Japhet Tanganga

Sure you want your CBs to be good on the ball but the onus is still going to be with your CMs to really distribute the ball. The wider CBs quality on the ball is really a bonus more than a critical feature.
In a 3, at least 2 or the 3 (and probably all 3) CBs need to be excellent ball distributors. Davies is playing as he is the closest thing to a ball playing CB that we have. The two wider CBs being good passers of the ball is absolutely a critical feature, as with 3CBs and opposition typically having only one forward. it is very easy for teams to pick up our other players when out of possession. Having better passers in midfield will help of course, but If our two wide CBs aren’t good on the ball then Conte’s system won’t work.

I won’t be surprised to see Conte look to get us 2 new CBs as well as 2 new CMs as we are such as easy team to press into submission at the moment.

I think you're right.

All 4 CMs are going to have to prove themselves. Skipp will obviously stay.

And the 6 CHs have either got to get over previous poor form or have a run to prove themselves.
Romero and Japhet are keepers, Dier has shown good form and leads. Rodon too few games. Davies will stay until Sess proves his fitness and/or a new LCB comes in. Sanchez is the one most vulnerable, not that good on the ball, form has been patchy, and probably worth more money than the others bar Romero. He could go in January if things fall into place.

That might have come across as me knocking him - it wasn't. As others have mentioned I think in a 3 he doesnt look particularly comfortable carrying the ball up the pitch and picking a pass in that channel.

Anyone heard anything about why he was taken off? Assumed at the time Conte wanted something a bit different, but hard for me to see him doing much wrong.

Can't see him starting too many after that game.
He still can't pass the ball forward. He can't spot a pass. Yes thats vital in a 343.
He still isn't good enough in the air to be a centre half.

I didn't think I'd ever be relieved to see Davidson Sanchez come on.

Isn’t that what a CB is supposed to do? I wouldn’t want them playing risky passes and trying to dribble round players from the back.
...visions of our CBs dropping their shoulders and doing stepovers...

...quickly followed by them tripping over the ball and landing on their arses...

In a 3 it is more often the one in the middle who is normally given licence to take the ball out from the back. Besides, if our midfielders were better passes it would be less of a problem anyway.

And do you really think Sanchez is a great passer? He looks clumsy when he has the ball at his feet which is while Jose identified him as the weak link against Manure in the Europa Cup final

His debute was in a three against victims and he was our best player that day

He was good that day, but i thought he played right back? We sat deep in a low block, and he defended well. Perfect for his skillset IMO

I don't think Sanchez is a great passer, another poster mentioned him. Re Japhet, i was at the game and I don't think he looked comfortable with the ball at his feet having to play forward. Similar to the Watford game when he started at RB, his instinct was always to come back inside and play safe/backwards. I have no issue with his defending at all

Not in a modern back 3. They are the spare players, everyone else is marked so those wider centre backs need to be able to pick a pass or maraud forwards... did you notice Dier marauding forwards against Leeds, there was a good video of it posted earlier on the interweb.

This makes no sense, Davies at LCB is not linked to Sess.
I guess you are saying "if we play a back 4 then Davies is one backup to Regi and Sess is the other"???
If Sess can't play because his body is broken (like it has been 90% of the time) all we have is Davies if we have a problem with Reggie on the left side. WB or FB.

Unless we play Doherty' :)
