Politics, politics, politics

Does anyone actually want Brexit anymore?

We need a vote on here. And I can't see how the country could go forward without a vote too, once we know what Brexit actually means.

I still do.

I want us to be free to trade with who we wish. I want to be able to vote out the people that make the laws I love by if i disagree with how the government of the day are behaving.

I do not want to be part of a European army, I would rather we retained our independence. I want his to control our farming and fishing industries.

Most of all I want us to be an outward forward looking nation who trades with the world. A nation that is part of NATO & the G8 and has input into the discussions on the world's problems. I would like us not to be a nation afraid to stand on its own feet and do whatever the elite think we should.

I was for Brexit, and will probably always remain so

I know we come from different ends of the political spectrum but that only proves my point even now about Brexit and what a good thing it is.

Some people think Brexit is some right wing Tory thing, it is not.

If the Tories go to far to the right some other party will get in, but crucially that will be a party that can make all the laws that govern us. The liberals became popular in the early 90's and we had a Labour government for 13 years.

If the Tories get rid of workers tights etc they will be out of government.

The is nothing to fear of independence, just a bunch of snowflakes and BBC workers getting their knickers in a twist.

Genuine question; when was the last general election that had such a high turnout in terms of percentage of eligible voters? At the time we were given the impression that voter turnout in the referendum was very high..

General Election turnout

Year UK
England
2015 66.1% 65.8%
2010 65.1% 65.5%
2005 61.4% 61.3%
2001 59.4% 59.2%

Apathetic/uninformed people generally vote for the status quo.

90% of remainers were probably 'soft remainers', while only 10% live in Islington and read the Guardian.

I'm still yet to meet one British person who positively likes the EU (rather than tolerates it).

Also the people who don't know probably don't vote - though many do even when they don't fully understand - and who can when Brexit details are tbc! Doesn't mean these people shouldn't be represented.

About 52% of people who voted. Only a third of the population. The other two-thirds probably not so into it. And of that third who did vote to leave, what percentage would abstain now, knowing what they know?

Which laws do you love? There is a great one that declares a policeman has to allow a women to pee in his hat if she's pregnant. But the EU hasn't had any effect on that.

If Russia goes bonkers, who will defend Europe? On our own two feet we are nothing vs Russia. Btw we don't have an EU army, its just an idea.

Trading is the heart of the EU it is a Customs Union. The elite, never thought we should leave the EU. Most MPs, most business leaders. There just a few crack pot public shcool boy educated twots who think Britain is still some kind of colonial power.

I don't think we've met, but I love being able to jump on a plane to Europe. The freedom to go anywhere in the EU, work with people from anywhere in the EU are all fantastic. I like that there is someone sorting all the complex international laws for our government. Sorting trade agreements, and boring laws to allow free trade across the worlds largest trading block.

I like what the EU represents - a reaction to the most bloody of wars - a coming together of a continent. While there are progressive countries in other parts of the world - on things like peoples rights, development of arts, culture - Europe is without doubt a leader. Maybe Australia comes close, but otherwise where else in the world are there the ethics and development of culture as strong as in Europe?

I also like the affect EU trade has had on the UK since the 1970s. We're in a far far better place. The access point to the EU for much of the world. It boosts our economy no end. Screw all the patriotic gonads about Sovereignty. It's hyperbole which can't really be defined, a way to get the masses to engage in what is a public school boy fantasy.

thats a niche policy just for you

I am on my phone and it spelt love when I wrote live. bloody phone's.

The is a new elite, they control the media BBC they are the heads of public bodies worried they were not going to get grants from the EU grants that were far less then we paid in.

As for Russia as long as we have a nuclear deterrent we will be fine, as mad as Putin might be he won't hit us if we can hit back.

Why you so scared of people elected by the British public making our laws? why are you so fearefull of the rest of the world. I am not accusing you of this next thing but the is a hint of racism amongst remainers as if European countries are somehow superior.

I find it sad.

Agree. The EU is an inward-looking stagnant regional trading block. It was tariffs/regulations that actively discourage trading with the rest of the world. Like Ireland were recently in trouble with the EU because they are trying to be more competitive than they are allowed to be in their deal with Apple.

Breaking free of all the tariffs will allow us to be more dynamic and global - like say South Korea.

Also the EU is all developed countries - trading services between each other. The best trading relationships are built on difference. As a developed country we'd be much better offering our services and advanced manufacturing to countries in exchange for something different - i.e. raw materials and basic manufacturing. Building relationships with the BRIC countries instead.

We've won the right to make our own mistakes again, and that's really important.

The European Commission was a long way from meeting Tony Benn's 5 questions for rulers:

1) WHAT POWER HAVE YOU GOT?
2) WHERE DID YOU GET IT FROM?
3) IN WHOSE INTERESTS DO YOU EXERCISE IT?
4) TO WHOM ARE YOU ACCOUNTABLE?
5) HOW CAN WE GET RID OF YOU?

2 = creeping power grabs, 4 = no one, 5 = you can't

UK governments generally do meet the five

Can you not go and work with people from other civilised parts of the world? I've never had a problem going to any country (other than Russia). You can get an Esta visa for America online in about 30 seconds.

The EU's intentions in 1945 were very different to now. A loose alliance of multinational cooperation and trade is absolutely fine. I hope something like that replaces the EU when it collapses in a few years. But now it’s changed beyond recognition and is a self-severing megalomaniac empire which needs to be overthrown.

Cultural and economic exchange is to be lauded. It's the growing political machinations of the Commission's priesthood (since 1992) that really overstepped the line and is highly sinister. It's like the Catholic church's reach pre-Reformation.

Is that new? Maybe they are simply worried because its a dumb thing to do?

The British public have never made laws, pre EU, and they won't post EU. The whole laws things is a misnomer. There really isn't a lot of significance to the man in the street, aprart from some kind of teary-eyed notion of sovereignty. Control. Which is gonads because people won't have control, they never do. And thank goodness they don't, why do we think people should be experts in the law!?

Why is being part of a Union = to being fearful of the world? Are EU countries not 'foreign' enough for you? The Eu does not preclude interactions with non-EU countries.

Scara the EU is 2 hours away from from central London. US and Russia at least 10 with airport travel, check in etc. Most of our trade is with our close neighbors etc as you'd expect. I'd love to interact with these countries too, but visas are an issue, as are less banking protocols as well as trading prototcols which slow down interactions and economic transactions. Even if you forget the time and geographic barriers, these things like banks working cross border and visas take time to open up, and won't happen overnight, if at all.

Is 40% most? And that includes the Rotterdam effect (good for the rest of the world going first through the port of Rotterdam). 60% and growing of our trade is with the rest of the world.
