Politics, politics, politics

I've worked with MPs from both sides of the fence in the South and the Midlands and they've been nothing but genuine people who want to help their constituents.

That was generally my experience working with local MP's when I was in telly land. However, have you worked with any of the 'top-level' guys?

No, junior ministers and below.

That said, I've had a few brief dealings with Andrew Tyrie who has made himself fairly important outside the traditional structure. He is a very impressive man indeed. Have you ever met someone who, no matter how good you are or what you've achieved in life, is so on top of everything that you feel like a chancer? That's him. I thought I was organised, well briefed, perceptive, etc until I met him and he showed me how far I have to go still.

He sounds great, I'll check him out! I had the same feeling with Simon Hughes of the Lib Dems (this was pre him becoming deputy leader I think). We interviewed him at Portcullis House, he said he could only give us 10 minutes max. We were in there for just close to 2 1/2 hours, as he was so passionate about the work he was doing at the time. It was fascinating and I felt privileged to have been in the room with him. So much desire and drive to do positive things.

The reason I asked about the 'top level' guys, is that in purely my experience, the higher up the chain you get, the more smarmy, self-serving, arrogant they become. Everything is PR and you really get the sense that they have zero interest in us plebs. Very charismatic and engaging mind, which I guess is a large part of the job.

@scaramanga Just had a quick read up on Tyrie, very impressive. 'He has been described as the most powerful backbencher in the House of Commons'. I also like that he has rubbed up Call Me Dave the wrong way on multiple occasions!

edit: seems to have done some good things for Chichester as well.

I quite enjoyed the PMs stand up routi...I mean Questions highlights today.

Theresa May is running the show. Well she can't do any worse than her predecessors surely??

Lets hope so, listening to her talk outside num 10 today it seems she think the country is in a mess and unfair to the majority of the people.( no surprise there though).

They all talk a good game though don't they? Will reserve judgement for a year or two.

It's called triangulation, Bill Clinton and Blair's tactic of occupying your opponent's traditional strong ground. Remember Blair's "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" conference line? She's doing exactly the same here. A smart move with Labour infighting and in pieces.
