O/T Olympic Football 2012

I read somewhere that without Football, the Olympics would practically run at a loss. It's the most important sport in the Olympic schedule by a fair distance.

So having said that, you can imagine many IOC officials and maybe in London 2012 officials are fuming over this. He would have been a drawcard similar to the USA Dream Team.

Can't believe Pearce wasn't getting influenced to appoint Beckham captain.

My respect for Pearce has gone up. Beckham is a show pony with nothing to offer. He hasn't done so for probably 8 years. The most overrated player in football history.

for a start all 3 are playing at a much higher level than Beckham currently is and have been for several years now. it will be a mixture of what positions Pearce thinks his u23 squad could do with strengthening and which are available.

it would have been the David Beckham show had he gone and personally i think it's great for the young players he is nowhere near the squad

Yeah, why would you want a Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League winner, highly-regarded international-class and consumate footballing professional anywhere near the squad influencing young players??

He was a passenger in all those victories. Beckham is about brand Beckham. Always has been. And always will be. This is a serious football competition, or should be taken as one, not another media freak show for him to promote himself.

Oh come on now!

Having said that, I understand why the general public has this perception of him. Working in the media industry and having met him on a couple of occasions, my opinion is that he is a very genuine, hard-working, charitable and personable man.

Moreso TV revenue than ticket sales. You can't fit a billion Chinese inside Wembley Stadium.

Are you sure about the last line? I don't think any of the players would agree with you.

Redknapp and all the players loved having him training with us the other year. (I know, I know, Redknapp's a twitchy, saggy faced **** and all our players are bottle job tossers, but still worth thinking about?)

I always thought Beckham came across as a very humble, hard working and nice person in the interviews...

I would have liked to see him on the stage one more time, especially considering his game isn't based on pace but rather on fine technique and ability.

You only need to look at the press and listen to radio or watch TV this morning to know this is a good decision.

Media freak show.

If he was worth a place he'd be playing in Europe still.

There is no place for sentiment and Giggs is a far better player IMO.

OK I get it, nice bloke balh blah blah.....you mean he's not a complete tool like most famous people are then? I think his 'normality' gets him too much credit personally. And he's about as interesting as watching paint dry.

Fair enough. I'm not trying to change your opinion of him. I'm only speaking of my own personal experience.
