O/T Olympic Football 2012

Ticket sales means everything to the ODA..., that's how they make their money (and the UK doesn't end up in debt lasting years)... TV money goes to the Olympic movement and to a certain extent is irrelevant

Hardly irrelevant. You don't think your Government cares now that the Olympics have lost one of their superstars and worldwide viewing will drop, meaning a reduce opportunity to showcase to the World? Hosting the Olympics isnt just about putting on a show it's about making a statement and now Beckham's not playing, a good portion of yanks, Chinese, Indonesians and others will switch off.

Surely you're contradicting yourself there.

Not really, Giggs played top flight football for Manchester Utd last year.

I'm saying that if we want to take an old player for the young ones and there is sentiment involved, taking Giggs is a good move as he's never played in an international tournament in his very long and glittering career, (far more glittering and deerving than Beckham)

Usain Bolt isn't famous?

Ok then

Phelps?
Hoy?
The US Basketball squad

You are taking a very parochial view. There are athletes across all sports hugely famous in their home countries and across the world but not in the UK, look at volleyball and handball....we don't give a fudge but these players are very well known in their home countries.

Bolt runs for a living - that's not a sport, it's a means of escape.

I quite honestly don't know who the next two are and couldn't tell you one member of the US basketball squad.

The operative words are 'was' and 'played'

Whilst we're at it maybe we can get Bobby Charlton to lace up his boots? After all, he's the most globally famous player these shores have produced still alive!!

I brought up Brand Beckham because that seems to be an argument as to why he shouldn't be part of the Olympic squad. And also, (and maybe in some ways, sadly) Beckham is far more famous than Charlton globally.

Do you not think Beckham could play a part for GB at the Olympics on the pitch? The standard can't be that different to MLS, some would argue the standard of MLS is actually getting a lot stronger than we give it credit for. Having said that, Keano is scoring out there :D

LOL......yeah right? Of course if Beckham was playing they'd be likely to watch THAT particular game.

But they'll be watching THEIR athletes in their millions.

You are really reaching here

Living in NZ, I can tell you that most people here could tell you who Bolt, Phelps and Hoy are, plus what they do in the sporting world. They would'nt have a fudging clue who Benoit Assou-Ekotto is though. Which is a damn shame...

Amongst those under 40.....amongst those over 40 Charlton is a global legend

To you.

Ask 100 people in the street to name an athlete from the games.

You know the answer.

The 100 metre mens final is the blue ribband event for the whole olympics

Which says it all really.

The big event of the whole entire thing is 10 seconds of people running in a straight line - wtf?

I suspect that most of the people who find it exciting were the sames ones who screamed louder the further the ball got kicked at USA '94.

Scara, sprinters are THE most incredible athletes on the planet. The amount of time and preparation it takes to be able to run that 'straight line' in obscene time is something the average man/woman couldn't even comprehend. Unlike other sports people, they have no 'off season'. They have to dedicate their lives to their event. I find it amazing that most sprinters can out-lift a lot of professional weight-lifters for example. And most of them have less body fat percentage than ballet dancers or gymnasts!

Anyway, we digress, this thread is meant to be about D-Beck being the greatest footballer of all time and better looking than Niko (yeah, I went there...)

I understand that it requires dedication, I simply can't understand that people would dedicate their lives to that. It's a 'sport' utterly devoid of any skill or beauty and for me, of any excitement whatsoever. It might get more interesting if we allowed them to take whatever drugs they choose - see how low they can really get that record.

As for your Niko comment, my banning finger's getting twitchy just thinking about it ;)

Firstly, the government don't pick the GB Football team... we are not Iraq! ;) thank heavens... Pearce does! Right, glib bit over....

I think the Olympics will still have a pretty HUGE global audience, with D-Beck or without. in the whole scheme of things whether he plays or not won't really impact Showcase London. The Olympics for many people is not about football.... the 100M final in Beijing had the same number of TV viewers as the World Cup Final. I am confident that London will make a very good and positive statement, with or without D-Beck. Just my opinion though :)

No this thread is about how the organizers couldn't care less that the most popular sports person on the planet who isn't Tiger Woods won't be competing.

If I'm honest, I should just ban myself for a few weeks after that blasphemous comment!

I know exactly what you're saying mate, no other sport can make me feel the way football does. I could watch a professional athlete run the 100 meters in 4 seconds, still won't impress me as much as Marlon Harewood attempting a step-over...

It's one of those base things for me.......who can run furthest, fastest, jump highest, longest etc....it's simplistic, but a basic human thing.
