To my mind greed is the one quality any striker worth his wage packet must have. You don't become a top striker without it.

When Kane shoots wide from outside the box he's 'greedy,' when he scores, he's great. As Kane himself would put it, it's one of them. :D

You cannot have it both ways.

Agreed. And it's often about quick decisions in tight spaces. Having your mindset focused on finding the shot and taking it can be of great help in situations where there isn't time to evaluate options or looking around for other players.

As a result there will be situations where the better option isn't taken, but there will also be shots and goals.

Lamela to me unfortunately falls on the other end of that spectrum. Taking too long to look for the perfect option when the good obvious option would do. Not as much in shooting positions, but I think the point generalises.

But that is not what I call greed. Well, it might be, but I call that taking an opportunity. If you take a shot outside the box, it's often because there are few other options, not about making a fair chance better. Or you just see an opening, in which case I say shoot away. And you may not be a striker for the books if you're unselfish, but the team's better off for it in my view.

To illustrate what I'm talking about, how many times haven't you seen Son or Kane shoot in this situation - often on the left side - with the other one in the box? If we're 4-0 up, by all means fire away for what I care. Some may think otherwise, but I think this is THE right option and a better goal than if he had shot and scored.

There's greed which is a good trait for a striker but there's also intelligence which is even more important for any player no matter their position. Sometimes (fairly often in fact) passing to a team mate is the best option, and sometimes taking the shot on yourself is for the best. The great teams, the ones that win things are filled with players who best combine those two attributes. Greed alone won't do it.

I'm not sure Lamela looks for the perfect option. I think it's more that he always plays the less obvious option.

Sometimes that means it's not the right choice, but it almost always means the defenders don't expect it.

Agree 100%. Do not confuse greed with willingness to take a chance. You certainly won't have a striker afraid to shoot, that's not the issue at all. Greed for me is that you have decided to shoot receiving the ball in an *unfavourable* position, not even raising your head or trying to assess the situation. At certain times you could wonder why teammates even bothered to make runs into the box. And sometimes they didn't.

Ünder over (no pun intended) waived the possibility of scoring his first goal for the club, becoming the immediate township hero, booze and women and glorious headlines in the Daily Leicester Herald. Instead he chose to win the game.

Edit: i wrote one hundred percent, but the board decided that it didn't describe enough how much I agreed.

I think sometimes he just doesn't know what to do, sometimes he doesn't think and sometimes he does like you say try something unexpected. It rarely works though. [emoji28]

But we love him anyway! In the most manly way possible, of course.

I disagree that opportunmities to pass to a better placed team mate happens 'fairly often.' Far more likely the defence is too crowded and an attempted pass gets intercepted / deflected / goes astray. And even if the pass does get through, how often is it that a defender appears from nowhere to smother the shot? Also there's the question of the recipient. There's a reason why non-strikers convert fewer chances.

True, Kane and Son have been combining brilliantly recently but even then, situations where the pass is on will usually happen only after the defence has already been totally shredded. Most of Kane's recent assists have been from deep, when he would not normally choose to shoot anyway.

But leaving all that aside I was mainly referring to strikers who will take a pot shot from outside the box when few other options are available. Rather than pass sideways or backwards yet again I'm always happy for Kane to be selfish and have a pop if he can work the space. Even if he's off target it might still take a deflection. :D

A bit tangential, but yesterday's Big Match Revisited had Spurs v Saudi Sportswashing Machine from 1974. Cyril Knowles scored two goals, but there was no singing of his song - he was also the studio guest. If you can find an ITV4 iplayer ...

A pity the stadium SFX nowadays don't include best player chants, only team ones.

I like catching up on those games as I missed most of our Saturday games from the mid60s till the mid 80s. Great to see even the bald blokes had long hair back then. That game was from the period we went into decline.

Had one of his frustrating games today and looked well off the pace, but even when he does this he is still a major player as the opposition are still wary of him.

he looked totally tinkled off

You're projecting Stephen. He just wasn't very good but time and again he did bust a nut to track back. Thought he did well off the ball but was dreadful on it.

As someone else said, Son seems to be a very streaky player. Let's hope this isn't the beginning of one of his bad streaks.

Possibly I thought today and Thursday were at Jose door!
