Powers

Combining the genres of superhero fantasy, crime noir and police procedural, Powers, whose order is said to be around 10 episodes, is set in a world full of people with superhuman abilities and where all of those powers are just another catalyst for mayhem and murder. The series follows Detective Christian Walker, who is in charge of protecting humans like us and investigating cases involving the GHod-like men and women, referred to as Powers, who glide through the sky on lightning bolts and fire and who clash above cities in epic battle, oblivious to the mortals below.

Season 1, Episode 1 - “Pilot”
Walker and Pilgrim investigate the death of Olympia, a renowned superhero who is found dead in a sleazy apartment with no clothing and no sign of injury. Information emerges about Olympia’s controversial sex life, which may have played a role in his death

i started to. the first season. thought it got a bit samey/formulaic after about 4-5 episodes so i didn't bother after that.
no idea if i should carry on or not, wasn't that long ago.

I'm in to the second series & think that it has definitely been worth sticking with. I can understand why you might view the show as formulaic. When I started watching, I'd half watch & half use laptop/phone. Now, I can watch the show and not use either phone, or laptop, so I know that it has my attention.

Bad news the Mrs has nearly divorced me.. good news I have two episodes left of series 3 of Walking Dead. 4 a night its been lol.

Why is it, as he is at war with the Gov'ner, and went home to visit his home town where he met the guy that saved him on his first day out of hospital that he didn't go back to the hospital from where he was when it all kicked off and go and get one of those tanks.. army jeeps etc and place them on the road where the Gov'ner resides and blow the fcuking place up. Or is that too easy. Imagine the defence they would have on that prison.

The Walking Dead was disturbing to say the least on Monday, even more than usual. I have quite a high threshold when it comes to violence on film and tv, but it's almost like TWD and Game of Thrones are competing to see who can come up with the most gruesome hour of television.

It was kind of shocking, if TWD can be shocking any more. Love how this season is playing out so far, i have no idea what they will do next week. (apart from kill Zombies)

LOL.. suddenly the Gov'ner gets a tank for season 4. Wonders whether the writers/producers got ripped for not thinking the same as me about the end of season 3 and Rick must of known half an armies arsenal laid dormant outside the hospital he was in. Man that Hershal moment kinda sucked.. really liked his character, kind of a calming character amongst the brick hitting the fan all the time.

Regarding this show - It kind of makes me understand how young people may have watched this show and taken it to real life.. especially Jihadi fighters fighting for ISIS and they not flinching at the brutality of it all. Series 1&2 was like fudge me.. entering series 4 I am like numbed to it all. Not saying I want to behead anyone lol, just that young people watching these type of shows I can understand why they might be numbed by it and able to cause the atrocities that British Born ISIS members are doing. Scarey really.

Wow, that's quite a jump.

As far as I know there's no reliable scientific consensus supporting the idea that TV, movie or video game violence leads to real life violence.

Previous generations throughout the history of mankind have been capable of atrocities just as bad as what we're currently seeing without the influence of media violence. We're not living in a particularly violent world at the moment.

TV and movies may inspire individuals but at such a low level. Instead of blaming TV, may as well ban alcohol. I'm convinced that alcohol sees a greater change in people & is a greater influence on people than TV programmes. Alcohol can see people completely switch, how many people do you know who are calm during the day but can flip when they've been drinking? I'm guessing that most people know, or have known, at least one person like this through their life time.

I'm not saying alcohol should be banned. Or saying that people can't be influenced to commit horrific crimes. Instead, I'm wondering why the big furore over TV programmes? Aren't TV shows/movies really just something to blame for the violent behaviour of individuals in a society where there will always be the potential for violent behaviour.

My main point is how quickly you can be numbed by the brutality of something so quickly when its shown over and over. I also wasn't talking about everyone, I was pointing out the normally westernised well educated person that has gone out to fight for ISIS. I have no doubt they have been numbed by endless watching of beheadings and other such propaganda videos. Have you watched Walking Dead!? If you have do you feel the same on series 5 that you felt in the first two series. Maybe its where I have watched it over a fast timescale that has numbed my feelings towards the barbaric scenes. I am now not affected by the shocking things that arise on the show, whereas at the start.. it was can I really watch this.

I was not saying that these people having watched this show then decide to go out and murder because of it.

Propaganda videos showing real life violence and brutality is very different to tv and movie violence imo.

I watched about 2-3 seasons of TWD, watched all of GoT. I do get numbed a bit by the brutality perhaps, but I'm well aware that it's not real. It's done nothing to numb me to real life violence, death or brutality. Watched a movie called Narco Cultura a couple of years ago, it showed what I think was some real gruesome real life stuff (although not the actions, just the resulting bodies etc). That gave me a completely different feeling to seeing violence that I know is made up.

Do you think other sources of numbness work in the same way? Emergency responders see some really horrible stuff in car accidents etc. Do you think that numbness can be transformed in a similar way to media violence?

BBC2 are showing daytime repeats of 80's Wogan episodes, been recording them while at work and watching them in the evening. Of course, Wogan is a buffoon of the highest order and an awful interviewer but its quite fascinating watching these interviews again. They are certainly classic snapshots of the 80's, the fashion, the hair, the music, the stars of the day. Realy enjoyed the Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart interviews.

I cant stand this bum licking unfunny cretin

How has he landed a job that high profile?! I find him unfunny, think he tries too hard to please & that his career should have been limited to Gavin & Stacey, and even there I think that that show was massively overrated, I never found it funny.

He's got a good reputation in America i.e New York/ LA,he won a Tony for a stage play 'one man,two guvnors' so he's 'in' with the right people over there to get on television,i find him ok to be honest,i don't think he takes himself to seriously. Some of things he's done on tv here are quite funny but end of a day he's a spammer so won't go overboard on him.........
