Son Heung-Min

It does seem to me that this season especially, that Kane is dropping deeper and as we have a faster / more direct build up and counter attackig style this suits Son being fed a through ball, with Kane coming back into play as the 9 when the build up is naturally slower or being involved in the second phase of the attack. Give the players some credit too, Kane has a fantastic football intelligence, he’d probably be our best centre back if he played there too!
Edit: also the absence of Dele may have been part of the strategy that gives Kane the space to drop into, so by combing his role as a 10 it makes Dele a luxury that has been replaced with a deeper midfielder?

Agree with all that especially the bolded bit, as i have said elsewhere i do struggle to see just where Alli would fit into our side going forward. I am sure he will play games but will he be satisfied not being a regular (and i do not see how that can happen at the moment) .

It's obvious that Kane has been instructed to provide earlier assists to Son. And Son asked to use his pace directly towards goal.
We are happier letting the opposition pass away meaninglessly too.
All Mourinho I surmise.

Hojbjergs passing stats are crazy when you compare them
18% better than his nearest midfield
Not to take anything away from Hojbjerg, he's been excellent all round, but as a measure of performance I don't quite get the value of passing stats. Weve all seen players pass it across the back over and over. Okay it serves a purpose but it's also a nice easy way to get your stats up.

I agree but that’s not what he is doing
He does pass safe at times but also is making key attacking passes too

His passing isn't better because of the sheer number it's better because of their intent and incision. It's the difference between Winks/Sissoko in the role and Hojberg. They will dally and play sideways or wait so long that the forward pass has lost all incision, Hojberg will try and play it early and get us moving quickly. Sometimes it won't work but I'm more than willing for him to try.

I would bloody well hope so, as this is his primary weapon and to be fair the only thing, but then again really is world class at. I want (and have to an extent gotten) what Leicester did the other night, where the attacker lobbed the ball to Vardy for an easy goal instead of shooting. They turned a 50% chance into a 98% chance purely by unselfishness. Spurs were set up for Kane like this pre-Son (who would've definitely taken the shot), which is why I was concerned if they really could play together back then. And a reason I can never consider the likes of Defoe legends or even remember them fondly. I don't like players who's apparent desire to score is higher than their desire to win. If Son & Kane had learned to pass to each other earlier, we would have won the league every year.

Greaves was rubbish then. Not a legend as he was too greedy. Same with Big Chiv.

Diff'rent times. And I don't remember them, even less seen them play.

Edit: And if I'd seen them play and fire haphazard shots with teammates indefinately better placed, no I probably wouldn't. To me they're considered legends because of their numbers and what they've achieved - and people tell me so, not because I have any reason to believe or assess otherwise. And again, point being that I would guess the teams were set up for them, like we were for Kane. We are not anymore, hence Kane plays much deeper.

I never saw greaves play but i know he’s a legend. And Defoe last played for us in 2014. Different times. And we were, at times, set up to play to his strengths. And part of being considered a legend is a player’s attitude and bind with the fans.

Agree. Hojbjerg has been very good bar the first game and is always very busy on the pitch so I think he's more than just a "get it and knock it safe" merchant but the stat itself tells us nothing. Look at the rest of the top 10. Everton's two centre backs are in the top 10 so it tells me nothing about how good a midfielder Hojbjerg is.

We were? Genuine question. Was he the primary focus of our attack? Did he even play alone up top? I seem to remember a stint where the plan was for Crouch to be a target man for Defoe, but the ball - no exaggeration - more often ended up with an opponent than not. To me he had tunnel vision and usually shot without even raising his head looking around him. Which is why, in my opinion and as I recall, he was rubbish at one-on-ones but good on instinct. Another one is Andy Cole. He has impressive numbers, but everytime I saw him he squandered 10 good chances for every goal, that with arguably one of history's most creative and unselfish midfield behind him. If you shoot at absolutely everything, you will eventually score. And I'm not saying Defoe wasn't a skilled forward, that has never been the issue. You pass the ball rather than being a hero, unless you're looking for an improved contract or whatever. And if it wasn't clear, I'm not talking about forwards who either is the sole focus (Kane) or simply HAD to take matters in their own hands/feet (Bale under AvB). I won't bother discussing Greaves and players of his era regarding their greediness or not. I'm talking about player's I've seen and how I regard them. And I certainly don't give "attitude and bind with the fans" the same weight it in my legend book, to me that's a different cathegory of legends, type Freund. And Edinburgh.

To me, football is a team game best appreciated when shots are taken when there are no obviously in your face better options available, because that's what wins you most games in the long run. No dig in any shape or fashion, but this may be the one instance where it's clearer on TV than from (parts of) the stands.
