Son Heung-Min

He's the player that Mido said Spurs should buy as he would become the next Salah isn't he? I don't think I've seen him play before

Perhaps Kane and Dier will put in a good word for us when he plays Bayern next month, or we’ll draw Frankfurt in Europa and he’ll be dazzled by our stadium.

I called this at the start of the season, but I very much doubt Sonny can handle 2 games a week anymore. He just had 6 days rest and came off the bench and looked the freshest I've seen him for a while. Rather than keep selecting him, we need to keep him heavily rotated in the second half of the season.

If that means using Werner to start games, so be it. Perhaps Richi can cover, but I think Ange will be keen to get Solanke some rest time. That will be his main priority.

We need Moore and Odobert back asap or a new face in for the LWF. We are in such a dire position there. Maybe thats where the links to Kolo Muani come from.

I don't even think buying another player would be overloading the area because Werner should not be coming back next season and with Moore and Odobert so young an older more mature player (who is actually effective so no Werner) could be useful.

Going into next season the wide options should probably at least look like Odobert and Moore for the left initially (maybe with a mature starter option) and then a starter quality player on the right and Johnson for depth.
The way Ange managed Son earlier this season I think was the plan going into the season.

We essentially went into the season a bit overloaded on the left. Son, Werner, Odobert and then Moore hoping to break through and Richarlison.

Unfortunately Richarlison, Odobert and Moore have been out for extended periods and at the same time. While Werner looks so short on conference he's not making himself a real option.

Depending on how Ange sees Moore and Odobert with regards to their suitability on the left vs the right and in terms of their development and readiness for first team football the right wing may be more of a priority than the left. Ideally someone that can play on either side.

We really need to limit Son's minutes imo.

SONNY'S CONTRACT EXTENDED

Tue 07 January 2025, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.
Having joined the Club in August, 2015, Sonny, 32, has become a global star during his time with us and a modern-day great for Tottenham Hotspur.
Since joining from Bayer Leverkusen almost a decade ago, our number seven has gone from strength to strength in Lilywhite, making 431 appearances – seeing him to 11th in our all-time appearances list – and scoring 169 goals – the fourth most in the Club’s history.
Named Club captain in August, 2023, the South Korea international has certainly cemented himself in our history, scoring a number of iconic goals on landmark occasions for the Club.
Scoring his first goals in our colours back in September, 2015, in a Europa League clash with Qarabag on his White Hart Lane debut, Sonny scored the first-ever goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, coming against Crystal Palace in April, 2019, before he followed up with the first-ever Champions League goal at our world-class home the following week, striking against Emirates Marketing Project.
Part of our squad which reached the UEFA Champions League Final for the first time in 2019, in the following December he stunned the world with an incredible solo strike against Burnley as he carried the ball more than 80 yards before slotting home in front of the South Stand. A year later, that goal claimed the FIFA Puskas award making Sonny the first-ever Asian player to take the iconic prize.
In 2021/22, he enjoyed his best goalscoring season to date as he won the Premier League’s Golden Boot with his 23 goals helping us to return to the Champions League.
Now into the Premier League’s top 20 goalscorers of all time with 125 goals to his name – the second-highest return of any Spurs player, this season he broke the Club’s long-standing assist record in the Premier League with his 68th coming in December’s 5-0 win over Southampton.
Captain of his nation, he has made 131 appearances for South Korea to date, finding the net 51 times and has featured for his country at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
Voted AFC Asian International Player of the Year on a record four occasions, he won gold at the 2018 Asian Games while he reached the Asian Cup Final with Korea in 2015.

I think that makes sense with the Odobert and Moore situation.

Its also probably sensible to have an old pro around as, unless we do the same with Davies, he'll be our only player over 28 next season.

Hmmmm - feels like now is the right time to go our seperate ways, wonder if the idea is to have some leverage wrt to player exchanges or transfer deals this summer?
I think it means we are going to spend all our year's attacking budget on a RW, and we're going to stick with LW as it is (minus Werner) for the next 18 months.

Makes sense to me.

We didn't tear up the current agreement and offer him a payrise and longer contract. That would have been daft in my opinion.

We now get to either keep him and let him run down his contract over 18 months OR use his value to raise the transfer kitty in the summer.

Right decision....for now.

I think he's worth keeping for another year, with a bit more rest he can still perform well. Can't remember who it was but someone in another thread broke down how much experience we lost last summer, important to retain some and he'll likely leave on a free in 2026. I'd still back him to get 10-15 league goals a season.

The contract was always going to be extended, despite Son not being as influential on the pitch as he has been. Key words in that press release is "global star". Marketing wise he's invaluable for us. We don't really have any other "star" players, TBF.

Hope we get some players back fit so he doesn't have to start every game.

Still a very useful player in him, but tired Son is a painful watch knowing how good he one was.

Definitely, I feel even at his peak he was always a bit streaky. Go on a great 2 month run then wouldn't score for a month etc.

He will still have the option to go in summer, but we would likely get a fee as result of the contract extension.

From his perspective, if he gets a decent European offer (don't think there is a step up in EPL option for him now), the fee will likely still be doable, if not, he's got another year with us, probably with a real plan to transition away from dependence on him every game.

i don;t think we are going to win anything next season so it is unfortunate for son
maybe make him a fitness and attacking coach with his father alongside.
