Mousa Dembele

Looks like Dembele has made Hazard his bitch for the Euros

I think we need to sign his clone, the other dembele from fulham, just to give commentators a headache

He seems to be very chummy with Nainggolan. Could be very good competition for Moussa and Eric and is clearly a level or 2 above Mason and Carrol.

The lad who is strongly rumoured to be going to Chelsea for £32m???

Good player and i agree but can't see us competing for the wages let alone the fee

Last season we lost just once (Opening day against Manchester United to an own goal by Kyle Walker) in 27 games when Mousa Dembele started. Without him, we lost five in nine matches which showed the lack of adequate squad players as much as emphasized the dramatic turnaround by Dembele himself. I guess that is why even though I think Wanyama is an excellent signing I am a little apprehensive about the fact that we do not have Dembele available for our first 4 league matches.

Yet on his official, verified, twitter account he is called Mousa.

Fortunately, spelling is not a pre-requisite to be a top, top footballer !

I once interviewed an England under 19 player who I was keen to employ to boost the company's team. My company's practice was to get all new potential employees to fill in an application form while waiting in reception before the interview. I noticed he had spelt his name differently from that printed on his typed CV. I questioned him on it and he said he made a mistake on the handwritten version but had hoped I wouldn't notice it! Needless to say, I didn't offer him the job!

First half against Inter I felt exactly the same. Our midfield looked average. Yes Inter made the game tight - for everyone including Lamela etc. but without Dembele we weren't able to suck players in, disrupt the opposition shape and create space for Eriksen, Lamela etc. Second half things opened up and Winks and Carol combined to move the ball around well.

Poch has a decision to make; who players with Dier? Most would guess Wanyama as we're away. But we never looked good containing teams last season, we always looked better when we are on the front foot. Not much separates Winks, Mason and Carol imo. Winks excites the most (as anything is still possible!). He's speed of thought and technique is there, but he will misplace passes. Never the less, he'd be the first player I'd turn to if we're 1 down and Wanyama and Dier are too defensive.

@NaijaSpurs I suppose the key is Wanyama. Can he have a similar effect to Dembele? Though 4 years younger, Wanyama shares some similarities with Dembele. If he can hit the ground running, Wanyama will be the answer. He might have to develop his attacking side, but he'll protect the defence and can carry the ball forward.

I'm not convinced that Wanyama can carry the ball forwards. I think he's better equipped to win possession, then make a pass. Perhaps I'm in for a Wanyama education this season.

I've seen him do the ball carry very well when he has had licence to do so

A lot of the time at Southampton he was sitting so didn't get that remit but when he did he was good at it

At Celtic he did it a lot more but he was head and shoulders above a lot of the players

Wanyama is not as good as Dembele at bouncing off players and dribbling in midfield. But who is? The point is, we win with Dembele in the team. Can Wanyama substitute with the same effect in Dembele's absence?

Given that we tend to score most games, what Dembele brings first and foremost is strength in midfield aiding Dier, Wanyama certainly can do that. Only concern is conceding fouls. He's combative but doesn't always know his own strength.

Dembele joined us when he was around 24/5, the age Wanyama is now. Lets hope Poch can do to Wanyama what he did to Dembele. Bring out the top notch player that's clearly there. I'm confident Wanyama can deputise, and as the season progresses even challenge Dembele and Dier.

If Poch plays Dier and Wanyama together we will miss some of the Moussa attacking ability, as seen in the video. But much of Dembele's less glamorous work is shoring up midfield, taking control in the centre with Dier. Wanyama can do that and start to attack a little too.

In the final analysis all we can do is wait and see but it speaks volumes that Wanyama was Poch's first signing at Southampton and that he has been I trying to sign him for the past year. I wanted us to sign Wanyama and I am sure he will be good for us, as to how good well that remains to be seen

We can't get this guy back fast enough really, Wanyama or no Wanyama (who I like too)
