Slightly unfair on Mason Id say. Mason came through the youth team as an AM but got his break in the first 11 as a CM because of course it's rare for a youth starter to be given such an important role and that's where he kept on getting minutes but that wasn't really his position he just made the most of where he got minutes.

Yes, he was very good though I'm still not sure that him and PEH look right together in midfield. There were times when there was a huge gap between them and Ndombele

The counter to that is that Liverpool under Klopp have never played with a creative or barely even box to box CM and instead have got by with their attacking done by their FBs and 3 forwards. arguably yesterday our full back were able to be more attacking because of the two of them. I still think we'll look better with one of Skipp/PEH and someone more creative or a box-to-box CM with them

Question is if we have that more creative player that can also do the defensive work well enough. If Ndombele will keep his #10 spot Lo Celso is probably the only option? We'll see. We'll keep Skipp and PEH in there for a while I guess.

Some better play from the back with Romero and Emerson in. Still not enough. Could do with a collective step up in terms of buildup play, but probably difficult to get right.

Some positive signs with our buildup play against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, but difficult to see that as progress given how poor they looked once we settled into the game. Next games will be a very different test. Hopefully we'll see some traces of improved buildup play at least.

Still so young for that role. Great to see. Hope he adds more on the ball over the coming months, but so far a ton of positives.

When Reggie pushed forwards, which he does all game, Skipp had to cover that left back slot, so the other midfielder does need to be mindful of that.
A Newcash player said they were doing well for 15 mins but then Reggie managed to get out a few times and our first long ball flew to Reggie, he killed it stone dead, laid it inside and Ndombele blatted it in. Easy peasy.

I get your point, but it's partially due to them being made of glass. Palacios, Sandro, even Mason and Winks. And those that aren't, like Carrick and that tough little bastard Modric, move on to better things.

Forgot about Wanyama! I expected him to be brilliant for YEARS then he just...lost it.

Dembele definitely got burnt out though. But then, if you were manager, could you really justify not playing him? I remember discussing him with a Belgian lad while walking down a volcano in Eastern Java. He may have been under-rated over here, but definitely not in Belgium.

Lol. Therein lies a tale. Which volcano ?

Dembele was a brilliant player and there will never be another player like him. He wore himself out for us.

Absolutely. So brilliant that remembering him upsets me. Skipp's a different sort of player, but I really hope that he can have a similar career for us to the one that Mousa had.

The volcano was Mount Bromo. Although, thinking about it, the Dembele chat may have been on the hike down from a nearby viewpoint before we schlepped across the dust plain and up the volcano itself. Memories are hazy, given that we'd all got about 2 hours sleep before starting the hike at 2am to catch the dawn.

If you've got a Firestick or Echo Show, you might recognise this screensaver pic, which was taken from pretty much the same viewpoint we were at:

Bromo's the smoky one in the middle. It was more active on the day we were there, hot smoke swirling around you with an almighty roar. We happened to chance upon a local festival, where people were throwing live chickens into the crater to bring themselves good luck. Waste of a perfectly good chicken, if you ask me.

Sadly not! With the crater being about 500m across, it'd take a strong arm indeed to fling a chicken anywhere near the centre. Most seemed to land, shake themselves off, then head back up the crater...where presumably they got flung in again by the nearest villager.

The sad thing was that there were people clinging on to the inside walls of the crater with nets and tarps, trying to catch the chickens -- presumably either for food or to make a quick buck. Like this dude:

Apparently it's not uncommon for one or two to fall in and meet a hot death each year. Can't be a nice way to go. Looking down into the crater was spine-chilling:
