Joao Palhinha

Can't get some of these posts TBH...
1. We desperately need a proper defensive midfielder
2. We desperately need signings to hit the ground running and therefore must have EPL experience
3. We desperately need a leader in the middle of the park
4. We have a crop of youngsters in central midfield who are only likely to be regular starters in a year or two and therefore need a short-term solution until they mature

This signing ticks all boxes... the guy was one of the best DMs in the league for two years running so can't comprehend people raising doubts on his abilities.... I guess it comes down to his struggles at Bayern.... as if we have anyone who can lace the boots of the likes of Kimmich, Pavlovic and Goretska, let alone match their abilities. As for him being no spring chicken... come on guys... he's just 30 years!! Hardly due for retirement. It's just a loan with an option to buy if he turns out to be outstanding and we can agree a favourable contract with the player...

For me this is a signing that equals that of Kudus.
I like him as a signing. Think he'll be good.

He doesn't tick all the boxes though. We're short on passing, deep playmaking and ball progression. He does little to fix that.

Assuming we play with two deeper midfielders he's like to be partnered by one of Sarr, Bergvall, Bentancur, Gray or Bissouma (depending on who sticks around).

None of them are great ball progressors from deep and under pressure. The hope (imo) being that either Bergvall or Gray step up as they seem to have the most talent in that regard. If not it again leaves us lacking balance in midfield.

Provided he stays fit. Only played 5 full 90 min games last season. Maybe that was partly not being selected rather than injuries.
Possibly both. You get a bad injury and by time your fit again someone else is playing well in your position and until such time as they require a rest or form dips to the point they deserve to be dropped, you're not in the team. Not getting a regular start for a team like Bayern Munich isnt something that overly concerns me. VDV was similar at Real Madrid and was great for us. Paulinha was great at Fulham

Yeh I think the whole "failure at" narrative is wrong, he started when he signed, started well and then picked up a fairly bad injury, big clubs move quickly and people came in and covered the role, so harder to come back from injury and win the place back. Had he not been injured I suspect he would still be in the side even up to now. He is a good player, he plays hard yes, but he is not just an old clogger like some make out

The other positive is that often players who've not played a lot can come back fresh and hungry. And sometimes clubs sign players off the back of great seasons where they've given everything. And then next season they lack punch. Guess we will find out how Palhinha does! It is low risk for us only paying wages.

Yeah if as reported its a loan with option (but no obligation) to buy then its a low risk deal in an area of the squad that needs strengthening with experience while we figure out if Gray is the real deal in that position.

Looks like Joao was a "club signing" as Bayern were after him before Kompany arrived , now like Tel he is out of favour with Vincent.

Going to cost around £9 mill in wages with no obligation, has PL experience, looked pretty decent with Fulham and as long as he doesn't turn out like Werner should be a good addition to the squad.

From the Bayern website when he signed
Eberl also underlined Palhinha's outstanding sporting qualities: “João is a great player. He brings experience, presence, physicality, heading power and is simply put a good footballer.”

I'm with you, it's a brilliant signing

Its something I think we should do more of - explore the benches of elite clubs. Look at Chelsea getting Palmer off City. Sancho was one that got away too (United ruined his confidence)
