Modric - No Longer A Spurs Player

After a couple of weeks finding out just why clubs rarely enjoy being in negotiations with Daniel Levy Real Madrid have now decided that the way to get him to budge is the time tested method of "personal plea"?

Riiiiight...

From Marca

Real Madrid has decided to cool off negotiations to sign Luka Modric. This is deemed the best strategy in order not to create more tension with Tottenham, a club which it considers a friend and which it does not want to cause any trouble with over the matter. Furthermore, it believes that the transaction will drag on - up until Daniel Levy accepts the €35 million which Madrid has set as its limit.

The Tottenham president, exhibiting the stern negotiating stance which he has earned a reputation for in other transactions, remains entrenched in his position that he will not budge from the €45 million he is asking for Modric. Not even the promise which he made the Croat last season to give him an easy exit from the club is enough to soften his stance.

When asked about the Croat on Friday, Mourinho was measured in his responses, well aware that the issue cannot become heated, because it could work against him. "I don't talk about players from other clubs," replied the manager, in a clear indication that he wished to put an end to the matter.

Mourinho is counting on the Croatian international as his big reinforcement for this season, and is prepared to wait until the market closes, even if it comes to 31st August, the final day for making transfers in Spain

AAAAAAAARGH!! A date to fill every Spurs fan with 'transfer window' horror... St Dimitar's Day!

I would absolutely hate if this dragged on until the final day (actually I wouldn't mind as long as we didn't have to keep reading about it and we got a replacement in) but it's so fudging cool to see people effectively scared of Levy and not wanting to tinkle him off. Bloody cool!

Although he seems to have weakened his own negotiating stance by saying that Modric can go. Madrid seem to think that means Levy must accept a lower bid, because if he keeps him he is breaking a promise. But obviously Levy thinks it doesn't mean he can go for the lesser fee.

So much arrogance here, despite Tottenham having mediocre results in the last 20 years.

You people form your opinions as if the only good football ever was played in England...

It's because your treating qualifying for the CL like it's a level playing field. You simply can't bring up CL qualification as a stick to beat Spurs with and champion Kiev.

I m not beating Spurs with a stick,nor am I hyping Kiev.

I just dont like what an arrogant view people here have towards big clubs in smaller countries, just because they dont have such a tough league(due to financial reasons).People keep bashing Rangers, but they have played the Europa League final just a few seasons ago.It was a fantastic achievement for us to beat Chelsea in the Carling cup,an Europa League win would be amazing.

This. Whilst it is correct that a team consistently qualifying for CL doesn't necessarily make them bigger/better the arrogance from some towards teams that don't play in the PL or La Liga is embarrassing....

I hope Levy put a deadline on Modric moving. We should tell all the clubs who want him that either they sign him before the start of next season or he will stay at Spurs. We can't afford to let him leave without having enough time to sign his replacement.

The premierships where it's at. Stick your pub league football. England should have five in the CL and take it away from one of the Mickey mouse countries.

A better and fairer solution all round would have been to make Spurs and Chelsea play off over two legs for the final CL spot.

Actually, all countries should have one place but that'll never happen because the big clubs want to fix the competition so that they can hoover up all of the money.

And it works because the average Joe has been brainwashed into thinking he wants to see Real/Barca/Milan/Juve/Chelsea/United/Bayern play each other every season. It's no longer exotic and exciting, it's boring.
