BIG CHIV IN BASEL:
Martin Chivers is back on familiar territory in Basel - and our all-time leading goalscorer in Europe is convinced we can book a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League tonight.
'Big Chiv' scored 22 goals for us in 32 appearances in Europe and famously scored twice in the first leg - the second one of the best goals in the club's history - as we beat Wolves over two legs to win the UEFA Cup in 1972.
Now he's hoping to witness similar success from the current squad as we take on FC Basel in the quarter-final, second leg, having drawn 2-2 at the Lane last week.
"It's a tough game because we saw what Basel are capable of last week," said Martin, who has traveled out to Switzerland as part of the official party.
"They looked fast up front and created a few chances but credit to the players, they fought back, got a result and now we’ve got a chance.
"We know we’ve got to win - I can’t imagine it will be a 3-3 draw and we’ll win on away goals – and it’s a challenge but let’s nick a goal, we’ve done it before.
"This is a happy group, which I love to see, and anything is possible when you start level in a one-off game."
Martin scored 174 goals in 367 appearances for us between 1968-76 and proudly sits third in the club's all-time list behind Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Smith.
His career took a completely new turn on departing Spurs as he joined Swiss team Servette, where he fought a title duel with FC Basel in the 1976-77 season.
"We were leading the championship all the way only to finish up level on points right at the end in June," he recalled.
"We had to have a play-off and they nicked it 2-1. In fact, we finished runners-up in both my seasons here but made up for it with the League Cup and the Swiss Cup.
"My last game for Servette was winning the Swiss Cup against Grasshoppers and Christian Gross, a name from the past!"
Martin, a regular at the Lane as a popular Matchday Host, is thoroughly enjoying the trip.
"I love the occasion, coming away with Tottenham and still being associated with Tottenham," he said. "It’s a great moment for me, I love it."
