Mateus Ferdnandes

Just a bit dubious about why he chose us over United … apparently we are paying £85m plus £250k a week for a player that hasn’t really done much. Is he all that?

He is both very good and we massivley over paid. Dont think the wages are £250k and there are no add ons on top of the £85M.

Feel like we could do a Matteus Fernandes song to the same tune as the classic Jose Dominguez & Nicola Berto songs. One of my proudest moments as a Spurs fan was getting those sung at the fan park in Madrid. 20 years on 3,000 Spurs fans signing about Jose Dominguez 🤣

"Once,
Twice,
Three times no safety"

£17m was a lot for Modric at the time. Arsenal bulked at it. He's a similar player too (not such a high ceiling perhaps)

We’re paying more upfront than United were willing to is my guess. West Ham are up the creek without a paddle financially

I think the transfer fee potentially scared United off. Same i think will happen with Tonali. If overpaying in transfer fee means we get our first choice targets vs missing out at a lower fee with more interest then it might be seen as good value in the bigger picture. If they improve the team to a point whereby we're in the CL places then moving forwards we'll be in a position to go head to head on transfers vs rivals as we can (seemingly) offer the wages and then the level of competition too. Until then we need to find an edge

So we are basically getting two Tonalis?

No.

Fernandes is more of a deep lying playmaker. He will pick the ball up from the back 4. Control the tempo of the game. Play passes forward to our wingers and forwards. Think Rodri as the top tier in that role.

Tonali is a more dynamic all action midfielder. Wins the ball, dribbles forward, presses, will hit more aggressive long passes, great at set pieces. Think Declan Rice as the top tier in that role.

Oh I’m all for overspending to ;

A) beat our competitors to their desired player
B) get the player before the fax machine starts playing up
C knowing that we must pay over the odds in both wages and fee without CL or any European football.
D) read rival forums …. Especially redcafe over the past hour …

You seem to have watched Fernandes since he was at school …

I was going by the diagram as illustrated. But I’ll take your word for it.

Obviously only v u21 midfielders but it doesn't look like he's limited on the ball in terms of progression

This is genuinely the type of player we have been screaming out for since the Bissouma signing didn't really pay off. A midfielder that is strong defensively but elite at progressing the ball forward with passes rather than dribbling.

Pair him with Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Sarr, Gallagher and we have took a major step up from the last few seasons.

Pair him with potentially Tonali and we have one of the best midfields midfield partnerships in the league.

Sounds promising.

Must admit I havnt noticed him in our games against wham. Looks decent defensively and has some trickery going forwards too:

Tonali has to be less likely now. We’ll still be in for him, but if City are interested, they’ll pay well and give a shot at the title. We’re a unknown quantity and lack attacking talent.
