Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Words are cheap. I don't know what Poch means by "a freer style with good organisation". A bit of an oxymoron if you ask me. Whatever, we have seen precious little of either under Poch yet. I really hope he starts to deliver on his stated "philosophy" soon as I am getting depressed with the fare served up so far.

That they are. I think there were a fair few games that were quite exciting last year that showed flair but do agree with you that we haven't seen enough of it as yet. I just haven't made up my mind that he wants to have a boring team.

I think he is adapting the system to get the most out the players he has. When we have players better suited to the way he wants to play the system will change.
If, and I don't think it's a big if Poch is still here at the close of the window next summer I can't see Chadli, Townsend or Lennon being here. And unless there is a major upswing in lamella he won't be either.

Lennon, Lamela, Townsend and Eriksen (when he plays on the left) are all hamstrung by the defensive duties they are asked to perform. Lennon was much much more productive at Everton, Lamela apparently was so good at Roma we paid 30million for him and Townsend looks a a different player for England. They are all good players stifled by the system we are shoehorning them into. I really hope Nige doesn't go the same way.

Please can you explain what defensive duties are hampering them? It would be even better if you could illustrate/support this with some heat or event maps.

I agree. Last season was largely one where he had to assess and get the best out of players signed for AVB. I think that he got more out of the attacking players than the two other managers to work with those players but we are clearly still a work in progress.

I use the evidence of my own eyes. These guys have been transformed from lively attacking threats to dullards afraid to express themselves, take men on, run into space etc etc by virtue of the defensive shackles imposed on them. When have any of these guys excited you like a Waddle, Bale (even before uber Bale), Ginola etc? I will give you one Raboner. What else?

Do you really think these guys have no defensive duties? Watch how often they are behind their full backs. See how much time they spend in our half and not in the opponents. How many assists/goals do they get because they aren't in a forward enough position, let alone (GHod forbid) actually in the opponents penalty area. We have virtually no threat down our right side as a result.

What defensive duties are these???

Our attacking oakyers are IMO the worse players defensively in their positions in the league

Ginola put in more of a defensive shift than the likes of chadli

The reason they don't get behind their full backs is because their bloody slow and pedestrian and Wait for the ball rather than anticipate the pass

It's why we're so predictable and it's nothing to do with their defensive work

There has been a lot of talk over the summer on 3 main areas.

Defense

A real DM

Pace in the attacking quartet

Defense has been addressed in the transfer market and on the pitch if you look at michael Caleys xG maps we have been good and I think the back four in itself has looked ok with it missing Rose who is key.

A DM has not been addressed, we sold most ofour midfielders and I assume Poch would rather buy the right player rather than buy for the sake of buying (Stambouli/Fazio)

Pace in the attacking quartet - N'jie is rapid, assuming Son signs he is rapid also. Townsend is still here and I hope he improves. Alli is no slouch and offers pace also.

So we can see areas being addressed by the coach and his comments yesterday were golden

"It's like when you are in love with some lady," Pochettino said. "There are a lot of women around the world, but you want only one.

"Sometimes it is impossible. It's about love. And in football it is the same."

He wants to sign the right players.

In his press conference yesterday here are some of his comments taken from - http://www.hamhigh.co.uk/sport/foot...ipped_on_tottenham_s_transfer_plans_1_4211210

While Pochettino admits the club could “maybe” sign a player before Saturday’s home game against Everton, he was in no mood to discuss specifics or individuals.

“I am focused on my team and trying to improve our game,” he said. “I need to spend my time thinking how I improve my team and to be focused on my players.

“There are a lot of rumours around us with different players, different names. I’m happy there are only five days of the transfer window left because we need to be focused only on football and my job is on the pitch. I don’t speak about other players at different clubs.

“It is obvious we need one striker more, maybe one player more and we are working hard. This you know and this is what we need to provide the squad with [to have] the right balance to compete for the whole season.I’m happy because it is close to the end of the window and we need something to happen.

“We have different targets. We have our targets but I cannot manage the rumours and the names that are in the media. I never speak about the rumours, this is one of my rules.”

Spurs are attempting to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s attacking midfielder Son, with the German club’s director Rudi Voller confirming there have been talks and adding: “I saw many medicals in this business where there was no deal afterwards.”

Again, Pochettino refused to be drawn, stating the interest in Son is “another rumour, another name” – which he repeated when asked about Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama.

“When there are a lot of names around us maybe one is true but I am focused on my job because for us it is important to start to win games,” he said.

“We have a very important game on Saturday and my job is to keep focused on my team, players and Everton. The rumours and names don’t help us to win games.”

Pochettino reports that Erik Lamela trained with the squad today despite speculation that he could move to Inter Milan in the coming days.

“Is he in talks? I don’t know,” said Pochettino. “Erik said nothing to me. Today he was in training, happy, and the player is the same way as before. Nothing happened today.”

Asked if he expects his fellow Argentine to stay at the club, the head coach said: “Today, yes, but in football you never know. We don’t sign today but maybe tomorrow.

“Maybe there are teams interested in Lamela or another player we have. Today Lamela said nothing to me and it is only a rumour we see in the media.”

Saturday’s opponents Everton also have speculation surrounding them as Chelsea eye the prodigious Toffees centre-back John Stones, who has handed in a transfer request.

But the 21-year-old played throughout Sunday’s defeat to Emirates Marketing Project and in last night’s Capital One Cup victory over Barnsley, and Pochettino said: “Yesterday we could see that he is a very professional and mature player. He played like nothing happened.

“I don’t know if it [the rumours] are true or not true but what is true is he wasn’t affected by the rumours and played like he played, in a very good way. It’s not a situation that can help us.”

Which games from before Poch was manager would you use as examples where Lamela, Chadli and Eriksen were lively attacking threats?

If they spend a lot of time behind the full back, rather than coming inside to make up extra attacking players when the overlap happens, this would be easy to demonstrate using heat or event maps.

I am aware that my perception of events and information can be coloured by confirmation bias. Whilst we have been having this discussion, I have looked at the data from a number of games (and linked to one) to look at which positions the wide players are taking up during the game and where they touch the ball. I have been unable to find any that support what you say.

The reason that I suggest you post links to data that you think supports your argument is that I do not trust your eyes any more than I trust mine. Quite often our eyes and our memory distort events to tell us what we want to hear.

Then riddle me this. Why is it that one all too often talk about Lennon and Lamelas "defensive contribution" rather than their offensive contribution. They are, after all, ATTACKING Midfielders.

in the modern game everyone needs to attack and defend, its a fluid unit

With us paying 22m for Son, it is clear Pochettino is unable to convince any top quality players to join Spurs. And when we do find a decent player, we are forced to pay too much to get them. Of all the players signed under Pochettino (Vorm, Davies, Dier, Yedlin, Fazio, Stambouli, Alli, Wimmer, Trippier, Alderweireld and Njie), Son is the biggest-name player we have managed to get. Of those, only Alli has had some positive impact for us. Pochettino better hope Son will lift him and the team or this will put a big question mark on Pochettino's position as Spurs manager.
