Paulinho

It might not be much of a difference, but apart from Chiriches they're all improvements. Defoe and Huddlestone were nowhere near the players they were in their prime when they left.

has Soldado proven to be better than Defoe? no
has paulinho proven to be better than Huddlestone? no
has Capoue proven to be better than Parker ? no

hell Lamela hasn't proven to be better than Siggy in the league so far tbh.

Who would I rather have in the team? The former ones all the way. Defoe is past it, Hudd is only good when he can sit deep and hit long passes and is slower than Capoue, Parker is more past it than Defoe and Siggy just isn't nearly as good as fond memories might suggest.

Even if you believe these players are better, for the money that has been spent, there should be a major improvement on the players that have been replaced (except for Bale). It shouldn't be that we spend £25m on a striker who is marginally better than a past his prime Defoe, or the same on a midfielder who is a bit better than a past his prime Huddlestone.

Not only that, but these signings have actually been out-performed by youth players who cost us nothing (Soldado see Kane, Paulinho see Mason). And that's not because the level of our youth players has been that outstanding, but rather the performance of the imports so very average.

Capoue is better than the Parker that left IMV

I don't agree at all.

Parker was positionally better even in his last season. People got annoyed that he bombed forward a lot but that's because he was instructed to do so by AVB (who weirdly thought it was a good idea to have dembele as the sitter and Parker the box to box).

but they have not proven to be better than the players they've replaced so 'the dza's point is valid.

its a fair assessment, we all know what we had, yes we've replaced it with potential improvements, but that's all many of them have shown thus far

And here's the point. We have highlighted players who we felt had big weaknesses and replaced them with players who are no improvement and often worse. It's absolutely bonkers.... Fazio is the latest to look like an exact replica of Dawson - astonishing we chose him to sign

i find it far more astonishing supporters want to draw conclusions on a player after only a handful of games

Rather than simply leave the money in the bank we have invested it in the hope of unearthing some gems and hopefully make a profit at some point.

Over the next year or two I can see us selling off those that Poch don't see as essential and use the money to finetune the core group of players (2 out, 1 in). The rest of the squad can be filled from the academy.

How many times - forget his red cards and shaky displays. He is unbelievably slow and suspect in behind - that will not change.

I hope this will be the strategy from now on. When you look at Bentaleb, Townsend, Mason and Kane, these players are plenty good enough to be squad players for us. No point in us spending so much money on 'filler' that we end up selling on after two seasons anyway.

Speaking to Brazilian media outlet Lancenet in Brazil yesterday, Paulinho admitted that he would consider leaving Tottenham for a move back to Brazil.

“Players always wants to play. I am participating in a few games at Tottenham. Maybe it’s the opportunity to go back.

“There is interest of Brazilian clubs, but nothing concrete yet. I’m glad to have a recognition, I feel proud.

“Tottenham invested very big money to transfer me there, but I can work or not, like any other player. I do not have to think about transferring, but any player is subject to transfer when the window opens.”

The Lancenet story, in Portuguese, can be read here.

If we allow him to return back to Brazil I can see us struggling to get half of what we paid, I'd rather we looked to Europe, surely there must still be someone left that wants him and is prepared to pay us a decent fee. [-o<
