O/T Olympic Football 2012

Scara - usually you and me park our car in the same garage, but in this case, I respectfully disagree. Sprinters are pure athleticism. It's sport, nay achievement, whittled down to its simplest format. Pick a spot over there, see who can get there quickest.

And that Bolt does it so technically different to what was considered best practice with his long gangly limbs. The man is a freak and for pure sports lovers THE drawcard of the Games. But globally, doesn't compare to Beckham with the casual fan.

Do people really give a fudge about 'footballing reasons' at the Olympics? No, Beckham doesn't deserve to go on footballing merit, but nor do Giggs or Bellamy.

The fact people are using viewing figures to back up why Beckham should be included speaks volumes

Until 2016 when I think rugby (7s) and golf are in with cricket in 2020 I believe.

Its all about the money for the IOC not what should and shouldn't be

people need to stop deluding themselves - the modern Olympiad has always been this way, this is just the modern version.

and the original Olympiad was mostly about showing off sporting and phyisical prowess anyway - much like it is now, just the ball swinging is money and sport

Scara, sprinters are THE most incredible athletes on the planet. The amount of time and preparation it takes to be able to run that 'straight line' in obscene time is something the average man/woman couldn't even comprehend. Unlike other sports people, they have no 'off season'. They have to dedicate their lives to their event. I find it amazing that most sprinters can out-lift a lot of professional weight-lifters for example. And most of them have less body fat percentage than ballet dancers or gymnasts!

Anyway, we digress, this thread is meant to be about D-Beck being the greatest footballer of all time and better looking than Niko (yeah, I went there...)

Thought you were talking about me for a second there.....

And you're Beckham/Niko comment is disgraceful. I thought you were cool man [-(

Beckham is 36 and plays in the MLS. Whatever qualities he had are long gone. fudge him, he deserves nothing. The frankly hysterical response to this decision just reinforces why I'm glad he's over in the states and we don't have to read every fudging detail of his inconsequential life. The media are just tinkled because of the lack of photo Opps they'll now have.

For once, you and I agree on something :D

TV audience innit?

Ticket sales mean nothing, it's the level of sponsorship that can be associated with him for broadcasts all over the world. An olympics with Beckham in is an olympics with a sportsman of note internationally - don't think anyone else properly famous is in it this year.

Usain Bolt? Michael Phelps?

He has played for United,Real and Milan and has proven his worth as a footballer. Why would he play for a mediocre european team if he can make silly money in LA?

Because he already has silly amounts of money without playing in that league which is probably the equivalent of our league 2. And guess what, he still doesn't particularly stand out, how many titles has he won? 1 is it?

The reaction to him not being picked is absurd!

Beckham "won us the Olympics!" Do me a favour. Yes I'll admit he played a part in our bid and deserves some credit for it, but he did not win us the games single handedly. Two factors are huge in why we won the right to host the games. The fact that we haven't hosted the event since 1948 and our status as a great sporting nation were probably the two biggest reasons why we got it. It weren't cos Beckham turned up at a few events, smiled and melted people's hearts.

He has lived off "that goal" against Greece for over a decade. One of the most overrated players of his generation and GHod knows why people put him up there with the likes of Charlton and Bobby Moore as an England legend when he's part of various England teams whose greatest achievement is reaching a quarter final.
