Son Heung-Min

It's an interesting point. If you try and win the ball with your feet, mistime it and catch the opposition player, there's a reasonable chance it's a red card these days on a VAR slow-mo.

Miss a header and stick your shoulder through someone's head? Not sure it was even given as a foul was it?

Anyway, get well soon Sonny. Hope it's not done him for the World Cup, even if that would help us.
Nope.

Exclusive: Son Heung-min suffered four separate fractures to eye socket

Son will not know whether his World Cup hopes are over until after surgery

Son Heung-min suffered four fractures to his eye socket, with surgery to save his World Cup brought forward to Friday.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward was originally scheduled for his operation over the weekend but the procedure has been moved, giving him an extra day to recover ahead of South Korea’s opening match of the tournament on Nov 24 against Uruguay.

Son, 30, will not know whether he will be ruled out of the tournament until after going under the knife but there is hope that he will play some part in Qatar if surgery reveals no major damage following the injury suffered in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Marseille in the Champions League.

In the first half of the victory he collided horribly with the shoulder of opposition defender Chancel Mbemba and was visibly unsteady on his feet and required the help of a physio to walk down the tunnel.

While he was later well enough to join the Spurs celebrations in the dressing room, it was later revealed he would need surgery and has added to the list of Premier League players in doubt for the World Cup following injury during the packed schedule to accommodate the mid-season tournament,

Spurs have not yet put a timeframe on the forward’s expected return to action but, with the World Cup looming in just a few weeks, his participation is now in question. Son’s team also face Ghana and Portugal in Group H.

Son is almost certain to miss the remaining three matches before players depart for the Gulf State. Spurs face Liverpool this weekend in the Premier League and Leeds United just before the mid-season break, with an EFL Cup tie at Nottingham Forest in between.

He could take encouragement from Kevin De Bruyne’s recovery from a similar injury last year. De Bruyne suffered fractures to his nose and left eye socket during the Champions League final in May 2021, and underwent minor surgery. He played for Belgium at the European Championships less than three weeks later.

Really gutted for him, however, as said in the article, he may yet find out that he makes the world cup.
I kind of, sort of hope he doesn't, firstly as I think all players should stay home this time, and secondly, it would probably be good for him to get a proper break and fresh start.

Since I know that most players really really want to play, no matter what, I guess they will all go.

On a side note, there is a very special ante-chamber in Hell reserved for macarons who boo injured players, particularly when there's a head injury involved. Said chamber involves turpentine, razorblades, loud accordion music and morris-dancers, and to top it off, some french poetry read out aloud. To be suffered for eternity.

Here's the thing about players missing the WC through injury. Some of them could have a negative psychological reaction to not taking part in the tournament. So while some supporters might think it's better for there team, it might not be.

I obviously dont know but I get the feeling Son is extremely proud to be captain of his national team and believe he will be very disappointed to miss what could be his last chance to play in the World Cup Finals.

he's only 30, very likely he'll still be their best player in 4 years time

He played in 2018 and 2014 though, so it's not quite a once in a lifetime thing

No it's not but I feel it's more important to him than getting a different haircut or going to a Little Mix show like so many England players.

Equally he might feel under duress to go to a country where homosexuality is illegal, if he has strong morals and considering his best mate is a queer actor (Park Seo Joon).

Gutted for him. Hope he makes the World Cup. Against Man U, me and some other posters gave him stick for backing out of a header that led to their first goal. I guess this sort of thing is the reason he and other players are having doubts about risking a 50:50.

Have to weigh my initial selfishness (for Spurs) that his injury would give him an enforced and much-needed month's rest against the psychological impact of missing out on proudly leading his nation into the World Cup.

Left out, he'd have time to fully heal yet train and keep his fitness level up. We'd have him fresh and ready, maybe even a little more determined to resume scoring at his normal pace.

Go to the cup, overcome the discomfort and lead his team into the knockout rounds and we might see him back halfway through with his attitude and club ambitions bolstered and the benefit of a couple of weeks to recover and prepare.

Worst case is he takes an aggravating blow to the injured area and is out for a prolonged period with negative effects on his mental outlook. Gotta hope Bentancur gets his Uruguayan team mates to lay off the heavy manners they're renowned for in South Korea's first game.

An upside to that final point; with weasely Portugal in that tough group, there's a decent chance either Son or Bentancur comes home after the first round.

I saw something earlier that he might be back with a protective mask for Leeds next week! Sounds a bit optimistic though doesn't it. Apparently its normally a 5-6 week recovery time

He looks really odd in specs and Burberry. A sort of 'Oriental-Chav-Michael McIntyre' hybrid.
