average i guess...not the Daily Star, not the Times, in the middle somewhere

The Star and Express have the same owner and share a sports desk. The number of journalists that they have has been cut to the bone and they do not have the resources to dig out stories any more.

Barcelona prepare £25m bid for Chelsea's David Luiz

The Brazil international is the Spanish champions' primary centre-back target, while Jose Mourinho is unconvinced about the 26-year-old's defensive capabilities

Barcelona have stepped up their defender search by making a £25 million move for Chelsea’s David Luiz, Goal understands.

The Catalan giants are preparing a bid for the Brazilian after making him their primary centre-back target.

It is believed that Barca have enquired about Luiz’s availability and have been given encouragement that Chelsea could be willing to sell the 26-year-old.

The Spanish champions, who have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign the Brazil international in the past, are putting together a lucrative package to entice the Brazilian to Camp Nou and informal discussions have already started with his representatives.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is unconvinced about Luiz’s defensive abilities and is ready to cash in on the defender and sign a new centre-half, with Doria, an 18-year-old Brazilian who plays for Botafogo, among those on his target list.

Barca want to reinforce their back four by signing a left-sided centre-back to provide competition to Carles Puyol, 35, after releasing Eric Abidal.

The Spanish club targeted Thiago Silva and Arsenal pair Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen earlier in the summer, and also offered £17.5m to Roma for Marquinhos before being trumped to his signature by Paris Saint-Germain.

Barca have now turned their attention to landing Luiz, who has developed into a fans’ favourite at Stamford Bridge since moving from Benfica in January 2011.

The player was a regular first choice under Rafael Benitez last season and was frequently picked ahead of club captain John Terry.

However, new boss Mourinho has misgivings about Luiz’s defensive aptitude and wants to use the money from selling him to buy a replacement.

Had no idea about this and a good signing for Trabzonspor - signed Malouda from Chelsea. Now closing in on Bosingwa it seems.

Liverpool have told Arsenal they won't sell to direct rivals. This means West Brom and Fulham are out of the race for his signature.

Christian Benteke: "Only Spurs were interested in buying me, I'm an Arsenal fan so I could never go to the rivals."

Luiz is going to fit in Barca much better than with chelsea.

Cesc Fàbregas has told friends in English football that he wants to quit Barcelona for Arsenal

I thought it was said on here the other day that this guy just makes stuff up

I automatically assume that everyone is making stuff up, especially the papers but this is how he describes himself:

A Freelance football journalist with previous ties to the 'Financial Times' and 'The Telegraph', possessing a certain privy to Arsenal.

FULHAM are facing a possible transfer embargo after signing Ange-Freddy Plumain from Lens on a free transfer.

The French club are furious, claiming teenager Plumain was still their player and had not been given permission to talk with other clubs.

Lens are also angry midfielder Plumain, 18, had been absent from the club since July 8 and therefore in violation of his contract.

The situation is similar to the one Chelsea had with Lens in 2007 over Gael Kakuta, which resulted in them being given a two-year transfer embargo and a four-month ban for the player.

It is unlikely Lens would complain to FIFA again unless they had a watertight case.

The French Ligue 2 side released a statement yesterday claiming Plumain was still under contract and Martin Jol’s side had therefore broken FIFA rules.

It said: “Racing Club de Lens is surprised to hear the information to the extent that the player is still under contract and had no authorisation on a possible engagement.”

Plumain, who has represented France at Under-16s level, played 22 times for Lens last season and scored 18 goals.

“The French Ligue 2 side released a statement yesterday claiming Plumain was still under contract and Martin Jol’s side had therefore broken FIFA rules”

Fulham are in Germany where they play Werder Bremen today.

A spokesman said he was unable to comment.

Kakuta, then with Lens in Ligue 1, signed with Chelsea against his former club’s wishes, who then complained to FIFA.

The world governing body imposed a two-year transfer embargo on Chelsea with Kakuta also suspended as FIFA declared both player and club were “jointly and severely liable.”

The Stamford Bridge club appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who ruled Kakuta’s Lens contract was not valid and so could not be breached and lifted the embargo.

Chelsea came to an agreement with the French side, paying Lens about £100,000 for the player.

Imagine how Gooners will feel if we pull of the signing of Soldado under their noses; on top of Higuain playing his debut for Napoli in the Emirates Cup a lot of them could be about to explode!

Arsenal make an improved offer of £40m & Gervinho for Luis Suarez.

Liverpool have immediately rejected it, as they'd rather the £40m & £1.

Imagine how Gooners will feel if we pull of the signing of Soldado under their noses; on top of Higuain playing his debut for Napoli in the Emirates Cup a lot of them could be about to explode!

Then they open their morning paper on the day after the Napoli game and find two headlines: "Suarez Signs for Madrid!" and "Bale puts pen to paper on Spurs extension". :D

Ah, dreams.

Arsenal are set to miss out on Atletico Mineiro star Bernard, with the Brazil international's agent confirming he is set to join either Porto or Shakhtar Donetsk.

French newspaper L'Equipe had earlier claimed the 20-year-old was set for a medical in London, but Arsene Wenger told the Daily Mirror that was not the case.

Bernard's father has told O Jogo that the Gunners do hold an interest but expressed a preference for a move to Porto, with fellow Brazil international Hulk recommending his former club.

"Nothing is decided yet, but we know there is an interest from Arsenal," he said. "There has been nothing official from them. Hulk has convinced Bernard that Porto move would be better for him at this stage of his career. Porto would be a better move for his career."

The player's agent, Adriano Spadotto, has also indicated that a move to Portugal is the most likely outcome, despite rival interest from Ukrainian side Shakhtar.

Asked about Porto, Spadotto told Mais Futebol: "I can confirm that is the strongest possibility, but Shakhtar are interested too. He should join one of the two clubs.
