*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United ***

And with return respect my friend, the notion that he is not a keeper fit for this system was posited by me -quite vociferously- on this forum. I further criticised the DoF structure for 'gambling' with not having a better suited back-up keeper; it's fair to say many did not agree with that as being a point of wiorthy club criticism.

Anyway ;-)

If you've been watching closely, in recent weeks we have actually adapted how we play back to him in terms of angles and amount of time. There has clearly been a subtle tweak to allow for his lack of actually foot-skill. In the first-half he dealt with everything, as he has been, because as we also have been, we did not use him as much as we would a Vic.

We were 3-0 up when he made that first mistake. Yes, it is poor play/decision-making, but remember the poor pass he made just before that to (I think) Biss which created a bit of negative momentum. He clearly had a brainfart. The second one? There is no need for the player to get close to being able top tackle him, but he was suffering a compounded mental collapse and over-dithered again. I think both are absolutely lock-stock hand-in-hand issues, the inner knowledge that his feet are not his best friends added to an inexplicable lack of concentration compounded by insecurity after the error.

I was of the opinion we should've tried to get Navas on an emergency loan, but there ya go, we didn't. I now think if we do not get a keeper in early January who can play Ange's system (and is able to get down to shots faster too) it will be a criminal act.

What's vital -IMO- right now, is that we continue to play as we play, that we continue to trust him as best we can (with those important modifications) and that he -as the senior pro- steps up, takes it on the chin and declares he's ready for Sunday! I would be beyond angry if Sunday saw us start hoofing it all the time; thankfully that won't happen.
Great post. Criminal act might be a bit strong. As Forster has been pretty bullet proof until he wasn’t last night. As you say it was in the back of your mind, his mind, Anges mind etc. and when he screwed up it fell apart. But it doesn’t detract from his overall great play. And even the best ball playing keepers make mistakes.

A young backup keeper would be a nice signing, is it a priority in Jan given how well our current backup has done?

Steff it was documented at the time we couldn't sign an emergency keeper, the situation didn't qualify for that allowance.

100% agree though that if Austin and whiteman are not better overall than a 36 year old Forster then we need some new young keepers.

I have to say in fairness though that Forster has been a net positive since he came in. I'm more concerned about the fact we are playing an 18 year old centre midfielder at centre half, prodigy or not that's a gamble for me more so than a goalkeeper with six international caps.

We have 21 year old Josh Keeley, who is highly rated coming through. Getting another young keeper in doesn't make sense if we think Keeley is that good especially as we already overstocked on backup keepers. If we're going for a keeper it needs to be an upgrade on Vicario.

We've been unlucky with injuries with 3 of our 4 CBs out. The cover there should sort itself out in the summer with Phillips and Vuskovic returning from loan and Dorrington coming through. Getting another CB is only going to block the route through for those players.

I believe you're right mate, albeit I'm not sure we tried hard enough to get an exception?

I overall agree re: Forster. I said on the pod at the weekend that I personally have sworn to accept what he CAN do and HAS done rather than what he can't do. To that end, I've been overall very satisfied, especially given that we've only had to slightly tweak our way of playing back there.
Last night was an unfortunate culmination, but we got through it and won, he was part of the win in the end, and I back him to come back strongly against Liverpool.

We have done our diligence/lucked out even beyond that with Gray. I agree, not ideal, but boy, he's doing a really good job.

I'd have a loan centre half in for the rest of the season 100% though. That way we get cover and no future player is impeded.

How many would we need to lead by in the 1st leg to think we have a chance to go through at Anfield?

If we let the current 13th best team into a game under zero pressure, you've got to wonder how the system will fair against good opposition.

It is a future problem, don't get me wrong it's great to pick up two wins and the accompanying momentum, but the players are so very frail in their mentality, we need leaders who settle the younger players down to enable them to flourish, yet it's the experienced ones who are bricking the bed.

Not a surprise that a game came where Forster cost us a goal. Two in quick succession in a similar way perhaps is a bit surprising. But he was always going to cost us goals compared to Vicario when playing for this long.

Question for me is can he shake it off, bounce back and get to where he's been before those situations. That's what we need, not for him or us as a team to all of a sudden change how we play.

Indeed.
I said to my mates the best thing now would be if he had apologised in the dressing room, assured everyone he was fine and going to brush it off, and that everyone closed ranks in supporting him and moved on. Which in all honesty I believe will have happened. He's a popular character, and I also think the fact we toughed it out last night and got through makes the whole experience a fortifier. I might be the only person on this forum who thinks we can get a result on Sunday.

That is one of the benefits of an older more experienced backup GK. Should be better positioned to brush things like this off than a younger player lacking experience.

A lot of support from the staff for Forster heading off the pitch last night from what I could see on TV. Forster has bailed the rest of the team out in several games with some excellent saves. Yesterday the rest of the team bailed him out. Go again.

I think we can. I think it's very unlikely, but it's possible so of course we can.

I think Postercoglu believes we should win both games, what a terrible attitude for a manager.

2-0 in 2011. Think before that, it was ‘95 in the cup. Two years before that, Ossie’s team won 2-1 there and we also beat them 1-0 around 1984 or 1985 if I’m not wrong. Other than that, we haven’t won there since the Titanic sank.

It’s a ridiculous record for a club our size.
Out players tend to brick it there even when we are the better side on the day
Best get the pundits ready now to give Ange pelters for not doing what other spurs managers didn’t do either
