Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

If anything has been made clear since Oct 7th, it's that a 2 state solution will never be possible.

No it has been clear since the Israeli government ran on a manifesto for River to the sea and one state for Israel. 2 state solution has never been embraced by Hamas or Zionists.

Have you been to Ireland or Australia?

Outside of the cities I'd describe both as empty too.

Israel was recognised as a state in 1948 (but I'm sure you knew that), Palestine self-declared as (but still isn't) one in 1988.
Palestine has not been recognised as a state due to the west not allowing it.

So your concept of 'democracy' is basically Hobson's choice - vote for the oppressor or face eviction?

Wow.

And you can't destroy an ideological system with bombs. It isn't about having the stomach for it, bombing and shooting were never going to completely destroy Hamas. Plenty of wiser people than you or I were clear that all that Israel would achieve is putting a lid on it for a short while but in the medium and long-term radicalise a whole new cohort in the next generations.

Question - in your mind what is the legal status of Gaza and the West Bank? Who does it belong to?

Posted it after the Hamas attacks, but need to post it again. We need more Martin Luther Kings in this world:

Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love... Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and understanding.[7]
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy, instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

This is just not true. The people of Palestine were occupied in 1922 but had homes and land. You are straight lying.
Of course some people were, you can't just leave the odd dwelling here and there and circle a country's boundary around it.

But many of the people there were nomadic and so that area was never their home, just a place they travelled to and through. With all the advancements brought to the area by Israel, there's no longer a need to be nomadic.

That doesn't mean at one point it wasn't possible. There was a small window during discussions with the PLO, before Hamas took over, when it even seemed probable.

But Hamas are there to stay and, as you say, they won't allow a 2 state solution so we need to find an alternative.

It is if people open their minds and get to a point (which we did with Northern Ireland) that compromise is better than having a load of people die every year.....
You mean if the side with no need to give up anything gives up everything to the terrorists, we can have peace?

I'd like to think the Israelis have learned from our mistakes.

The issue is that Palestinians are seen as less by Israel supporters. Not people to them.

When genetically and geographically the two people could not be closer. That a lot of Israelis hate this connection, they view Palestinians as ‘other’ and somehow less than them is one root of the problem.

If you look at hunter gatherer societies, in the jungles of Borneo (anywhere) tribes normally have an enemy over the next hill. As we know we’re no different to gooners ostensibly, apart from their lack of class. 😂

You do understand that some people want to be nomadic? That it works for how they want to live? And seasonal migrations doesn't not make it their 'home'.

But the vast majority of Palestinains do support a 2 state solution so you work on that and side-line ('eliminate') Hamas.

Failing that a one state solution with equal demographic rights for all citizens would be fair, right? Or only after the Palestinians are cleared out of the way??

In any other level of occupation (such as social work, care work, etc..) there’s certain standards that have to be maintained

If someone was offered a role suspected of what they are. If there was an element of doubt.. they would not be allowed to police

Obviously false allegations happen… but they are so, so rare.

If any officer has has repeated allegations made I want them gone.
Even if there innocent?

Even if there innocent?

IF the police were about to offer someone a job today and saw that person had accusations against their name they would not be hired.

Innocence would not matter. Any kind of caution would set alarm bells ringing.

For any job private companies will likely be searching your social media profiles before hiring you.

Anything unsavoury is fair grounds for them to withdraw a job offer - or not offer one.

Yeah sure if the is an outstanding allegation but what if the were allegations that had been disproven. It seems like to be going against the presumption of innocent till proven guilty.

I'm just an old man who does not understand the world.

So would you allow someone to teach your child who had a pending accusation? No.

I can't fathom why the standards would be different for police.

No, I couldn't possibly understand that wish - it's ridiculous.

But anyway, nobody is stopping them from travelling through Israel.

The court case didn't relate to a pending accusation. It related to whether the Met were legally able to withdraw vetting clearance of an officer due to two accusations of *struggle cuddle* that had been fully investigated and in both cases the investigation conclusion was "no case to answer". The Met were asked by the court if there was any evidence not subject of the original investigations that would lend any weight to the accusations. They couldn't offer any. The court found (unsurprisingly) that their decision to withdraw vetting clearance of the officer was unlawful.
