Jamie Donley

So youngsters X1

Kinsky
?? Vuskovic Phillips ??
Gray
Bergvall Donley
Tel Lankshear Moore
Still have Scarlet, Dorrington, Sarr, Devine, Keeley, Yang and Abbott as well as more promising youngsters I have missed or coming through.

I don't have a clue, obviously, but for everything I have read and heard about Phillips, doesn't sound like he is going to cut it for us. But who knows!

What doubts have you picked up on Phillips?

I've actually not seen anything that isn't natural for a lad his age. I'm hoping he's more suited to the PL than the current league he's playing in. Stoke aren't exactly known for their Brazilian football either. He's averaging 6.8 over 20 or more games this season. I'd say that's actually quite solid. He's at a team that is struggling in 18th in the Championship.

I'm not entirely sure, The Extra Inch perhaps? Heard him described as essentially the same type as Dragusin, great box defender, but not particularly quick and not a great passer of the ball.

Stoke are struggling, but they are struggling to score goals. That's what's costing them.

They are still trusting Phillips to start league games for them, and have the best defensive record of the teams around them.

I was looking at this as part of our chat - https://www.whoscored.com/players/430775/show/ashley-phillips

Strengths - blocking the ball (strong)
Weaknesses - concentration (very weak) and tackling (weak)

Style of play
Likes to play short passes
Clears the ball out of defence often
Does not dive into tackles

It sort of resembles that player I watched for our U21s. There is definitely a young Rio about him in the way he plays.

This one was written before - https://footballtalentscout.net/hom...e-future-of-english-football-by-archie-berry/

It is a little more complimentary. Talks about his pace as well.

I don't see him as anything like Dragusin actually.

Be interesting to hear others thoughts. Perhaps others have watched him live.

Nice! I hope you're right. I never watch our young guys so just go for whatever I hear here and there. 😊

You forgot Odobert and that kid who scored the 2nd goal against elfsborg in the EL. So many talented players at the club now!

Because I only ever see the MOTD moments, I have no clue how Donley's all round game is actually. I see he plays in the centre of a 3 in a 4-2-3-1. That would normally mean a decent chunk of work both defensively and offensively.

Can anyone see any chinks in his armoury in the other parts of his game?

Bit one paced when I've seen him at youth level.

Not seen much of him but did see the Wrexham game.

He wasn't very involved in build up and, playing in the hole, was often bypassed by direct balls from deep designed to expose the slow Wrexham defence.

It's difficult to say how reflective of his general performances that is - this game was away to one of the divisions top teams.

He did seem to struggle to impose himself in general play and lost the ball a few times with some adventurous/positive passing, but then popped up with the goal and a couple of other good shots. Reminded me a little of Dele in how peripheral yet effective he was (albeit in a different role). Big shades of Dele at Palace with the goal too.

Want to see how he fares against weaker opposition. Will post here if there's anything to add!
