That might be a bit much - you have to allow voters to choose. It should trigger a by-election certainly. And probably come with a ban (lengthy, maybe permanent) from holding any serious office.Bang up for that
Also anyone caught breaking ministerial codes, thats it you are gone, go be a postman, you are done..............

That's also pay related though.I think ethics is the largest stumbling block to decent politics these days, to many either slipping the net or not being dealt with in a fashion that clearly puts off dodgy dealings in the future.

MPs get paid a pittance and can lose their job overnight. They have to have somewhere to land.
The job may pay a pittance, not sure I agree but that's a discussion for another time, but there's no way the majority of the MPs could pick up or hold onto a job with a salary like that in the real world. That's also pay related though.

Talking of manifestos.
One of the simplest and greatest improvements to our political system would be to automatically trigger an election if manifesto promises are broken.
Then don't make promises that they can't keep.I think that would be silly.
We get another pandemic, or an official war, and it would throw the country into chaos.
Then don't make promises that they can't keep.
It's not what they do that's the issue, it's what they promise to a gullible electorate.
Surely if the landscape changes significantly, then an election wouldn't be out of order. The entire economic foundation could change for reasons outside the government’s control.
To trigger an election on something like number of teachers hired or new houses built would be churlish.

Imagine if Labour had won the election in 2008. We'd currently be asking Argentina for handouts.
Student Unions up and down the land are saying 'hear hear!'So agree a cross-party consensus on taxing the 450 people who own half the country's wealth?

The most competent party during a boom would be something like Blair's late 90s party. NBut that party could never govern during a financial crisis. It’s upheaval right when you need stability.
The electorate is supposed to vote for the most competent party.
Good. That's precisely what I want. I only want parties to promise the things they will actually do.It would just lead to even woolier documents. "We will endeavour to move in the direction of phasing out fossil fuels". "Our ambition will be to increase the proportion of health expenditure direct towards social prescribing" etc.
Maybe I am wrong but couldn't that cause elections to be called everytime Labor & conservatives have a disagreement. If it was based on what the eletroate want who decides when it's reached a tipping point to call an election.Electoral stability of fptp is probably taken for granted by some. Weak governance is a given under itjer system. If we want to be able to trigger general elections it should be due to lack of democratic consensus. We need reform on the system of voting. Rather than have elections due to promise break.
