Politics, politics, politics

I also support a sensible mixed economy. Tories loved privatisation in the past because it helped gild the Lilly in terms of their economic management. They sold off billions of pounds worth of service and industry which all went to their economic bottom line and the so called 'economic miracle.' Of course you can only sell off state assets once and the revenue is soon frittered away. Also state income from those revenue streams is lost too. Of course rolls Royce should stay in private hands, as the government has no legitimate roll in car manufacturing, but all utilities, public transport, health, education, police etc should remain under government control.

Do they have the 'workers representative' on the boards of German companies, Scara? I might be wrong, I thought I read that somewhere. I don't think it's a bad idea to have a proper link between those at the bottom and those at the top of a company, especially big companies where the top are quite disconnected from the average worker.

They do, in Japan too . Workers representatives at boardroom level is not laying the grounds for a future communist revolution .

Chich, you have previously stated your support for the NHS and the re-nationalisation of the railways, these are incompatible with support for small government.

I do certainly support the railways being re-nationalised. the NHS I think needs to change massively and the way so many doctors and nurses seem to have such a left wing tilt I do not think that will ever happen. I would actually like to see the NHS privatized and the BBC sold off personally.

Governments are to interfering will people's lifes in so many different aspects, one of my reasons for voting out of the EU, we have local councillors, MP's, European Councillors, the House of Lords etc it is to many levels and to much stifling business, I have always been about Business and I did well and earnt money when the was growth. I like money so where things can be done better by private business then it should.

The railways are complicated and in my view an exception to the rule. We have the busiest railway system in Europe, we are a small country with massive passenger numbers, instead of selling up to foreign companies that subsidise fees in their own countries we should use the profits from the railways to reinvest. It is the one industry I can think of off the top of my head that has not done better through privatization.

Worth noting that while we played by the rule and allowed under EU law other countries companies to bid for our railway franchise the same courtesy was not extended to us, but of course the remainers would tell you we could change the EU from the inside, both the French and Germans stopped us from bidding for their energy companies.

saw this and thought it worth posting. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business...s-love-affair-with-euro-apologises-for-the-i/

They might.

Not really sure what "the workers" would know about strategic level decision making and planning. It's the kind of thing everyone thinks they can do but not many can.

How many dr. Do you know. Most I know are traditionalists, liberals and largely tory (pre hunt at least)

They wouldn't, but why would you waste their time listening to (or worse, give voting rights to) those who aren't?

Hi @scaramanga.
I think you may be underestimating the value and knowledge of "workers"
"workers" could be top level tech people with deep insight into the workings of a company, department heads who are on the ground, and know what is actualling happening.
The usual directors could be fat cows with NO knowledge of what is going on -the usual members of the old boys club.

And any well-run company would have those people submitting reports for discussion at board meetings. We often invite people in to expand on that information and offer their expertise.

That's very different to giving those people presence at board level though. In fact, those with a high level of expert knowledge tend to be poor at strategic decision making in my experience due to their focus needing to be narrow.

That's a cliche that's very rare in reality. Knowing the right people may get you onto some boards (also rare), but it won't keep your there or teach you how to cope with the pressure.

The vast majority of directors I've had dealings with are there with very good reason - not to mention the NEDs that most boards have to offer guidance.

And i wait with baited breath to see which board flip flop Dave ( now he has done a runner from politics)gets for services to a company.

Nah, never going to happen, just ask Scara 'cause according to him, there is no establishment in Britain. He, he. :)
It wouldn't be a favour giving him a job because he's one of the most qualified people to sit on a board in the country.

He's just spent the last few years running a country in charge of one of the most dysfunctional boards (the cabinet) one could see.

I have to admire the consistency of Vote Leave .

Matthew Elliot, Chief Executive of Vote Leave - "there has never been a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic"

Cretinous.
