Kyle Walker

Walker is an excellent player who has had 3 excellent games in a row. He mugged off Enrique all through the game. Except a couple off times.

His mistakes (unlike Barcelona player's mistakes tonight) were punished.

This.
although it is perhapsfair to say that his form hasnt been at the excellent level of where it was last season, lets not forget we have one of the top 5 right backs in the league and one of the best in europe too. i cant think of many his age in the world who look as promising as him. with the right amount of luck he could become englands right back for many years. lets keep his criticisms in perspective and understand that young players are not always the most consistent.

top 5 right backs in the league? come off it, this season he has been one if, if not the worst right back in the league and I was a big big fan of his last season. It's laughable that he was voted our best EVER right back. Spurs fans really are the worst when it comes to building players up.

I think that is a massive exaggeration.

States everyone is over exaggerating how good is then, then proceeds to over exaggerate on how bad he is.

Can't think of a right back outside the top six teams that i'd rather have.

apart from g.johnson and zabaleta, i think its fair enough to argue that kyle walker is one of the top 3 from sagna, m.richards, rafael, ivanovic/azpilicueta. unless im missing someone out, i think these guys are the contenders.
1) sagna has been horrific this season, so much so that some arsenal fans want carl jenkinson given more games. 2) we cant assess richards so far this year as he has been injured a lot and is 2nd choice too. 3) rafael has only started to pick up any sort of form for the first time in his manutd career in the past few months imo (although i accept that some will disagree with this assessment of him). 4) ivanovic has been playing centreback a lot and has also made a number of mistakes that have unfortunately led to goals like both sagna and walker. and the jurys still out on azilicueta's career in england so far imo.
therefore i definitely do not think its unreasonable to argue that walker is a top 5, although i guess you could also argue that hes not. but even if you dont think hes top 5 at the moment, hes for sure not far off.

Could Walker do a Bale?????

I was wondering whether Kyle Walker could emulate Gareth Bale's progression from full back to right midfielder & beyond????

I have seen this mentioned in omt's about Walker moving upfield when little azza is unavailable and playing Naughton at rb. generally this has been shot down ....and im sure many of you will shoot this down but thats not going to stop me putting forward a few points in which I feel Kyle Walker could do a Bale....

1. As a player I feel Kyle Walker has more attacking instincts than defensive ones (defensivley he is prone to errors which has cost us) similar to when Bale was our left back.....didnt look like his natural game.

2.Walker is a good physical athlete - great pace & strength and is also quite skillfull (like bale) also his crossing ability is at a good level.

3.This would solve the problem of cover/competition for Lennon and we could play someone at rb who has better defensive positional sense (Walker's weakness) whether thats naughton im not sure...

4.A few years ago none of us would have said Bale would be a star(we all wrote him off) he was a spider's arse hair from being sold, lucky for us it didnt happen....my point is that in Walker I see Bale a few years ago and I believe that if he was granted a more attacking role then he would flourish without his principle defensive duties....that does not mean I would not expect him to track back or press.

Sorry for these ramblings I just feel and cant quite explain it that this would enhance his game I would love AVb to try this in pre-season.

We are so close to challenging in my opinion really challenging. If I had to be brutally honest then I would say that our right back and the lack of a striker ( a real scoring worry the pants of the opposition kind of striker) is our biggest weakness. that does not mean I think Walker is a lost cause but I feel we would get the best out of him from further up the pitch.

The lack of a bona fied striker has already been done to death - but i feel this could be a decent debate.

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

He's the best right back we've got, he's young and should improve with experience.

We're lucky to have him imo. if right back is our weakest position, bar striker, i'd say we're doing very well.

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

Sorry but :ross: :ross:

no need for that

Some valid points there. He will never be "a Bale" but I think he could be far more suited for a more attacking role. He is very prone to losing the ball in our final 3rd, and if it was not for Lennon, I think he would be playing RW.

Good footballer, but sometimes he can just make me crazy in his current position

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

Basically and please dont misunderstand this thread which is could Kyle Walker progress into a better player playing further up the pitch....would this improve spurs???????? not whether Walker is a better player than Gareth Bale.

Bale I use as the example as to where a player has flourished from being played in more offensive position's as he started at full back.

he is skillful can shoot (was there for the winner vs arsenal) and i feel his game is more suited to attacking than defending.

just to clarify this is not about saying he is better than bale!

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

No.

Playing him further forward would not strengthen Spurs. It would weaken us at the RM and RB positions.

The winner vs Arsenal wasn't a great shot, it was a huge fudge up on the part of the keeper.

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

Bale's crossing ,scoring ability and also the skill of striking the ball are pretty outstanding since the very beginning (even before joining us) , his ability and sense of getting into the box to look for a goal have also played a huge part to make him become what he is today, in these subjects (forgive my crap english i just can't figure out another word ATM) , Walker is good but he is no where near to that level and i just don't see he can make it TBH.

He's fast he's physically gifted but now days you can easily find a bulk of the same kind players . He could became a very good / top right back but i am not sure if he can do it in other position , plus , its always difficult to get a good defender than a good attacker (IMO) .

Re: Could Walker do a Bale?????

Nothing is impossible I suppose, this does seem very unlikely though. So unlikely that it doesn't seem worth trying out imo, doesn't seem like AVB thinks it's worth testing out either.

Walker needs to improve his passing, close control and technique to be good enough in that regard to play as a right back for us. Further forward those demands are even higher. Apart from pace and strength he isn't particularly similar to Bale imo.

He's a lot of things but skillful is not one them.. I love the fact he's a good attacking fb and he links up well with Lennon (for the most part) but there's been numerous times when he's ended up 1 on 1 with the left back and the only trick he has is to knock it past him then try and bustle his way round him before the ball inevitably goes off for a goal kick.. it does my head in*

*Maybe it's just a confidence thing and over time he will try and relax and try other things but I'm not so sure.

Don't get me wrong he has a host of attributes, I just dont think he has the ones to be a full-on right winger week in week out.
