Son Heung-Min

He couldn't score against Honduras? Dear me.

So when does he have to leave to join the army

He has to do his national service before he is 28

id say his value has dropped some what because of it now but hopefully im wrong

How long is the national service?

quick search says it's 21 months for Army, 23 for Navy and 24 for Airforce. I don't know how it's decided which you serve.

I also remember reading you can play for the armys football team during that time so perhaps we could loan him to the armys team for two seasons? Not that I think we'd be keen on that.

Will also be hard for him to choose when to do it. At the moment he's clearly a work in progress and if he was to do it too soon he'd miss some valuable development time. Leave it till he's 28 and chances are that he'll miss his peak.

Either way this will defiantly have a negative impact on his career.

Id say it's fudged up the ceiling of what he could achieve

If it has to be served before he's 28 has not got at an other olympics to win a medal in?

He has the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but also the 2018 Asian Cup - although I'm not sure whether getting to the final is sufficient or whether he might have to win Gold for that to count.
It's a real shame S Korea couldn't get the bronze this time around as this is now hanging over Son for the next couple of years. I think he will need to have a good season now otherwise His value will deteriorate pretty sharply.

I know people have said he still has another chance with the 2020 olympics and i hope that's true. If indeed he has to do it by the age of 28, he'll actually be over 28 by the time the next olympics start.

Also, he signed a 5 year contract, i believe. Which means his contract will run out during his national service and if we extended it then the first couple of years of it he won't be with us.

Difficult situation for both club and player. But i'm sure all parties involved have considered all of this.

Go get that medal, Son!

Ignoring the national service stuff, I assume that given he lost on Sat night, then worst case he'll get a slight on Mon so land on Tues and potentially train on Wed. Should be available for the weekend I would hope

They're allowed a few players over 23 iirc

Only 3 in the squad, and Son was already one of those this time

The Asia Games count the same as the Olympics though. Or Son could apply for dual nationality through residency. Or Kim Jong-un might be overthrown.

Can he only be selected as a +23 in the Olympics once then?
