them.
5. Get rid of faith schools, teach a religion class by all means but one that covers all religions. Don't teach it as fact, but then neither teach it as fiction, let them make their own minds up.
6. Get rid of miserable or arrogant teachers, every school has them, ones that always seem to be shouting at kids, looking annoyed or walking round like they're on a power trip (p.e. teachers - yes they still do it).... if they aren't in teaching for the enjoyment and wanting to make a difference/help kids then get them the hell out of there
7. Make school fun, make learning fun, broaden and modernise the curriculum, make lessons interesting, kids don't just want to learn about Shakespeare or Keates, let them learn about Irvine Welsh, the poetry of a Lennon, Morrissey or Paul Weller, "Thats Entertainment" said more to me than "I wondered lonely as a ****ing cloud"..... when i was 15

I agree with all of that apart from point 2.

We all base our opinions on personal experiences. Mine is that the vast majority of students are looking for an easy ride. That's based on MY experience of students. This doesn't mean that all students are in fact it means nothing much just like any one else's opinion for that matter! It's only an opinion.

I left school in March of 2001 and in May 2001 I was in work with the company I work for today. The best decision I ever made was throwing myself straight into work opposed to university by a country mile.

Apparently Poland have been the big mover in academic performance in Europe over the last few years, so maybe there is something to be learnt from them. I'm not going to respond to irrational rants from those with an ideological axe to grind. Yeah every ones been to school, so we are all experts. Yeah, right!
