that's one way to look at it i guess, ive always been under the impression that the pre building works of the stadium is what we have been self financing whereas the actual stadium build itself will be financed mostly with outside funding (sponsorship deals and the like) as per Levys recent letter to shareholders which was recently posted on the board somewhere it looks as though we are close to the end of this phase of the NDP - which hopefully means that we will be less restricted financially as the pre building works are coming to an end.

but GB is right....you have to look at the past 5 years to see the trend which coincides with the start of the planning for the new stadium. From 2001 to 2008 the club were never serious about building a new stadium so of course we had some big negative spend transfer windows. Only late in 2008 did they announce the NDP and ever since the summer of 2009 we have mostly had zero-ish net spend transfer windows

He is, but there is two things to consider

- We have been spending, it just happens to have been financed by deals we were not particularly eager to make, e.g. is anyone saying we should have spent more than a 100M last summer?
- The new TV money would not have been in the initial stadium planning 5 years ago, so that is in effect surplus

yes we have been spending and of course we never wanted to sell Bale, but i think Levy has probably told all his recent managers that any income raised from sales can then be totally re invested in new buys.......the new tv money may not have been in the planning 5 years ago, but the economic downturn was never envisaged back in 2008 either which has resulted in less companies willing to sponsor huge expensive projects like this, and bank lending has been more difficult to obtain. We still have no idea if we have a naming sponsor in place. The club has said that 100 mill has already been invested in the project so far and we havent even got the final go ahead to start work on the stadium itself! I do think that finances will continue to be tight until the ground is built and the new money then starts coming in

If Bale hadn't have been sold, we might have signed 1 or 2 new players. IMO even Soldado, Chadli and Paulinho (i.e. those before the Bale thing kicked-off) were signed knowing the Bale money would be coming within 12 months maximum.

So what do you do with a free £40m then? Risk it on two half-decent players in an overinflated market, or pay-off 1/10 of our mortgage (which is accruing big interest)? Remember our owners are investors, not fans. That £40 could pay off our debts a year or two early, or a be a deposit that will allow us to borrow at a cheaper rate.

Arsenal's stadium building significantly handicapped them financially for a good decade. Only in the last year have they finally cleared their loans and been able to invest competitive amounts on new players again. Things will improve for us after our matchday income double from 2017, but we'll be saddled with these debts for quite a while to come.

Arsenal are only handicapped in the sense they have to break even as a club - they could still afford to outspend us significantly each season of the stadium build process

They are handicapped by their lack of ambition, nothing else.

If they wanted to spend last 3 years, this year, next year, they could.

The problem and it's one we would face if we became CL regulars is,

- increase your wages 2X and buy one or two marque players puts you in the running (and secures revenue streams)
- to actually (really, not just there for a few months of the season) challenge for title/CL would mean probably 2X -4X spend again with no guarantee of success.

The Scum's board did the math a long time ago, the stadium is just a pacification excuse, they have no desire to dump profit for a "maybe" they are quite happy with the operating profit as a CL regular.

Interesting.

How do you think this dynamic will change if Wenger goes at the end of the year?
I suspect even if they finish 4th, they'd be f-ed (in terms of wanting to keep their operating profit)

I'm hoping the replacement is already sorted, or 99.9% done. I hope that if as it looks likely, that TS vacates his role, there will be minimal time in which we have no replacement named. But this is Tottenham, and I'm probably hoping for too much! What's everyone else's view on the timelines over the coming days/weeks...months!

Any time between now and when the World Cup finishes mid-July.

I'm like you and thinking that a replacement coach has already been signed up. I'm not ITK but a sensible guess would be that Levy was biding his time and has sprung into action having seen both Man UTD and Arsenal start considering the life expectancy of their managers.

Maybe we will hear something before then. Could help to keep the players happy

I doubt Wenger goes, the board are happy enough with him, he has done enough for himself to stay on. The only way I see Wenger signing off is actually if he wins the Cup and thinks it's a good high to leave on.

They charge a lot of money for their tickets, tv revenue keeps going up as does CL, as long as they stay in top 4, and bring through the occasional player to sell on, the board will be plenty happy.

Yep, logic would say Levy and LVG have had the basis for an agreement in place since AVB left, neither overcommitting but agreeing in principle.

LVG now has a named replacement in his role, think Levy has confirmed to himself he won't be giving TS the role.

Looks like two or three big clubs may have a position open, Levy is trying to lock it up now.

Is the spurs job too much of a poison chalice? From the Chairman who doesn't like to spend too much and loves a haggle, to the fickle fans who want the team to play 'the Tottenham' way even though that's not been successful for decades, to the players looking for the next big step up , the best of them regularly creamed off, who'd actually want the job.

A top top coach would need to be mental to want to take us on and only then if he wanted to start from scratch and build something long term if he's allowed. Newbies would love the job but as TS has proved not all newbies are s good as pep.

This is an era defining moment for us. Get the right coach in and we may be there or there -abouts make the wrong choice and face years of mid table obscurity.

I effing hope Levy gets it right this time

I think we have the finances and squad to still look attractive to a lot of coaches. Lets not forget that not too long ago we were looking cemented in as the third best team in the country (and then it went tits up). There is no reason why a good coach with a couple of key signings couldn't do a decent job over the next couple of seasons.

We're still a very attractive proposition to managers and coaches.

1) Well run, relatively financially strong club
2) Chairman who whatever you say about him, is professional, not unhinged or prone to random craziness and does not undermine his managers in the media
3) World-class training facilities and youth academy
4) Quality youth/development squad that had some eye-catching performances in the recent NextGen series and has produced several players with potential for the first team
5) Young, quality squad that just needs motivating and organised
6) Based in London

As fans we tend to look at the club in the most pessimistic light - but i think most impartial people outside would view us as a good opportunity for a manager.

We are going to (hopefully) make someone look like the messiah very soon; our potential is massive. Our history enormous.

Just look at the accolades Rogers has got for seemingly doing the same at Liverpool. Or how easy it was for Redknapp to pick up the pieces when (like now) on the surface we were in a bad situation.

It'll be a tough job, working with Levy and no money, but there's so much potential in our squad and setup that the right manager could easily strike gold.

I think LVG has a big enough ego that he genuinely thinks he could win the league/beat his protégé Mourinho with us. It's as impossible a proposition as winning the league with minimal resources at AZ.

I think that we are setting ourselves up for a fall if we set the bar that high. The gap between the resources available to the top clubs and the ones immediately below is so huge that we will do well to bridge that gap let alone finish above all of those teams.
